I love this. Imagine if Apple added USB-C and allowed for sideloading a few years ago? They’d probably have the EU off of their necks at this point.

Looking forward to the US passing a “give us the same nice things that the EU has” Act.
Yeah because side loading and USB C have totally helped Google avoid anti-trust issues in the EU. *eyeroll*

I didn't used to think the way I do now. I used to think that Apple had the right to dictate much about iPhones.

But over the last few years, I've steadily become more and more annoyed at their actions and attitude, which I believe are against their own best interests.

They're annoying developers.
They're acting like parents in telling us customers what we can and cannot do.
They're putting up prices and offering less for that money due to a lack of competition.
They're sitting on their laurels, milking the cash cow.
They rely on lawyers instead of doing the right thing.
They don't play well with third parties and expect them to be the ones to compromise.
They've got too comfortable.

You can see the effects of this beginning with the disastrous Vision Pro. Expensive and not enough use for it.

They need a damn good kick up the backside and if the EU are the ones to do it, I'm all for it.

I want the cool, inventive, clever, cool Apple back, urgently!

US won’t pass legislation that forces competing corporations to get along when consumer choice already exists. If you wanted usb-c and customizability before iPhone 15 Pro, you’ve had Android as an option for years.
Why don’t you suggest that I move to the EU? That’s also totally a viable option.

This is getting ridiculous.
delete the messages and phone app? really? how will you receive calls and messages?
I feel like these regulations are getting out of hand. give them a finger and they’ll take the whole hand. this is the fear that governments will start with something small and helpful, and then abuse that power.
You do understand that there are hundreds of alternative apps out there on Android, Windows and macOS, right?

Yuck Hope this never comes to US. If you want this there were already options that treated the phone as a tiny computer. I want the phone to be an appliance with extensions. I dont need to manage a computer. Is the EU going to do this to the Switch? It only has one app store (oh the humanity).

No. It's for businesses and end users. Literally written by the EU people: "Consumers will have more and better services to choose from, more opportunities to switch their provider if they wish so, direct access to services, and fairer prices."
It doesn't matter what the law says. In practice it is law fare between competing corporations who couldn't compete in the market so got the govt to do their dirty work. Thats it. The real competition is between Android and Apple and thats done. This doesn't change that aspect, all this does is help some corporations get some money from another corporation. People already had options. Oh ....and almost certainly lots of eurocrats and politicians got paid off.

I’d argue that the initiative was largely triggered by Apple’s reluctance to *checks notes* utilize a universal USB cable, install unapproved applications, and upgrade to RCS or open iMessage.
The initiative was triggered by the EU being upset about not having any major consumer tech companies, because they don't realize their regulations are what stifles innovation in the EU.

Case in point, we're all stuck with USB-C now for all eternity because even though it was clear Apple was moving in that direction, they weren't moving fast enough for the EU, and now USB-C is mandated and it's not going to be worth developing a better alternative. Thank god they at least waited until after micro-usb went away.

Wouldn’t that be great !
You buy a device, you pay a lot of money for it, and you can do whatever you want with it ? A revolutionary concept.

Wait a minute ... I need to sit down

So you're saying I could buy a little handheld computer and do whatever I want with it?
Like I'd buy it ... and actually own it?

whoa...
Mind...Blown...

:D

Wait!
So Microsoft should lose $200 per Xbox sold so that I can install Nintendo's Switch software to play Mario Kart + dual boot into Ubuntu and Microsoft will never be able to recoup costs?

Amazing.

What the Apple fanbase doesn't seem to understand (or refuses to see) is that opening up some flexibility on the iPhone in terms of how you use them and what Apps you use will actually benefit Apple over the long run as it makes the hardware more appealing to more people.

Selling iPhone hardware is a MEGA business for Apple ... it is THE business for Apple

Keeping people buying and using iPhone needs to be the #1 priority for Apple leadership

They need to not care if folks want to use a different default Phone or Messaging app (Apps from which Apple makes zero revenue anyhow)... so long as people buy iPhones
You are on a forum saying a TRILLION DOLLAR company is "doing it wrong". Thats nuts. Bonkers. Crazytalk. They have people making millions talking about these tradeoffs with teams of people dedicated to researching it. And they kept the course they were most certain would make them the most money.

This will make near zero difference in apples iPhone sales because assuming apple was correct they already know only a tiny minority of weirdos care about any of this stuff being added to their phones and side loading. Who cared was other corporations pushing eurocrats. Apple was already giving their customers what they wanted.

A photos app shouldn’t be more deeply ingrained than any other app. Photo management has nothing to do with the OS. And once alternative apps are on the same footing as Apple’s app, why should users not be able to delete the latter for more storage space and a less cluttered app library? People delete default-installed apps on other OSs as well.
But what if you want it more deeply ingrained? The fact you think it shouldn't is just irrelevant to how apple wants it to be for a better experience. I really wish they would fork the OS for a garbage EU version and the rest of us can have the deepest most amazing integration ever.

So Microsoft should lose $200 per Xbox sold

Microsoft sets the price of the xbox

If they priced it a number that makes them money on what's actually being sold (hardware) and nobody buys it..

Guess what..
They don't have a viable product ;)

That's...exactly how this is supposed to work

A successful product can not and should not come from "forced bundling"

(the only reason console makers get away with any of this is the product category and how non-essential it is compared to what smartphones have become)

No, it's not. That's just a fantasy you're created to justify your argument. Much like your fantasy that copyright law doesn't exist.

How about EU could just chill a bit so Apple could focus their smart engineers on solving real issues.

And I even say this as a European citizen.

I'm so fed up with large companies not allowed to innovate anymore because regulators wants them to be busy with stuff like this.

This situation is of Apple's own making through their behavior

Your ire at the lack of innovation should be directed at Apple, not any other entity
