I'm I the only one who is ZERO excited over 5G? I'm a Software Engineer but this sounds just like a lot of work, with zero excitement factor. Does anyone have a link/website to spark my interest in 5G?

You will need to understand the business factor of MNO to truly appreciate 5G. Even if 5G is a much much improved 4G is still an improvement worth pursuing.

Another Interesting thing is the thread is unusually high quality for MR.

Yup... also lots of mobile expertise from Siemens mobile days (I left the US for Munich in '04 for Siemens Mobile)... lot of talent in Munich... but *very* expensive (and was a bit to buttoned-up and stuffy for my tastes, but if you have a family or love predictability and order it's heaven).
If you visit the English garden in the summer, you will find it's not buttoned-up at all :)

I speak German but have never been to Germany. When I take my family for vacation after the pandemic, what are the best towns to visit?
For adults: Fly to Berlin, train from Berlin to Dresden to Leipzig back to Berlin. A few days at each place.
Or Munich, Neuschwanstein, Chiemsee, Salzburg. If you are interested in old technology, the Deutsche Museum in Munich is a 20 kilometre walk just to walk past all the exhibits.

A major mistake by Apple choosing the EU. The EU are no friends of Apple, and quite frankly Apple should be wary of spending even a dollar under the auspices of the EU who simply cannot be trusted.

Apple will find to their cost that bureaucracy and despots will make it untenable.

Apple has been in Munich since... thinking hard... at least 1983 because that's when I saw my first Mac in their offices their. And I mean 1983, not 1984.

Didn't they also plan to spend a billion or more in the US to build more factories for their hardware or something? Or was that just to placate the man-child?

For real though, has anything come from that? Genuinely curious. I suppose the pandemic could've put a damper on such things.

I bet this would have been in the UK had they not brexited. I mean it is the home of ARM after all and Apple is an English speaking company from America so there would be a lot of synergy there.
I doubt it, Apple has focused its European operations in Ireland where they get a nice low tax rate. ARM is not a British company anymore. It’s owned by the Japanese soon to be sold to the Americans.

Owned by Softbank but situated entirely in Cambridge within the UK. Also Apples GPU development is done in the UK.

The typical meme is 5G “will be indispensable at some point in the future”. How far in the future? Could be years.

5G is pretty indispensable for me already. I use it as my primary internet (with the added benefit of being able to take it with me if I were travelling or working away from home). I suppose I could still get work done if I had to go back to 4G speeds, but I sure wouldn't want to!

Nuremberg. Vienna (technically not Germany, but still). Berlin. Munich in summer. Salzburg...

Hamburg seems vastly overrated to me to be honest 🤭🤭

Judging from your name: are you of Bavarian or Austrian descent?

You have already been offered a couple of nice places in the East and the South of Germany. To get a complete picture, I do recommend to visit the West and North as well. Different people, different mentality. Besides Hamburg, Münster could be a nice place to go, with lots of History, yet full of life due to the many students in that town.

If you‘re interested in deviating from traditional touristic hot spots, take a look at the former industrial belt region in the West, called „Ruhrgebiet“. Less nice-looking parks, facades and buildings, but instead more traces of really hard work, industrial heritage and direct, yet heartily people.

Mining museum in Bochum (afterwards have a great night out at the „Bermuda Triangle“ in Bochum), „Zeche Zollverein“ in Essen, industrial park in Duisburg (former smeltery, colorfully illuminated at dawn), „Gasometer“ in Oberhausen (impressive size with changing exhibitions inside and a great view from the top).

One of the signature features of the Ruhrgebiet is that the ways between destinations are really short, due to everything being packed into such a small area. Cities kind of „melt“ into each other and city borders are sometimes difficult to recognize. You may even be shocked when used to the open space and vast traveling distances in the US (or even the already bigger distances in other parts of Germany).

„Nearby“ (i.e. less than an hour by car) is Cologne, which could also be a worthwhile destination for its dome alone.

Oh boy. Not our proudest hours to say the least. Jewish or political? (Maier is not a typical jewish name)... Sorry, I know its none of my business; still I am curious. I stumbled across so many references to that time in my vicinity, its so interesting. History also helps understanding the present

Jewish. I grew up pronouncing it "may-er" because my grandparents changed the pronunciation to fit in (and mein Opa eventually changed how he spelled his Vorname as well), but my daughter uses the correct pronunciation :) (And since I work for a business pronounced the same as how I usually pronounce my name, I've begun to go by Mai-er as well, to avoid confusion). Blue eyes with dark hair are universal in my family, so not sure what went on with the bloodlines and origin of the "Maier" name.

I got Maier (or a variant thereof) in my name as well. Very common over here. Lower Austria, btw. And an odd family history in connection with the Nazi Reich, both good and bad

Maybe I'll visit you someday - I'm working on the paperwork for Austrian citizenship based on the change in the constitution in december (which will take forever given the procedure they make you follow).

Yeah, anytime. That‘d be cool. PN me if I can assist. You also speak Austrian? 😀

lol How is Hamburg overrated? Everything in Hamburg is easy to reach due to its size compared to Munich and Berlin. Hamburg ist die schönste Stadt der Welt. :)

Nicht mal fast.

But yes, there IS a big difference in mentality. I had a colleague (I’ve been a pilot i Germany for 12 years) from Hamburg who always bragged about how he loves the city for its beauty during approach. I never got what he loved about it. I find Hamburg rather boring, in parts pretty ugly (harbour area).

But as said, mentality differs, taste differs. Munich, for example, is much hated in the northern part of Germany. Never got why either

lol. The Harbour area is definitely not the ugly area in Hamburg, unless you are talking about the Reeperbahn. Nuremburg, Berlin and even Munich have their ugly areas. lol but as you said, everyone has their own tastes. tschüss. :)

Correct. However, eg Nurembergs City Center is amazing. I asked mentioned collegue once to show the best parts of Hamburg. I wasn‘t too impressed, not bad, not outstanding either.

I recall one time during approach from the south leading over the harbour area je said look at that view. Isn‘t that beautiful?
I was puzzled coz I found that view extraordinarily ugly. Industry all over the place, wouldn‘t wanna be buried there.
