Well on a personal level I think an $800 MacBook will upset me, but that's only cause I think it will have the same specs as my MacBook that if I remember correctly cost me $1000 9 months ago, but then again I guess paying an extra $200 for 9 months of use is worth it so...yes Steve Jobs I give you the go ahead, you can release an $800 MacBook with my permission now.

I just hope the Apple quality stays in the $800 mb if the speculation is true. I'd hate to see a "Dell-Like" product come out.

I don't think they'd HAVE to drop the quality at all, my original specs on my MacBook was 2.0 C2D 80GB HD 1GB RAM w/ GMA X3100, I'm sure prices have dropped enough on the processor, HD, RAM and GPU to make up for $300 off the current bottom line considering they sell the current bottom line refurbished for $900 and still make a profit on it I'm sure and that has a slightly better processor and 40GB more HD space

I'm guessing they'd sell the $800 one at a loss, and gain profit over the expensive ones.

I haven't read the whole thread, and sorry if it was brought up already but might it be possible the $800 notebook could actually be apple's netbook??

Yeah lots of people are speculating that it will be, while an equal or greater amount are saying that won't happen, guess we'll see on the 14th

I think I would likely be just fine without notebook blu-ray support. When I got my last PC laptop, I believed firmly in my heart that I would not be able to live without dual layer DVD burning. I am not sure that I have used it over 8 times in the life of the laptop.

Blu-ray seems like a similar function for my purposes. Something that would be nifty as heck to have, that I would likely never use.

I agree with you 100%, I've never burned a DVD in my life, and never even so much as touched a Blu-Ray disc or even watched HDTV, but Apple has to look at consumers as a whole, not just the individuals, though I do believe if they add BR at this point it will be a BTO option, not automatically included.

I'm not really that big on speculatin' in advance of an Apple event, but I do know that what goes on in the refurb store can often be a good indicator of what's coming as Apple tries to clear its inventory.

http://store.apple.com/Apple/WebObjects/ukstore.woa/wa/RSLID?sf=w2YF4JXY4AHCAJCDF&nclm=C61AFE24

The first two MacBook Pros on that page (at the time of writing) are showing a £600 discount, which is a massive reduction by refurb store standards and certainly makes me think that there's either a major spec revision or a price cut coming on the 14th.

Cheers!

Jim

Well the Mac Mini's life has been in question for a while, maybe they will replace the Mac Mini with the MacBook Mini

... or with the mac nano
I mean why would they replace a desktop with a laptop???

laptop line : Macbook, Macbook Air, Macbook Pro
Desktop line : Mac Mini, iMac, Mac Pro

it's logic to keep the mac mini

Wow.

If I wanted a 17" paving slab, I'd be VERY tempted by that! It's just a shame they're so big. Knock a few hundred off the 15" and then we're talking - especially if the new one turns out to be worse. (Always possible, if they downgrade the graphics or something)

Looks like Apple is dropping the prices on current revision refurbished laptops in the US Store as well.

$899.00 for the 2.1 GHz MacBook. If that was actual retail it'd be a killer price.

Agree.

I would love to see Apple offer a sub $900 notebook.

For typical use such as browsing, e-mail, Office apps, limited multimedia, etc., not much power is required nor needed.

Yup. I know my mother needs a replacement on her G3 iBook, and a very basic notebook that runs Safari and MS Word would be perfect.

I'd like to know how that's really going to translate for UK customers, as I would need a DVD drive.. the combo drive in itself is a ridiculous concept. Backlit would be lovely, because I don't need the size of a Pro but don't want the non-lit MacBook keyboard of current. £549.99 would be a fantastic price, of course, dependent on the specs, but fantastic nontheless.

I think this is true with most users, including business.

I wish Apple made an iMac model for business. A stripped down version if you will that cost much less than the current iMac and be focused on the typical business users needs.

So....out of 6 different computers only 2 of those are headless, seems like Apple likes having built in screens does it not? And you know you can always close the lid on a "MacBook Mini" shall we call it, and it will be just like a Mac Mini if they allow the option to keep closing it from sleeping the computer (some sort of InsomniaX software type thing, which I use often on my MB)

Now when say you need a DVD drive do you need just a DVD drive or a DVD burner? And I personally don't think the combo drive is a ridiculous idea, I've never burned a DVD in my life and find a DVD burner useless to me-however I do see what most people are saying when complaining about the combo drive and having to pay a substantial amount more to upgrade the whole system when all you want is a superdrive, I agree it should be a BTO option

The combo drive is a ridiculous idea simply because these drives aren't any cheaper. If you consider that Apple has to keep stock of them for repair purposes etc., it would probably even have been less costly to replace them by superdrives for quite some time.
superdrive, I agree it should be a BTO option
It isn't and it won't ever be because then Apple's price discrimination scheme wouldn't work anymore.

I've heard a combo drive costs more than a superdrive (because it's outdated technology). Regardless, removing the combo drive would only result in a net loss for Apple. No one will NOT buy a Mac because it has only a combo drive. They'll just cough up the extra $200 for the more powerful model. What do you know. Apple just made more money.

Apple won't stop it because it makes money. A few complaints on some forum don't bother Apple when money's at stake.
