I think this is a good move for proliferation into the business market. I've worked for a handful of companies that the business uses Verizon. It has better penetration into the more rural markets that the business was focused. That's the reason they use the Verizon service in the first place to AT&T. This just opens the iPad up to larger business consumption.

Ideally, I would like to see a chip that could support CDMA or GSM but for whatever reason that will likely not happen.

I think Apple should get rid of the wifi only iPads. Just keep the 3G and possibly the CDMA version (why not a hybrid version?). It´s so not Apple to have 6 versions of the same product.

Some of us are tired of paying for over-priced cellular service, so it makes no sense for us to spend an additional $130 for a piece of hardware we will never use. I'm quite happy with my wifi-only ipad and if I didn't have that choice, I wouldn't have an ipad at all and Apple would have that many fewer sales.

Perhaps Apple should combine the umts/hspa and cdma/evdo models into one model like the hybrid cell phones aimed at international travelers.

And it would be great if they would just put in the chips for T-Mobile (they use a different 3G standard), CDMA, and AT&T. They have plenty of room in the iPad. Look at iFixit
That have one of those chips already!

At least with the iPad CDMA users won't be closed to concurrent voice and data restrictions.

How big is the market for CDMA iPads? It's not a standard that's used in many other countries, is it?

Only about 10% of the world uses CDMA.

Yeah, I'm with you. I don't need another data plan in my life or my wallet. If wi-fi is good enough for my MacBooks, it's good enough for my iPad. I have a MiFi for when I need data in the field and my iPhone isn't sufficient.

Ever heard of the MacBook Pro? (6 standard models)

However I think there is a definite possibility they will do this. But it will only be when they cut the cost of the 3G models to the prices of the current WiFi models.

My original idea was to switch to verizon with a new iPhone but am sticking with AT&T since I'm grandfathered with unlimited data. I undestand that both do not offer unlimited with new service but it seems like a real hinderance to using the device. Honestly, I'd rather go without than limit my use.

Congratulations, you fell for the bait.

That is a CDMA industry website. They will find whatever statistics they can (in this case, EV-DO data subscribers) so show that CDMA is growing. It's not. CDMA networks are being shut down.

The growth can be ascribed to a growing market for 3G data as a whole, not for CDMA technology in general.

Shame they can't just update the current iPad to support both standards. In time I guess.

That's hardware, not software....

And to the person who talked about unlimited data. I don't know why AT&T can't just have unlimited data and the lower plans. I use the 2GB (because seriously, 200 MB is crazy) but some people should just pay more for unlimited.

Verizon still has unlimited data, and despite popular belief, it's REAL unlimited.

Obviously you missed the part where they showed the total CDMA subscribers from 2001-2010 (not just EV-DO subs)...

But, putting the continued of CDMA sub growth aside, do you really think it would be stupid of Apple to not go after even a portion of the 500+ million subscribers with a model that supports them? The majority of CDMA subs are in China and the US. They are more likely to plop down over $600 for a device...

Big Macs cost lest than ¢.50 to produce but you still pay $4.00 for them..businesses refer to this as "turning a profit"

I really don't think that's it. Apple went to great lengths to make the iPad as cheap as they could. Remember when everyone thought it would cost $1,000 and then it came in at $500 and everyone was surprised?

In light of that, there is no way they just decided to take a $129 profit on that chip. No...I think it's a sure bet that a good chunk of that money goes to AT&T as part of some agreement they have. There's just no way Apple tries to make the iPad cheap and then charges that much for an add-on voluntarily.

The world wide market share for CDMA might 'only' be 10%, but you have to remember that Apple sells 50% of iPhones/iPod Touches in the US (I suspect it is a similar number for iPads).

In the US, the CDMA market share is closer to 50%.

Ding ding ding! :D

CDMA is a North American standard. The rest of the world uses GSM although the new standard LTE (4G) is more of a convergence of world standards. CDMA was essentially a North American standard competing with GSM. Don't really see the need for a CDMA version when most carriers in N. America are going to HSPA (3.5G) and then LTE....

CDMA is NOT a North American standard and it is used in other countries around the world. Yes, not as widely used as GSM, but it is NOT only in North America. Honestly, where do you people get this crap?

If they do it. Good for them I'm pig sick as a international reader of mac rumors to have so many bleeding rumors surrounding verizon all the bleedin time!
