Back where we started. It has reception problems. Fix it with a case. If this doesn't work for you use something else. Only difference I see is that the case is free. I for one use a case anyway so I see this as just getting a free case. I would like to see a more permanent fix in the hardware design come out soon if they can figure it out. This compromise seems fair.

So what's different with iPhone purchases after Sept 30th? They get screwed strait up, or hardware change hitting the field by that point? Strange

Not the perfect fix people were looking for but I guess it's a start. It just kind of sucks that you are forced to use the bumper case now.

I couldn't help but laugh when he said "Only 0.55% of iPhone 4 customers have called AppleCare about the antenna issue."

WTF am I going to call AppleCare about a problem everyone knows about?

Those numbers a dead wrong. I guess for future issues, no matter how common, I am going to call and complain to AppleCare, so they put me in their statistics.

Overall, complete BS.

Very few people are reporting the problem to Apple support.
(There fixed it.)

How else do you propose to figure out how many people are experiencing the issue?

If someone is experiencing the issue either:
1.) It is enough of a problem that they find the issue inhibits their experience with the phone, in which case they should report the issue to apple, return the phone, or both.
OR
2.) the issue is not significant enough for that person to bother returning the phone or complaining to apple about it, in which case it doesn't deserve to be counted as a significant issue for that person.

Note that those who go onto message boards or youtube to complain or report their issue are a minority of the real number of iphone4 users. So you can't draw any reliable conclusions about how many people are experiencing the issue from that. (You can get a lower bound, I suppose, by just counting up all the youtube videos showing the problem, but that number is going to be far far less than 0.55% of 3 million.)

First - the whiny, angry little pricks on this board are mating like wild rabbits. Go away. I long for a more circumspect, chill Macrumors community.

Second - I purchased a bumper a couple weeks ago, I actually love it, and I've never been a case guy. I like the integrated buttons and the fact that it doesn't cover the front or back. Two thumbs up.

Not often a company gives you free stuff. I'll take it. Thanks, Apple. Keep doing your best.

BRAVO!

Jobs said they might have a new fix by then so they will see where they are at ("evaluate") and decide if they want to continue offering free cases or if they will have a new fix (hardware or otherwise).

TIME TO MOVE ON PEOPLE. There are children starving to death and oil spill disasters!

Vista my arsh

Who was the rumdum that said iPhone 4 was Apple's Vista? Microsoft sure as hell didn't give out a free bumper for Vista.

I think the case is really the only response they can do. If that's unacceptable, you can return the phone.

Saying that, the conference was filled with total BS. The videos of other phones being effected clearly had the guy squeezing the phone as hard as he could (his hand was red!). And the statistics say nothing that actually means anything.

Could have done with just releasing a statement and confirming free cases without all the BS sprinkled on top.

So if there is a hardware fix come September 30th, can we exchange our gimped phones for a new one?

Why does it matter? The phone hasn't been out 30 days. If you need to return it, return it now.

because I got mine on 1st day, by the time bumper arrives, my window of return is over-happy to keep if bumper works, would buy one if it were available.

If the dropped bar problem only occurs in low signal strength area's I think I won't be needing a bumper at all since there are cell towers here every 2 kilometers (1,24 miles for the non-metrics... :p)

It only compromises the look of the phone which I think is pretty awesome. July 30th, I can't wait.

since when has 100% been considered a "very small proportion"?

Every single person can duplicate this, it is a design flaw.

Possibly every single person can duplicate this if they try with all their might to, and travel out to the **** coverage areas to make it happen...........

Just as 100% of all pencils will snap if you bend them hard enough... are pencils a design flaw?

Dont purposely bring the phone to its brink and then complain about it, the fact is sure if this issue affects every phone, its doesn't affect it enough to interrupt most peoples daily lives...

Well, at least Apple is now offering free bumpers and a chance to return the iphone 4.. So I'm happy about that. But its a little disappointing that Steve decided to go ahead with the design just so the iphone 4 looks better.
