Yep, I'd much rather they dropped the SD card slot and put in a FW and FW800 port instead, as I use a firewire card reader for my CF cards, and a FW800 external drive. Guess I'll find a way around it though, and accept that I may be a minority case.
Dude FW800 has been gone for four years — just get a Thunderbolt -> FW800 adapter.

Who are these mythical people that need TONS OF ADAPTERS? If you have a ton of adapters, odds are EXTREMELY high that you're simply "doing it wrong."
YES ^^^^ this exactly.

This is exactly what I hope, however my understanding is that Kaby lake would be needed for thunderbolt 3?
no

Maybe its semantics but its my opinion that those ports will be USB-C/TB3, I'm not sure what the difference would if they're TB3/USB-C but either way, they'll handle both standards.
TB3 is a protocol. USB-C is a connector.

But that's just a response to your silly point. Why in the world is 1 port so much better? It really kills you to have USB3, USB-C, and DisplayPort in the same machine?
What? USB-C is the connector. USB3 (3.0, 3.1 gen1, 3.1 gen2) is the data protocol, which is completely unrelated to what type of connector is used, which alongside DisplayPort will be covered by these single ports.
Thunderbolt3 over USB-C will give you a single port for
- ALL flavors of USB
- DisplayPort
- HDMI
- Ethernet
- Firewire
- Power
etc
All at the same time AND you don't need to know what direction the goddamned connector is facing when you plug it in.

i've looked pretty much everywhere. There's no direct solution, so I assume I have to cobble something together. One thought would be to start with Apple's Thunderbolt to FW adapter, but how does that connect to Thunderbolt 3? There don't seem to be a lot of solid Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapters available-- I found one, but it seems sketchy. Am I missing something? The articles I've read say Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt 3 requires some kind of adapter.
Considering there are zero Macs available with a TB3 port, there are also zero TB3 adapters available. Just be patient.

More chance of the kids knocking something over. Isn't it easier just to put a card in a slot?
So many fans on here of removing stuff, they don't care because they don't use it and don't see why others might.
Wait — in either case you have your camera out, so what the hell are you talking about? In either case you plug in, unload your photos, unplug and are done. Why are you setting up a situations where your kids are knocking over your expensive equipment?
All these imaginary scenarios where people are walking around with pockets full of dongles, or losing dongles, or fearing they might not have a cable in some random situation... it's like those infomercials where people can't make spaghetti without spilling it everywhere or eat without knocking over their TV tray or basically function as a human being.
