I have the same problem:
- 2 TB disk firewire 800
- 1 DV Camera over firewire

I need firewire for my video editing stuff.

Any ideas?

I wouldn't be at all surprised if the ports are actually Thunderbolt 3 (https://thunderbolttechnology.net/blog/thunderbolt-3-usb-c-does-it-all) rather than just USB-C, in which case they will either bring out a thunderbolt 3 to firewire adapter or else could go thunderbolt 3 -> Thunderbolt -> Thunderbolt to Firewire (not exactly elegant but workable!)

Getting my $850 MacBook Air very soon. Probably once Best Buy opens. Not overly excited but finally being a Mac guy does. I told myself this will be the last chance I will give Apple since I despise iOS devices. Macs have a file manager and torrent apps while iPhones and iPads don't. Oh yeah, and some actually have an SD slot. All the hoopla for iPhones when Macs are the true superior products coming from Apple. Their roots are computers.

Apple Computer > Apple Inc

Just bought a Seagate Backup Plus Slim 2TB premium metal edition. Will look great next to my "older" MacBook Air with the standard USB. I studied the MacBook Airs for awhile too ever since the Haswell chips. I prefer 12+hr battery life. The "12 MacBook comparison also made me pick the Air instead. Only advantage that MacBook had was Retina Display and even with the weaker SoC, it still was inferior to battery life. I really don't care about sharpness on computers.

There are moments when "newer" isn't always "better." Not waiting another week just to find some port-less Macs like what Apple did to the iPhone 7 series by removing the headphone jack and have the iPhone SE be the final iPhone to offer it. And believe me, an iPad Pro with keyboard could never replace MacBooks. Losing ports will just bring newer Macs to that watered-down iPad level.

So going to pass on this Oct 27 event and shrug it off because I doubt Retina on the Air or e-ink display on keyboard would impress me that much and probably ruin battery even worse. Get iPhone SE if you want an iPhone with headphone jack. Get the current MacBooks if you want to maintain having standard USB, MagSafe, and SD slot. All these current new standards is protocol for planned obsolescence that every company does.
Yeah I decided that a few weeks ago. Saved $300 overall at Best Buy on a new rMBP 13.3 w/512 GB - upgraded from late 2011 MBP.

Yep, I'd much rather they dropped the SD card slot and put in a FW and FW800 port instead, as I use a firewire card reader for my CF cards, and a FW800 external drive. Guess I'll find a way around it though, and accept that I may be a minority case.

Dude FW800 has been gone for four years — just get a Thunderbolt -> FW800 adapter.

Who are these mythical people that need TONS OF ADAPTERS? If you have a ton of adapters, odds are EXTREMELY high that you're simply "doing it wrong."

YES ^^^^ this exactly.
[doublepost=1477106293][/doublepost]
This is exactly what I hope, however my understanding is that Kaby lake would be needed for thunderbolt 3?

no
[doublepost=1477106714][/doublepost]
Maybe its semantics but its my opinion that those ports will be USB-C/TB3, I'm not sure what the difference would if they're TB3/USB-C but either way, they'll handle both standards.

TB3 is a protocol. USB-C is a connector.
[doublepost=1477107297][/doublepost]
But that's just a response to your silly point. Why in the world is 1 port so much better? It really kills you to have USB3, USB-C, and DisplayPort in the same machine?

What? USB-C is the connector. USB3 (3.0, 3.1 gen1, 3.1 gen2) is the data protocol, which is completely unrelated to what type of connector is used, which alongside DisplayPort will be covered by these single ports.

Thunderbolt3 over USB-C will give you a single port for
- ALL flavors of USB
- DisplayPort
- HDMI
- Ethernet
- Firewire
- Power
etc

All at the same time AND you don't need to know what direction the goddamned connector is facing when you plug it in.
[doublepost=1477107434][/doublepost]
i've looked pretty much everywhere. There's no direct solution, so I assume I have to cobble something together. One thought would be to start with Apple's Thunderbolt to FW adapter, but how does that connect to Thunderbolt 3? There don't seem to be a lot of solid Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt adapters available-- I found one, but it seems sketchy. Am I missing something? The articles I've read say Thunderbolt to Thunderbolt 3 requires some kind of adapter.

Considering there are zero Macs available with a TB3 port, there are also zero TB3 adapters available. Just be patient.

More chance of the kids knocking something over. Isn't it easier just to put a card in a slot?
So many fans on here of removing stuff, they don't care because they don't use it and don't see why others might.

Wait — in either case you have your camera out, so what the hell are you talking about? In either case you plug in, unload your photos, unplug and are done. Why are you setting up a situations where your kids are knocking over your expensive equipment?

All these imaginary scenarios where people are walking around with pockets full of dongles, or losing dongles, or fearing they might not have a cable in some random situation... it's like those infomercials where people can't make spaghetti without spilling it everywhere or eat without knocking over their TV tray or basically function as a human being.

So any more rumours about the new macbooks?

<iframe width="560" height="315" src="

So far, we are looking at possible apple pencil support via the trackpad, touch-ID, oled magic bar, a whole bunch of USB-C ports, thinner profile.

Maybe they will also do something to the screen as well.

Anything we missed?

I'm certain to buy a new iMac to replace my existing aging one. However, I've been doing my TimeMachine backups over Firewire, and I am anticipating with dread how I am going to restore to a new USB-C only machine. I am okay with dongles, but after several hours of research I still cannot figure out exactly what I would need to hook a Firewire 800 drive to a USB-C/Thunderbolt 3 port.

Maybe I'll be lucky and with Apple will provide a solution, or the iMac will come with some legacy ports. But someone with a MacBook Pro must be facing a similar problem-- what's the solution?

FW allows DMA transfers and memory mapping (as does TB1) - but this is a huge security risk, not sure of this has been changed in TB3 (if that's what runs on USB-C on the new MBPs)?

Would probably require some ASICs in the adapter to convert protocol / map in real time and that's expensive to develop...

NB this is just from the top of my head - I've never looked in detail at the standards.

Apple Fan boy much?

Why would I wan't to add a cable and increase risk when it can simply and easily be avoided?

I have my laptop on a table and If I have my camera next to it, what am I to do, exclude children from the room? Its easier just to plug an sd card in to my laptop which I've done for years.

I don't really understand your condoning Apple getting increasingly able to piss off its customers. The list is getting longer and longer and hard to defend.

I used to be an Apple fan boy just like you, but I'm beginning to see the light. I can't be the only one and by the look of annoyance and anger in this thread, I feel sorry for Apple long term.

Oh PenInput / Handwriting works very well on my 14" Thinkpad X1 yoga OLED.
The OLED Screen is worth every penny for my eyes
Fingerprint - login is so comfortable, I love it.
Lte -- your are right it depends on the strength of the signal, but it is more comfortable then a phone hotspot.

If I wanted, I could work with my old Mac IIci and a Modem, but I want to pay for the Best possible and until 2014 Apple Laptops were the Best possible. They did not develop forward, that s not funny.

I just ordered the OLED Yoga. I'm pretty excited!

Well.. Then... Tell me how to develop embedded systems - I need at least a serial port and a MCU programmer to be able to do something... I've been thinking about building special Bluetooth to UART board which would mean I wouldn't need a direct wire connection to MacBook - but it's not as reliable and I still need to connect the MCU programmer...

And for iOS apps, I need to have iDevice connected via USB as well. That means at least 3 required ports during typical work...

If you're unable to use a 1' long USB cord between your laptop and camera without creating a tripwire for your kids, I think you've got bigger problems on your hands.

Alternately you can just get a card reader like I have which has a 3" cord — I challenge your kids to find a way to trip over that.

I feel sorry for you and everyone else whining about new Macs sight unseen. We don't even know for sure they removed the SD card but you and everyone else are SO ANGRY about it and you just gotta tell the world how much Apple pisses you off!

Everyone else will adapt (literally) and continue to be productive with their Macs and enjoy their lives instead of finding more things to be angry at.

Don't feel sorry for me, why would I want to use a usb cable when I can just plug an SD card into my lap top?
For the record, I don't have a 1ft usb cable.

I'm not annoyed at any one thing that Apple has done, its an accumulated effect and you know it.
Strawman, I don't think so.

Fingers crossed for the new MacBook Pro launch. But if Apple Inc. is going to minus the USB port, HDMI cable port and SD card slot then how could I get my stuff out from these devices (USB, SD Card etc.)? :( If the new Macbook Pro offers more than my old Del device, I would never mind spending a few more bucks and get a better device for me :p

The strawman is asserting that I am "condoning Apple getting increasingly able to piss off its customers" which despite the linguistic gymnastics in that sentence is a false assertion. I am doing no such thing, nor am I annoyed by them.

The SD card is a major issue for me, but they'll have USB ports, they may only be USB-C.

I don't know what's the idea behind removing the SD card plugin. However, if I happens to buy the new MacBook Pro, I would have to think a hundred times before I could get used to not using and storing my stuff in a SD card.

Agreed, its a thinner port then anything else, so the size of the enclosure isn't the reason, so maybe they wanted the room internally, or maybe they just wanted to remove it.

Your not annoyed with Apple, I am.
I used to drink that Apple cool aid and defend Apple just like you, thats why I reckon its not a straw man...

I don't think you understand what a strawman is. Let's try another — are you familiar with circular reasoning?
I know what a straw man is, I was just pointing out that you like to defend apples position, hence the condoning. Nothing to do with a stawman argument.

TOLD YOU!

Edit. Saw your thread. Hahaha.

Anyway, mostly just glad we saw an update!

Cheers.

Yep, in the most strait forward ******* way, you sure did. I tend to be a strait forward ******* too, so we're good.

ME TOO. I can't wait to go play with the tool bar. It's seems too cool to be practical for professional use. I have to go make sure it's not a gimmick.

I was amazed at how accurate all of the prediction work was. I felt like I saw a reiteration of online rumors. This is THEE most accurate out come after predictions I think I've ever seen. It's almost like Apple allowed things to get out, to hype it up. Video game studios have been known to create negative press about their own games, just to get hype.
