It’s ads for films and series though. That’s kind of what I want in a TV content app, for discovery.

I would understand your annoyance if it was for washing powder or something.

Give it time.

And I don’t have a problem with showing me new things. But every single thing in that giant ad banner and all the ads smothering the tiny row of content I actually choose to watch, is something for a service I don’t have that it wants me to subscribe to.

You don’t think that the Apple TV app has gotten worse? Name one way it is improved from its original version. The only changes it has received have been to pump it more and more full of ads.

Even that would be acceptable if they fixed even one bug. But they don’t. They keep making the actual watching experience worse while increasing the ad load.

I don’t want discovery in the Apple TV app anyway. I foolishly purchased content from them and that’s the only way to watch it. If I had known iTunes would turn into an ad platform I would have just bought it from Amazon.

Maybe this update will allow us to make playlists of content we own.

Or, even better, maybe it will allow us to select a random episode of content we own. It takes my wife 5 minutes to pick an episode of The Office each night. Just gimme a random button!!

I would really love to see Netflix get integrated into the TV app (I know that Netflix refuses to do it). We have Hulu, Max, Disney all integrated pretty well, but Netflix requires you to specifically go to the app each time, and the Netflix app is a janky wall of junk to get to the stuff I care about. There is tons of potential for the TV app, it just seems to have too many cooks in the kitchen dictating things. I also wish that tvOS was better about prioritizing playing purchased items over things on Crunchyroll or Hulu. TV has definitely evolved for the better since its initial release, but there is tons of room for improvement.

I don’t really use it much. I use wako and jellyfin/infuse to stream it all the my atv. But I do find it useful watch the tv app for ads to discover new shows and occasional buy a month to binge something. I wouldn’t ever purchase anything from it with all the drm, nor iTunes.

Yes. But they don’t seem to be aiming to get the user experience right. They’re constantly redesigning to maximize the monetization opportunity.

It’s unfortunate, because the Apple TV is otherwise a solid device.

Apple sure has changed.

We started with an Apple IIc. Our most recent Macs are M1 MBA's, a refurb Intel iMac, a Mac Studio & display. (Plus various other i-devices and Apple TVs) Over that time, Apple went from being scrappy and completely attached to the user base, to being detached under Sculley, to being friendly to the user base, to now apparently viewing the customer as nothing but a cow to be milked. They show this in so many ways that there's no room to list them here. I get that they are a business, a very large business. But, they are also insular and seemingly don't give one rat's behind about the customers and make that crystal clear.

I'm thinking that the batch of Apple products I mentioned above may be our last. Or, at least, we won't be so interested in updating anything unless there is a really, really great reason to. Coolness is not a good reason for us any longer. Broken and unfixable qualifies.

Yeah I got lazy a few years ago and tried to go legit in terms of media acquisition. But just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in...

All I wanted was a reasonable way to purchase video files for a fair price and view them without being treated like a criminal or a set of eyeballs to be marketed at. Apparently this is a ridiculous and unreasonable request.

Guys i just came up with the most revolutionary TV design. Pure simplicity and a ux so intuitive a toddler could set it up and operate it. A whole TV experience controlled by a single rotating knob. When you turn it, it clicks “on” and powers the tv on, and by default displays your Aux source. In the absence of an Aux source, its just like a display of something like snow falling. then when you keep turning it, it switches between all the available “channels” of streaming content, each one numbered with an assigned number thats the same on everyones tv so you can tell someone “hey watch channel 9 at 7pm” and it’ll be the same content, so you & your social circles can coordinate, watch & talk about your favorite content in real time! You’ll feel “more connected” to the world. When you turn the knob all the way around, it hits the power setting again and turns the whole unit off. An idea worth a trillion dollars. I call it Tele-Vision Live, or TV for short.

Simple question I am not sure of the answer to: will you then be able to buy and rent films from within the Apple TV App? Or...no. They can't just stop supporting purchase and rentals, can they?

For the most part nothing changes with the AppleTV App, everything you could do before you’ll still be able to do so.
They’re just phasing out/discontinuing the separate iTunes Store apps.

When you own a show, they automatically upgrade it for free to the best version. For example, when Babylon 5 came out in HD, the versions I purchased before was upgraded without me doing anything.
That only happens if it was purchased via iTunes. If the movie is synced via Movies Anywhere, it does not get automatically upgraded. Yet the TV app shows that you own the 4K version even though you don't. Only the iTunes app shows which version you own correctly.

It's about the Apple TV App on the Apple TV (device) that currently allows you to watch Apple TV+. Apple will combine the current "TV Shows" and "Movies" apps into the Apple TV App on the Apple TV.
That's good to hear. The article was terribly written. In fact I doubt whether the author understands. Macrumors really should proofread articles for clarity and accuracy.

It’s a better idea. No need for multiple apps doing the same thing. I already access my purchase TV shows and movies from the TV app.

Personally, I think I'll upgrade to 17.1 and turn off "auto" system updates for the ATVs. Hopelessly crossing my fingers that Apple doesn't have a kill switch implanted for their Movies App....

seems to me no one will write for green lit TV shows in the future

starting in 2024.

we will be forced to watch sports and news, 24/7
as MAX is forcing down our throats.

why be creative and make people laugh or get inspired as discontinued show did?
that ideology screws up amazon sales and thew whole zoom thing.

With this great naming scheme it is hard to tell what you are referring to... "TV" is that the App, Service or console? LOL

The console is all 100% great! I upgrade every hardware release. The only issues I have is phawking AriPlay bugs. Apple fix, then break the protocol. I find that super annoying. I feel like every tvOS update is still in beta with how it performs. By the time the OS is fixed it's on to a new OS with everything broken again. DUMB. Right now new OS, has AirPlay with multiple speakers bug. I used be able to connewct 6 HomePods then use the remote to bring volume up and down in syync. NOt anymore, that's broken. Then the extra pairs of HomePods will drop out, then a left or right channel, then crackle.. then restarting console. STUPID.

I hope Apple devs do a good job with a update for the Apple TV App, but up to now people with lvery large digital collections using the library function will see it fail to show ones collection while the iTunes TV and Movies Apps still works.

That means fundamentally Apple TV app as it is present is not a solution to all its user community such as avid iTunes content collectors.

I’d imagine they’d more than likely just sever the link to the server so when you open the app it’ll just be blank.
For a while it’ll probably just have a promt telling you to use the tv app just like the Trailer app did when that was discontinued.
