I dont comepletely disagree, this applies even for out of warranty products?

Not out of warranty. Nobody cares on OOW unless the product could hurt somebody. That’s the only time they’re liable if they let you leave and you hurt yourself on it. That’s why Apple is so lenient on strain relief issues on portable power supplies - it’s their ass if you show them something harmful and they let you leave and then it cause harm.

Sorry that is wrong .

Have a read . https://www.apple.com/uk/legal/statutory-warranty/

Yes. Reddit did an analysis on this. Battery cost was $4.20 or so. Apple makes a profit from this.

So...

Just curious. That takes into consideration the cost of the monthly lease, employees hourly rate, shipping fees, cost of store operations, training etc.?

You can go back to having the software that doesn’t limit performance and crashes cause your battery is old

This could be corrected as

You can go back to having the software that doesn’t limit performance and have a probability of crashes cause your battery is old

We don't know at what threshold Apple has set the performance limitation. Perhaps it is 0.1%, ie 999 times out of 1000 the performance is limited whereas it wouldn't have crashed, ie Apple slowed your iPhone for nothing.

it took a class action lawsuit to bring Apple to it's knees and finally act honestly towards their long time customers

but Appel goal is planned obsolesce in each one of their product and they will try to disguise anything to force us to throw away perfectly functioning products and upgrade

I plan to keep my iPhone 6s for the next 20 years

Evil Tim just exposed Apple's throat to French criminal law and perhaps the attention of a revenue starved European Union.

Better yet, prison time can be involved so there is more on the line than other people's money.

I just hope the right people get thrown under the bus.

Well good thing they made a software update to prevent it from crashing then lol.

Exactly ;)

In countries with strong consumer rights , you can see why some users are outraged.

Also why you have such a huge variation on opinions on this on MR, might come down to people who believe in consumer rights and those who are not used to having them. I'll take my 5 years.... :)

It's important to note many many people (probably not us on MacRumors) cannot afford to buy a $1k phone every freaking year.

It is also important to note a lot of people buy it with subsidy from the telco and/or instalment plans or even earn a healthy enough profit from scalping newly launched iPhones to fund their new purchase. From where I live (Singapore) we change our phones every 1-2 years for the tech savvy/fashion conscious enough people and then pass down our 1-2 years old phones to our parents.

But....this is immaterial. It's ok to screw people as long as they do not realize it?

If they do not realise it, and they indirectly benefitted from it because their phones are less likely to unexpectedly shutdown at wrong moments, I don’t see how this is screwing them over.

Agreed on that. Consumer rights is abysmal in Singapore. So maybe that’s why I don’t feel as cheated. Coupled with the fact that it’s well known lithium-ion WILL degrade. I really don’t see what’s the commotion here.

Granted that Apple could have been more transparent with their solutions to prevent unexpected shutdowns and that I’m not condoning them for hiding the fact that they are throttling iPhones with worn out batteries. But at the end of the day, a slower iPhone is definitely more palatable than one that keeps shutting down for no apparent reason. I believe a phone that keeps shutting down for no good reason is a stronger reason to upgrade than one that’s slowed down (at least it’s still usable).

They could have been really honest about it and say “hey your battery is old that’s why it’s shutting down unexpectedly. You can always pay us $79 to replace your battery and keep using it!”

But at least they tried to mitigate that issue and possibly save you $79 if you can live with it being slower than when it was brand new.

this new offer from apple is great.
about 1 year ago i took apple's offer to come in and have your 6s battery replaced if it needed it.
they replaced it for free. at that time it was still under apple care.
my (new, replaced) battery health is already about 85% so i will make sure to take my 6s in and pay the small price to get it replaced again. my apple care has just expired.
its a great deal.

There might be a few EU officials calling Tim about apple taxes , to see if he changes his mind , cause under EU consumer laws, this could get out of hand very quickly ....so many bought the 6 and 6s... compensation of any sort would really mess up finacials next quarter

Nope. CEOs of large corporations, police and politicians almost never go to jail. For anything.

Not talking about UK but US. Here in America after a year you’re on your own.

Apple is global - hence the software change was to avoid pesky countries like U.K. , actually all of EU and Australia, that I am familiar with

Yeah, not a fan of US consumer protection.

Who cares, one thing you don't get out of is paying for it. I could pay 1 cent up front and 1 dollar a year for the next thousand years. I still have to pay for that phone.

Apple how about the ability to downgrade to previous IOS versions instead of a forced battery upgrade ?

I seriously don’t see this argument here. They aren’t forcing you to replace your battery if you can live with it being slower than when brand new. If they were to give you a choice, you would like a phone that’s blazing fast but shuts down every now and then for no good reason? That’s bizarre.

...and what about us iPhone 6S Plus owners that thought our devices were so ancient and were so slow that it was deemed necessary to upgrade to an 8 Plus? So you’re now telling me I only needed a new battery? What compensation do we get? Disgusting practice. I’m [was] a huge me Apple fan. The Apple is rotting.

Faster processor? Faster GPU? Built in wireless charging? Water resistance? Camera improvements?

I'm not sure why people and latching on to the 'we all know lithium ion degrades' thing. Lead acid batteries degrade too, as do nickel metal hydride items. What is the point being made here pls?

The slower iPhone upsets me, cause in the UK they would need to replace my phone . So that is why I feel cheated. If I lived in the US , I would be happy they are stopping my phone from crashing as my consumer protection went after 12 months .

I doubt Apple is looking after the US consumers here .... ;) with thier solution, they get the best of all worlds, avoid replacements and push people to upgrade .
