I would actually like it if they allowed live streaming services to fully integrate into the TV app. I use Xfinity Stream and Sling (sometimes) and the user interfaces leave a lot to be desired. I’d like it better if the TV app had a “Live TV” tab or something where all the live channels you get from your live streaming providers were shown and watchable directly in the TV app…kind of like how you can view certain Channels in the TV app but also in their own standalone apps if you prefer. It would make it a lot easier to navigate between Apple TV content and live streaming content for the non-tech savvy in my family, too, and would replace the old clunky cable box for my parents.

Edited to add that I’d like the option, too, of accessing third party content and apps like Disney+, Netflix, Hulu, HBO, etc through Channels on the TV app. I use Channels all the time for BritBox, BBC Select, The Great Courses, etc and it’s very slick. I would honestly probably watch more content from those third party apps if they had tighter integration with the TV app since I often forget to look in those other apps for new things to watch. Of course, like the Channels I mentioned above, these services would still have their own separate apps downloadable from the App Store for people who prefer to watch them that way. Basically, having everything in one place would be so much easier for me and my family to navigate everything.

While I’m on my soapbox, I really wish they’d bring back the old TV app icon. It matches the rest of the Apple app icons so much better and would help differentiate between the app itself and the TV+ streaming service.

Totally agree. What I want is for my “Library” to be for both purchased content as well as streaming content that I want to save and organize. I have a couple “go to” shows I put on when I have nothing else I’m watching or just want something on in the background (Frasier, Seinfeld, etc). Why can’t I add those to my Library for easy access whenever I want to quickly pick an episode and play? Up Next is just for single episodes, and then those are removed after you play them.

On top of that, the Library is still missing the ability to see and add playlists and folders on mobile. That’s basic functionality — and it’s already in the Mac app!

Yes to all of this! If I subscribe to a channel that gives me access to a certain show, I should be able to favorite that show or something to add it to my library. If I cancel the subscription, the show goes away from the library. That would be so convenient.

It boggles my mind that Apple still hasn’t cut a deal with Netflix to integrate with the TV app.

I’d probably watch more Netflix if they did!

It's about the Apple TV App on the Apple TV (device) that currently allows you to watch Apple TV+. Apple will combine the current "TV Shows" and "Movies" apps into the Apple TV App on the Apple TV.
Wow, I had no idea there was a "TV" app on the actual Apple TV. That is absurd. I would expect that the base "OS" or runtime of the Apple TV would always offer up Apple content, and then third-party apps separately.

Apple's media "organization" is sheer stupidity, and always has been. Your media are scattered everywhere, and it gets worse all the time. Try getting your own videos onto your iOS device, for example. It does not even appear to be possible. Unlike the "Photos" tab in iTunes (or Finder masquerading as iTunes), the "Movies" tab has no Browse button... so you can't tell it where to copy video files from on your computer. WTF!

The Apple TV app has a Library section which shows Recent Purchases, Movies, TV Shows and Rentals. Not sure where Wish List is.

The Store section looks like the iOS iTunes Store app, so I should have no problems with Apple removing unnecessary Movies and TV Shows apps.

Apple plans to overhaul the TV app in an effort to consolidate its Apple TV+ streaming service and its standalone movie and TV show purchase options, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. A tvOS update in December will introduce the changes that Apple has planned.

To push users to the Apple TV app, Apple plans to remove its standalone Apple TV apps that are available for renting and purchasing TV shows and movies. The movie and TV show sections from the iTunes Store app on iPhones and iPads will also be eliminated.

Apple wants to push customers to the TV app, which already houses purchased movies and shows, Apple TV+ content, and third-party channels that customers can subscribe to.

The TV app will serve as a hub for streaming content, and Gurman says the redesigned app will have a side panel at the left that can be used to navigate between different video categories.

Updated navigation should make the TV app less confusing for consumers, making it clearer which content is from Apple and available through the Apple TV+ subscription and which content requires a separate subscription.

Merging all these apps into the TV app may very well turn it into the next iTunes!
