I never understood that. It was just the sheer number of people who couldn’t be bothered to look for another browser right?

And at the time (amazingly) Internet Explorer was actually one of the best browsers out there.

Heh. Talk to me when M$ includes Office suite for free with anything they sell. The stuff that comes on non-apple powered devices is whatever third parties want and have been able to negotiate. That at least isn't the same thing as what Apple is doing.

I will however concede your point that none of it need be offered, rather allowing the individual customer to grab what they will after purchase of a device. That seems fair. 'Here's a list of things you can get from us for nothing--take what you will and leave the rest' is likely the best option.
