Wouldn’t that be great !
You buy a device, you pay a lot of money for it, and you can do whatever you want with it ? A revolutionary concept.

Wait a minute ... I need to sit down

So you're saying I could buy a little handheld computer and do whatever I want with it?
Like I'd buy it ... and actually own it?

whoa...
Mind...Blown...

:D

You already can use a different photos app. And the ability to do so doesn't necessitate the ability to delete the default—it's pretty deeply-ingrained into iOS.
A photos app shouldn’t be more deeply ingrained than any other app. Photo management has nothing to do with the OS. And once alternative apps are on the same footing as Apple’s app, why should users not be able to delete the latter for more storage space and a less cluttered app library? People delete default-installed apps on other OSs as well.

No kidding, right?
I'd love for some real competition in this space

I'm willing to pay for Photo management, storage and syncing .. but only Apple gets my money for it right now since they've locked it down so much on iOS

I use it reluctantly due to the integration ... I think the Photos app mostly sucks

I'm confused. Android users cannot fully remove Chrome or the Play Store from their devices. Why the hell is Apple being forced to take these measures with iOS when Android has a much bigger slice of the mobile OS market?
Android is a designated gatekept core platform service just like iOS. The same rules apply. Maybe Apple is just more proactive in this particular instance.

such trash, just buy the phone you want, clearly if the iPhone doesnt offer what you want do f'ng buy it. I dont understand whats wrong with an ecosystem.

There is nothing wrong with an ecosystem as such, it will just offer you more choice. Just like macOS, where you can download and use any web browser, video player, etc. Apple default apps will still be there, yet Apple may need to work harder to make users actually like them.

Makes sense. Will be really interesting to see if Google allows the removal of Chrome and Play Store from their OS, seeing as so many core elements of the OS rely on those two applications/services.

Apple is definitely not forcing anyone to change those apps, you will just be allowed to do so at your own risk. I will stick to those apps, I bought an iPhone because Apple has been making those choices and for me it’s much easier and more user friendly.

The only problem with this whole story will be that I will need to spend more time setting up the phones for my family, who doesn’t care about choosing among all the possible options in the world, and eventually fixing their phone when they click on malicious links which will install malware.

“I’m glad the EU made it easier for malware developers in the name of protecting consumers” is certainly an interesting take.

Apple put themselves into a vetting role for software on 3rd party stores, as seen with the UTM SE thing from a few weeks ago. Will Apple let malware slip through out of spite or something?

Apple should just cut to the chase, ship iOS in the EU with zero apps preinstalled. At first boot present a list of all the choices for each category…. And one choice to just install all of Apple apps with a single click.

What a waste of time by these clueless politicians trying to justify their positions. The EU is a disaster and people starting to see this that’s why Vestager has been fired.
People like you seem to think all the EU does is regulate Apple. That's like .0001 of what they do. The brought a free market between countries, helped prevent war, got rid of borders and they pour a massive amount of money into infrastructure and other projects in countries that alone could never afford it.

Finally the dream of a dumb smartphone will soon realize: a device that takes no picture, receives no messages, gets no emails, plays no music or videos, has no apps and doesn’t make a phone call.

At least they can brag battery will last days on their large clock.

Unless you can also remove the clock app…

Make it easier and faster, at boot two choices ;)
🔲 Apple iPhone
🔲 Blank iPhone then waste your time going through all the possible choices

Apple's deep integration of Photos is simply really bad if you prefer anything other than Apple's app.

And also the reason this doesn't make much sense—Photos is so deeply integrated that deleting the app is bound to cause issues, unless and until Apple rearchitects iOS to allow it.

Hmm. What’s next? Mandatory that Apple allow alternative operating systems be installed on the phone? Vertical integration declared illegal?
Nothing has changed with Apple's vertical integration here. Users can leave the defaults exactly as they are now. What the EU is doing is preventing gatekeepers from using vertical integration as a tool for blocking out competition.

That law is actually not written for end users in mind. It's called a Digital MARKETS Act for a reason. The intention is to level the playground for businesses.
The intention is to transfer money from one large corporation to another large corporation.

You are completely correct about it not being for end users. Apple will hurt end users with higher costs and the other corporations will pocket the new profit and not lower costs.

I believe that in the original concept of iPhone there were apps chosen to represent the user experience that Apple wanted to give to “reinvent the phone”. Those were: Phone, Messages, Photos, iPod, Browser and Mail.
That’s the reason why they are so deeply integrated, it’s the core of the smartphone experience that differentiates the iPhone.
