If you are unhappy with your phone, RETURN IT. Otherwise shut up.

This is Apple's solution until iPhone 5. Take it or leave it.

Facts don't lie. Only 0.55% of users call AppleCare with problems. Only 1.7% return rate, versus 6% for 3GS. Dropped calls on par with 3GS. Attenuation happens on other phones. Despite all of this, Apple still gives out free cases...

Even if the 30 days ends on the 23rd/24th the signup for the free case isn't supposed to take place until the end of next week. Which if you are keeping count is when the first round of expirations will start to take place.

So if there is a hardware fix come September 30th, can we exchange our gimped phones for a new one?

If Apple manages to defy the laws of physics that are responsible for every smartphone on the planet experiencing signal attenuation when touched...

They'll probably let you exchange it for a unicorn.

angryandstupid- Prove that VISTA broke for MOST customers the exact same way that made you use the computer in an unusual manner. Can't.

I think it's very generous of Apple to offer refunds on the bumpers, but I also think that $29 is too much to pay for it in the first place. If the bumpers were cheaper, I'd get a few in different colors just for fun. I think I'll apply for a refund and use it to buy another pink bumper. I really don't want another type of case. Right now, the bumpers aren't shipping for 3 weeks! I love the phone and wouldn't think of returning it.:)

So what's different with iPhone purchases after Sept 30th? They get screwed strait up, or hardware change hitting the field by that point? Strange

Well, it's clear from this press conference that Apple does not consider this to be a significant problem. So, in their view, giving free cases is just an extra goodwill action on their part, but they shouldn't even have to do that, because most smartphones have similar problems. From that perspective, they shouldn't be expected to give away free cases for iPhone 4's forever. End of September is as good a date to pick as any.

My prediction: That date is after Apple's next major iTunes announcement event. So everyone will be talking about the new apple TV, the new streaming iTunes, and the new iPod Touch with Facetime. The media will have forgotten about the antenna issue by then, just like they forgot about a similar reception issue the iPhone 3G had in the month or two after it was launched.

Far fewer phones have been returned, which I think says everything. Very few people are experiencing this issue.

assuming those numbers are fact, and now simple marketing. i know that if i went to the trouble of standing in line to get an iPhone i would certainly have been waiting for apple to announce a recall, or fix the issue through software.

a free case until september 30th is their "fix", which means they will most definitely be seeing far more returns at the point.

His numbers were garbage.

When I returned my phone, because it wouldn't make a call without failing, the reason indicated on the RMA was "changed mind".

Also you don't buy an Armani suit to walk around with a parka over it all day. Why couldn't they just admit to the conductivity issues and tell people they were going to fix it?

+1

I just wish I knew which cases were going to be eligible under the free program. The Scosche case I ordered from macmall still hasn't shipped. Now I don't know if I should cancel the order or not......

iphone bumpers no longer available on apple store (surprise surprise)

Has anyone tried the Zagg Skin, comes with a film to protect the side antenna, so should stop the issue! I binned the side protection as i was using a bumper anyways, in hindsight wish i had kept it now!

Since 4.0.1 my signal - or more accurately the data transfer rate - has been much improved.v:)

+1 I agree with this. I would still like details on how much apple will reimburse for third party cases, presumably £25 as that's the cost of the bumper.

iphone 4 fix

There is clearly issues with the phone. Why can't Apple admit to it rather than trying claim everything else is the problem, even people holding the phone the wrong way. I don't mind a bumper or case, but that is a band-aid to cover up the issue. If Steve gets great reception right on Apple's campus, it just goes to show that both ATT and Apple do not care about the rest of the country as far as signal strength goes. I love my iphone 4, and it works better than my 3g ever did. Steve, just give it to us straight and stop bitching about people who point out the obvious flaws.

What this press conference did not do is give me ANY confidence whatsoever in buying an iPhone 4. A week ago I bought one. It didn't work with my Alpine head unit in my car (But my 3GS worked fine). The proximity sensor was such an issue that 1 out of every 3 calls were muted unintentionally. There were other minor bugs.

I do not want to purchase a phone that requires a case. How ridiculous. So I do not understand Apple's 'offer' or 'fix' of offering a free case for a limited period.

Neither do I understand why Steve Jobs did not unequivocally state that consumers should go out now and buy an iPhone 4 because it was absolutely fine.

To me the iPhone 4 remains a flawed product. In addition to the antenna issue, the software, the proximity sensor and the growing list of compatability problems what has not been addressed is the arrogant use of glass as a material. This renders the possibility of the phone breaking high after multiple drops. After having my 3GS for nearly 18 months and dropping it many times it remains intact. Having to worry about all of these issues in something you carry and rely on everyday is right now just too much to bear.

A shame - I'm a complete Apple fanboy and have been since my LCIII eons ago. But I can't bring myself to buy the iPhone 4, however much I miss that stunning display!

You don't even have one and your complaining, this is exactly what Jobs was talking about. "all these issues"??????

Why not buy it and SEE if you have an issue!

You have after all 30 days to return it so what's the big deal.

It's a lot better than coming on here and making this ridicules ultimatums without even experiencing the phone in your environment.

Put your money where your mouth is pal, if your such an apple fan boy, what happen to your trust in a company that has always done the right thing by you?

Your an example of the whiners and the prophets of the doomsday scenario. Plainly reacting to stuff you read and not stuff you experience.

Enjoy your 3Gs!

Do you think he will give me a refund for my iPhone 3G as well? With the new software updates the phone is getting sluggish. A phone should function well for a least the 2 year contract period. Apple is obsoleting the useful life of the iPhone within 18 months.

I heard Job's response "Buy new hardware".

The last iPhone I purchase.

Clearly this was a design issue and is purposely in effect to increase security by not allowing stupid people to use an iPhone.

Only 0.55% of iPhone 4 users have called AppleCare with an antenna issue. The other 99.45% were holding the phone in their left hands and couldn't get through.

Hell has frozen over.

In all seriousness though, I found all the numbers pretty convincing of Steve's points. Far fewer phones have been returned, which I think says everything. Very few people are experiencing this issue.

Understand this please....The reason all the people saying they arent experiencing issues is because they have a case or bumper, Im pretty sure is the case.....Everyone is saying stop crying and buy a bumper..Well, if I'm not mistaking we purchased the Iphone 4 of looks as well, and off looks some dont want to hide their phone...You and everyone else that say they arent having issues take it out of your bumpers/case make a video and prove it...I have had my Iphone 4 for three days I know the issue is real...Acworth,GA area, and Atlanta,Ga area....I have owned the 3g and 3gs and the 3gs outperformed this phone on reception hands down

What a LOAD OF CRAP

Some people do NOT want a case on their phone it hides the look and kills the feel they like.

I'm getting a DROID instead

Your right, nothing "feels" as natural as going without a case. But shouldn't you be concerned about protection? There are cases out there that are thinner, that can give you that natural feel. You just have to find them.
