Glad they're offering a refund to those who already purchased a bumper.

The stats about .55% of customers calling AppleCare to complain about antenna issues is very misleading. I definitely have issues with my antenna but I never called AppleCare because I knew what they would say from the information I receive on sites like MacRumors. Everyone I know has this issue and non of them took it in to get fixed or replaced because we all knew they wouldn't be able to do anything for us. With the growing amount of press regarding this issue, I'm sure most of the iPhone 4 users with the issue decided to wait until today to see what Apple had to say.

I think this is fair. I still have a 3GS and I have always had a rubber case protecting the sides and back anyway. BUT it just occurred to me that Jobs several times states that "we'll evaluate on September 30th" in terms of free bumpers and so on. He said that is response to questions a couple of times. Anyone think that they figured our a real hardware change on the models shipping AFTER that date? Maybe they figured out the issue and have a real fix that won't be ready until phones released after that date?

This isn't a recall.

Just if you don't like the iPhone, return it.

Also I wonder if they will change some of the design soon, but not notify anyone. So by Sept. 30th, there might be a new design inside.

Here's to color CHOICE

Glad to see that we get a case but hopefully the choice will come with whatever COLOR we want. I don't mind waiting but would like a certain color... wonder if I shouldn't just buy it now and get reimbersed later!

I bet all the case makers are going to be pleased with this news, I'm very surprised Apple is offering this deal with 3rd party cases also. I'm just hoping for some good looking AND well fitted cases to be released soon.

Oh well, no fix though. I didn't suffer with the problem up in Uni in Newport but once I came back home to West Wales where coverage is alot more spotty I have to think about how I hold my phone when taking calls or they drop. Love the phone far too much to take it back, free case it is!

- iOS 4.0.1 fixes the signal strength display issue by recalibrating the "bars" displayed, and all customers should apply the software update.

WOW...serio??? I feel the whole, "fixes the signal strength display" is a clever way Apple will add more bars to the display while not improving any signal strength whatsoever...just my opinion :)

This seemed like a pretty level-headed and fair reaction to what was a sensationalized over-reaction by the media and SOME users.

I have had an iPhone 4 since launch and love it. I bought a case on day 2 but I've always used a case on all 3 iPhone's I've owned.

You can dispute Apple's data all day long but the bottom line is you can get a 100% refund if you don't like it.

I'm sure people will whine and bitch anyhow....

PURE TRIPE.

July 16th 2010 in years to come will be seen as the turning point, where Android became the winner anD iOS the loser.

Why not be like Steve and not use one ;)

I personally felt that everything at the conference today rang true. Overblown issue, on an over-rated product (over rated in the sense where many feel it is a God of phones, more than just an awesome phone)

Whats the harm in returning your phone for a new one to see if it might help at all? Worth a shot right? If your willing to return it to buy another phone, you should be willing to try a different free one first.

Sure I know it deals with your location, but I still feel like its worth the shot. If they are only giving out free cases till the end of September, then I personally still feel (though I know Steve said other wise) that phones being pumped out after then.... wont experience this issue.

First - the whiny, angry little pricks on this board are mating like wild rabbits. Go away. I long for a more circumspect, chill Macrumors community.

Second - I purchased a bumper a couple weeks ago, I actually love it, and I've never been a case guy. I like the integrated buttons and the fact that it doesn't cover the front or back. Two thumbs up.

Not often a company gives you free stuff. I'll take it. Thanks, Apple. Keep doing your best.

Not good enough

What this press conference did not do is give me ANY confidence whatsoever in buying an iPhone 4. A week ago I bought one. It didn't work with my Alpine head unit in my car (But my 3GS worked fine). The proximity sensor was such an issue that 1 out of every 3 calls were muted unintentionally. There were other minor bugs.

I do not want to purchase a phone that requires a case. How ridiculous. So I do not understand Apple's 'offer' or 'fix' of offering a free case for a limited period.

Neither do I understand why Steve Jobs did not unequivocally state that consumers should go out now and buy an iPhone 4 because it was absolutely fine.

To me the iPhone 4 remains a flawed product. In addition to the antenna issue, the software, the proximity sensor and the growing list of compatability problems what has not been addressed is the arrogant use of glass as a material. This renders the possibility of the phone breaking high after multiple drops. After having my 3GS for nearly 18 months and dropping it many times it remains intact. Having to worry about all of these issues in something you carry and rely on everyday is right now just too much to bear.

A shame - I'm a complete Apple fanboy and have been since my LCIII eons ago. But I can't bring myself to buy the iPhone 4, however much I miss that stunning display!

His numbers were garbage.

When I returned my phone, because it wouldn't make a call without failing, the reason indicated on the RMA was "changed mind".

Also you don't buy an Armani suit to walk around with a parka over it all day. Why couldn't they just admit to the conductivity issues and tell people they were going to fix it?

I don't think he gave numbers on number of phones returned due to a defect, but rather the total number of returned phones -- did I miss something here?

I'm reasonably satisfied with his response here. He takes the problems seriously, Apple cares about customers, they try their level best to make things right, and they can't really solve this antenna issue. I'm alright with all of it --

I needed a reason to stay in love with Apple and I'm there! Even though yes, I do have the antenna problem. And I bought TWO bumpers!

It's just too hard not to love Apple and admire Steve Jobs.

since when has 100% been considered a "very small proportion"?

Every single person can duplicate this, it is a design flaw.

EVERYONE

If you are unhappy with your phone, RETURN IT. Otherwise shut up.

This is Apple's solution until iPhone 5. Take it our leave it.

I haven't decided if I want to return it yet. The problem hasn't strongly affected me yet (only have seen it a few times when I had bad service to begin with), but I will be moving in a month or so, and I don't want to end up somewhere that has poorer service and constantly have my calls drop unless it's in a case. I wasn't bashing Apple or anything, I love my phone, just a little worried.

But thanks again for your useless input.
