HTTP Live Streaming does need Quicktime X, get over it.
QuickTime X is only required for the desktop, but Safari can play HTTP Live streams natively within the <VIDEO> element. Have a look for yourself [test URI]: http://devimages.apple.com/iphone/samples/bipbopall.html

Note: The samples [see links below] show the same NTSC test pattern at four different resolutions and data rates. The last sample streams at multiple data rates. The stream starts with sample 1 and switches to the fastest sample the connection supports.:

Edit: I'm pretty confident that embedding the video stream URL in a HTML page will work with other browsers, simply because the StreamingMediaGuide.pdf [on page 20] reads: "To view the sample streams in browsers other than Safari, the QuickTime plug-in or ActiveX component is required."

Prediction:

Big announcement of Apple's push for streaming media content to customers on all their devices while the very same servers choke because of the live stream load.

Do I have to watch it from the current time? Can I start from the beginning (while it's going on)?

And does this mean the keynote stream is immediatly available after event/keynote ends?

idk bout immediately after, but definitely will be on their site later on that day

I'll be having a colosotomy and under the influence of Versed, so I wouldn't remember anything anyway:(
Over-share. But good luck.

I don't have any of those. Im gettin the new ipod touch later.

any other suggestion
Twit.tv or others will likely cross the streams. Meaning take the Quicktime X stream and redirect through uStream or similar.

This doesn't seem to be a HTTP Live Stream to me. And of course Safari can display it, when you are on Snow Leopard since you have Quicktime X and Safari uses that.

Agree - that is not live streaming... it has a counter that starts over at 1 when you reload, it is HTML5 (which is not the same thing).

I bet Engadget are gutted. Gonna lose a lot of hits because of this.

I'm sure one of the reasons for going back to live streaming is to avoid having wifi signals in the room that could cause issues like the last event. Also a good test of the streaming bandwidth that Apple may have in NC.

But keeping ad views from adding up on third part sites is another side benefit of doing it live again. Gosh, it has been ten years since the last live event, right? I used to watch them all the time including when Jobs made his iCEO appearance for the first time. :)

Unbelievably lame, for me anyway.

Recently went to reinstall, formatted hard drive, install failed. Turns out the disk is too scratched.

So I had to go back to Leopard.

Oh well, I'll have to wait for them to upload it to the site.

yay, it's been a long time since they've streamed these events. I loved tuning into them.

If it is like what Apple used to do before they stopped live streaming, you will have to watch it from the current time. No TiVo-like functionality. But with them probably announcing streaming movie/tv content, they may have time shifting in place now.

I'm surprised so many on MR don't remember when Apple used to do every event via live streaming ala QuickTime.

Does HTTP Live streaming allow for time shifting ?
