I speak German but have never been to Germany. When I take my family for vacation after the pandemic, what are the best towns to visit?
You have already been offered a couple of nice places in the East and the South of Germany. To get a complete picture, I do recommend to visit the West and North as well. Different people, different mentality. Besides Hamburg, Münster could be a nice place to go, with lots of History, yet full of life due to the many students in that town.
If you‘re interested in deviating from traditional touristic hot spots, take a look at the former industrial belt region in the West, called „Ruhrgebiet“. Less nice-looking parks, facades and buildings, but instead more traces of really hard work, industrial heritage and direct, yet heartily people.
Mining museum in Bochum (afterwards have a great night out at the „Bermuda Triangle“ in Bochum), „Zeche Zollverein“ in Essen, industrial park in Duisburg (former smeltery, colorfully illuminated at dawn), „Gasometer“ in Oberhausen (impressive size with changing exhibitions inside and a great view from the top).
One of the signature features of the Ruhrgebiet is that the ways between destinations are really short, due to everything being packed into such a small area. Cities kind of „melt“ into each other and city borders are sometimes difficult to recognize. You may even be shocked when used to the open space and vast traveling distances in the US (or even the already bigger distances in other parts of Germany).
„Nearby“ (i.e. less than an hour by car) is Cologne, which could also be a worthwhile destination for its dome alone.
