Ahh right but that is designed to work without a keyboard yes ? You flip it over and use screen only. Thats a different class of device to a traditional laptop.
It is, but you don't need to use it in tablet mode only to use the touch screen and you have the XPS line of laptops that are true laptops but have touch screens.

My point is that its a useful feature and while many people don't see the need (which I totally respect) other folks find it useful.

I honestly can't understand how they can stand there at keynotes going "look at how sleek and slender this wonderful machine is" knowing full well most users have hundreds (in some cases thousands) of dollars/pounds worth of peripherals plugged into these machines. Always absent from these keynotes are any images of the 15 dongles (exaggeration to prove the point) you'd need to hang off their newest machines to retain the functionality of your old machine.

It's sad really that even the average power user of Macs is being left wondering how much stuff they couldn't get done with modern Macs without jumping through hoops.

I'll probably never buy another Mac laptop unless the base spec is increased to a reasonably competitive level without having to fork out an additional £300 at least on top of their already high prices on RAM, storage, and maybe CPU upgrades at time of purchase. A computer isn't just an expensive toy for me, that I expect to replace every 2 years. I expect to get a few years good use out of such an expensive purchase.

Interesting... Most people that I know who own laptops or use them for work run around with them. Those that need a lot of peripherals usually have desktops. I know there are exceptions and a lot of them, but the basic goal of a laptop is for it to be portable. I´m absolutely certain Apple is aiming for an interface free laptop in 10 years that only communicates through wireless protocols.

The dongle makers must be rubbing their hands with glee. Takes me back to the tiny Sony laptop I had in 1998, with a port emulator hanging off one side and USB multi port dongle off the other. Just when the whole world has gone HDMI, Apple thinks it is a good idea to delete it. Hello Apple: NO IT ISN'T. If you have to go slim, what is wrong with a Mini-C HDMI port like professional cameras use?

I predict 14", 15" and 16" MacBook Pros. Eventually only the 11" MacBook Air is left and the 12" MacBook remains.

what is wrong with Apple? no wonder they removed the word Computer from the title. they don't care about computers any more. how long have they kept customers waiting??? total joke. This better be good.

I know what you mean, they touted the wireless nature of computing to promote the Macbook, yet people now need dongles to manage their devices and power the MacBook. If apple reduces the ports or removes some, then it only makes it look worse when I have more wires/dongles and adapters to do what I could have done with my old MBP without that mess. I don't call that progress

The same for me; I would like a new 15"MacBook Pro, not a "MacBook Air Pro"....

This makes me sad. I've been anticipating the new release eagerly, but it seems the rumors about the absolutely awful keyboard from the MB making it to the MBP are true. Though I'm not a "pro" user in any sense of the word, I was hoping the MBP would include a keyboard sufficient for more than Facebook updates and watching Netflix on the train.

Yesterday was fairly typical; I drafted a contract containing 26,000 characters. Couple that with answering a few dozen emails and revising documents from others, and I'd estimate about 100,000 keystrokes in an average work day. Put another way, in an average work year I'd have about 20 million reasons to hate that keyboard.

I don't like the all-USB-c stuff, and I'd miss the SD card reader, and I'm quite fond of magsafe, but I'd live with those compromises. In time their absence would bother me less and less. But that keyboard is an absolute deal breaker.

I'll wait 'til the MBPs are in stores next month just to give them a fair shake - I very much want one and hope Apple has heard the feedback about that joke they popped onto the MB which makes me feel like I'm typing on my iPad (to be fair Tim did tell me it would replace my computer...). But if it's as bad as the rumors seem to suggest, and the keyboard is identical or substantially similar to the MB, I'm ordering a ThinkPad X1 Carbon the next day.

I am currently on a MID 2012 Macbook Air of which i broke the wifi antenna unfortunately. Otherwise it is completely fine to me. Anyhow, i am awaiting the new macbook pro eagerly since i want to upgrade.

As a Student, as a part time System Admin, and as a Hobby DJ i am depending on many Ports like the HDMI, 3.5 Jack, and the USB-A's. Taking them away completely from the new macbook would make me buy a 2015 MBPr instead of the new one. I simply cannot carry around dongles all the time at university, for djing and in many more cases just to have a 20% faster machine.

The move to USB-C totally makes sense to me, but it should be done slowly while still keeping the legacy ports on board until the adaption of the whole market has taken place. Therefore, if they drop all other ports but the usb-c i will have to get the 2015MBPr.

How about Apple Dongles Inc? Very soon we'll need dongles for about everything Apple makes. The might as well patent white dongles and forbid any other company from making dongles in that color.

I keep posting this but now i'm even more sure Apple plans to disrupt the Microsoft event by taking over tech news with this release.

This is a good head to head but I think Apple will edge this one.

I hope they do not forget desktop Macs at this event and that we get something that will make up for the 2014 Mini (who I am kidding? I so wanted to finally move to that model Mac and cannot justify a 2012 or 2014. 2012 only in that it is a four year old model at this point). Also, new Mac Pro. It kind of pains me that even though I never joined the folks who used those machine as workstations, that Apple is so thoroughly neglecting the audience who not only made them what they were, but too, saved them.

I started on a Mac in hopes of becoming a graphic designer, but that sadly didn't work out. I would love to see these machines be as beautiful on the inside (specs and software again) as they are on the outside. No more beauty is only this machined color deep please.

Just out of curiosity, what's starting to fail on it? I have a mid=2012 and perhaps I should start worrying...

Strange how people are assuming that because of a Mac's age they're all going to succumb to some kind of kill switch and just die one after the other.

Still rocking my 2010 27" and it's not going anywhere for a while.

USB-C is a port-for-everything. It makes sense. Yes, most of us may need to buy an adapater for some stuff, but the entire industry is moving to USB-C. There will be a bit of pain with change, but that's always the way.

I truly hope they make it more repairable this time, too. Timely article on The Guardian on e-waste: https://www.theguardian.com/global-...ce-waste-old-technology-mountains-in-pictures

You would be making more of a contribution to the environment by buying a unrepairable Apple computer that uses more sustainable materials than other laptops, than to buy a repairable other brand with less sustainable materials.

Apple computers are known for their longevity and resale value. I bet you that the percentage of Apple computers on that technology mountain is less than the market share percentage that Apple has in computing.

I recently purchased a mid 2015 retina macbook pro 15", I won't regret doing that in case the next generation of macbook pros would only have USB C ports...

A new mini please!

Maybe all Apple laptops will simply be called "Macbook" with just different sizes to differentiate them?
