All this belly-aching over a bag? What are we 3 and need an adult to scold us that plastic bags are not toys? Seriously? It's a BAG for crying out loud.

I can't recall caring about a store's bags... Ever. But plenty of stores -- high end stores -- have paper bags. Neimans, Nordstrom, Bally, Zenga, Saks, on and on. For all you fretting, they work just fine transporting your purchase home.

Now as for the enviro claim, a lot of knee-jerk reaction here too. My guess is Apple's primary motive here isn't environmental but that makes great sub-text to further Apple's eco image. More plausible is that Apple's current bag is quite expensive to make as far as shopping bags go. This is a way to cut expenses the same way, say, peanut companies do by stealthly start filling 90 peanuts per jar instead to 100 & launch the "shorted" bottles with a new mesmerizing label to distract buyers. Over time that extra 10 peanuts x millions of jars sold = lots of $. The Eco wrapper Apple is putting on it gives Apple cover to look caring rather than corporate penny pinchers. But Apple missed a PR beat here releasing the bag on tax day rather than Earth Day. But that's predictable under TC's Apple.

Environmentally though, paper is heavier and denser than plastic. That means fewer bags per box & also more energy needed to transport them. So paper is not necessarily better for the enviro. Most plastics are recyclable these days & most communities Apple has stores have comingle recycling. Plastic bags made of majority recycled plastic also exist.

But again I can't get upset over a bag. Absence of a 64MB 9.7 Pro for $599, well, yes.

If Apple cared about the environment that much, they would stop using real leather on iPhone cases and Apple Watch bands. Animal agriculture is the largest driving force for climate change, water pollution and deforestation.

I actually think they look a bit tacky, the plastic ones.

Also, interestingly in the UK they seem to pick and choose who they charge 5p for a bag

Am I the only one here who LOVES the current bags? I use them for just about everything. I must own over 30 of them lol.
You're not; I think that removing them completely is a mistake. While I can understand wanting to remove them for people who're just going to throw them away, it'd be nice to see them still being offered, perhaps at some small nominal fee, similar to "bag for life" schemes; paper bags would then be given to anyone who doesn't want a bag to actually keep.

I hope the paper bags will be glossy or something though, as the main purpose of a bag for an Apple product isn't necessarily to make it easier to carry IMO, but to help to protect it from the elements.

It's not as straight forward as 'plastic bag = 5p' As I understand it, (happy to be corrected) it has to have handles to count as a plastic bag, and the contents of the bag can negate the charge, so if you're buying fresh fish for example, the charge doesn't apply.

We make something so simple, so complicated. I blame the EU. :)

Aargh!

I'm getting sick of all the environment-driven policies. Don't get me wrong - I do care about the environment. I use LED light bulbs, I've deliberately switched to more energy efficient versions of various products, etc.

And I do - as far as possible - make secondary use of bags, not just throw them away.

But we need to pull back on policies that put environment ahead of practical needs. Living in a generally rainy country, paper bags have a considerable drawback - they fall apart when they get wet.

If you can switch out harmful plastic bags to something less damaging, that won't disintegrate in a drizzle, then fine. But first and foremost, I need a bag TO ACTUALLY FUNCTION AS A BAG.

I guess I'm in the minority in not caring. The plastic bags generally get thrown away by me, its not like I have a trophy case and proudly display my apple bag. Plastic bags, such as these do more harm then good to the environment so why not phase them out.

they already said in the note that they will encourage you to not take a bag
Well they're not going to say 'Do you REALLY need a bag? They're just going to ask instead of automatically going for one, I doubt they're even going to mention anything about the enviroment

Darn! I'm really gonna miss the current plastic bags. I understand paper bags are better for the environment but there's something so nice about the current ones!
Paper bags may biodegrade quicker than plastic, but the fuel emissions transporting the heavier and thicker paper bags are higher and in the long run are worse for the environment.

Took them long enough. Seriously. Every high-end retailer uses premium paper bags that fold flat but maintain a rigid shape when being carried with a nice shiny logo.

Simply from a marketing perspective, the Plastic Apple Bag was in need of a refresh anyway.

My opinion, I only use paper bags because they are highly recyclable. In San Francisco, plastic isn't even an option. You bring your own or you get paper when shopping. Plastic is oil-based and needs to be phased out anyway. For those of us who already intentionally fend off the use of plastic, this is a good thing.

Amazed they don't just give (or sell) reusable bags for your next purchase or to use when doing your weekly shop.
This would be nice. Oppo (a high end Bluray maker) uses a nice reusable bag in all of there packing, they get quite a bit of use around the office.

Crap. I just gave one of my bags to my mum. I need to get it back...
Someone is already selling the plastic Apple bags on eBay for $5.00 bucks they are iconic. Most likely an Apple Store employee who took a whole bunch of them home.
