No Reason to have to Pay for a New Battery! Purposely written code to drive upgrade sales of new Phones and now we are held hostage to pay for a new battery no matter the reduced fee. Continue the Lawsuits...Apple has lost their way and Tim Cook's comp announced today is an insult to injury! "I need to fly private jets"

Well good on Apple. Most other tech companies wouldn’t even respond as most of them do not support their older products like Apple. I can imagine complaining to samsung about the S6 or S7 and Samsung would say sorry we are too busy trying to sell you the note 8 and developing the S9.

Good move. However, I'd like to get a clarification on this part:

Apple plans to provide more information on the price drop in the near future, but it will apply to anyone with an iPhone 6 or later whose battery needs to be replaced.

Who defines the need for replacement? Is is the customer this time or is it still Apple's diagnostics that appear to react much later than the throttling mechanism?

This truthful release will be shunned by self-interested lawyers and their class action plaintiffs looking for an outsized pay day for a $29 battery replacement issue. Apple should send couriers to all "official plaintiffs" anchoring class action suits with a new phone of their choice personally delivered, or better yet a new copy of the phone they have now with the ancient OS they run now!!! Firmly ensconced in the past like me!

Only solves part of the problem. For years Apple have sold phones to people who thought their old phone was dying and that they needed to get a new one, when really all they needed was a battery. I think they should address that issue.
This may address that issue:
- In early 2018, an iOS update will introduce new features to give users more visibility into the health of their iPhone's battery, so they can clearly see whether the state of the battery is affecting performance.

What app do y'all recommend to getting the specs on battery status? My wife's 6S Plus is pretty bad, but I'm not sure how to quantify "pretty bad"...
Check the cycles and other details with Coconut. If you think it doesn't hold up, you should go to the nearest Apple Store and have them do the diagnostics. With the price of just $29, I think it isn't so bad as it was before.

It was meant to make your phone last longer, not force an upgrade. It was the exact opposite.

Damage control . And a PR move, as long as I can request the battery be changed I’m okay with it

Also, does apple still need to determine that the battery needs changing, if so, this move still does not address the issue.

Amazing news and uncalled for. I imagine all the trolls will have to find something else to whine about. Apple has stepped up and addressed something that was not a big deal.

Android "Oh crap. Hope they don't find out how we make incompatible OS, Apps and everything else crappy"

I'm a big Apple fan, but calling this "uncalled for" is absolutely inane.

So eleven months is equal to years, got it.

Apple customer service is number 1, nobody can beat that!

Had it not bean for individuals on reddit, this would still be continuing. How is this customer service number 1 , when they got caught red handed and this is a damage control move.... a temp price reduction ? I believe apple still needs to run tests to determine if your battery needs changing

Apple's current policy is that a battery needs to be below 80% usable capacity for it to be replaced under AppleCare and I believe they won't do a paid replacement until the battery is below that, as well. The throttling mode also does not engage until the battery capacity is below 80%.
