I can't wait to NOT get the following:

Copy and Paste
MMS
Video Recording
Wide Screen Texting and Emailing
Custom SMS tones.
Stop with your damn pessimism for God's sakes. No one wants to hear someone cheering for the negative. A bit of a hollow victory, don't you think?

Anyway, I cannot wait. I don't mind waiting to receive it, but as long as I see what's in it, I'll be able to be held over for awhile.

"And that's the amazing new iPhone 3.0 Operating System." *applause* "But wait, there's one more thing..."

What does everyone think it could be? A Netbook or Snow Leopard?

What is with the iPhone HD? The screen is so small it wouldn't make a difference. Just like Bluray is pointless on TV smaller than like 40 inches.
Quoted for truth.

But this is an exciting time to be a day-one iPhone user. June 29 is right around the corner... the AT&T contract is winding down. How will they keep my business? Can't wait to find out on the 17th!

$100 says they introduce "silly" features like copy and paste, multiple picture emailing yet somehow make it only for the new version iPhone they will also (theoretically for my fantastical argument) release claiming something like, "Oh well copy and paste requires the new 600mhz processor that's coming out for the final release of OS 3.0. March is only the beta release for devs".

Oh oh oh oh, and with their newly released iPhone "G4" (Yeah, that's right, G4) that can only utilize the new software I'm also calling Shuffle like headphones where the Home and Lock/Off buttons are now placed on them, you can only use an Apple branded computer to sync the device, can only wear a black turtleneck and jeans while using it, must drive a hybrid to coincide with the green theme, and you must pay with your first born child's innocent soul.

It will also feature a revolutionary gold plated, platinum dymand threaded material which is reinforced by pieces of nails from Noah's ark and will be powered by a revolutionary "All Battery Design": the entire thing is now made from a non-removeable battery and has no screen so you have more time to be productive.

Just you wait!

Nah. The only reason to preview the SDK is for developers. Some major additions are happening on the software and maybe hardware end that they need to give a heads up to developers so that when they launch in June they will have apps utilizing these new features.

No it won't be free, because this is a major upgrade, and maybe you don't even want it, or maybe you won't be able to install it on older iPhone models :D

For your information, iPhone users have never paid for a version upgrade ever.

New iPhone 3.0 features

Mandatory upgrade or else your iPhone will not get a signal.
Breaks all jailbreaking techniques.
Breaks the future 2.2.1 Yell0w Sn0w update.
No longer able to crack apps.
New clock icon.

That would be awesome.

While my earlier precognition is a product of my addled brain, your post sums up my expectations in "normal" terms.

Apple is the greatest magician ever, saying, "Hey look! Shiny new product! Cool stuff over here!", while they pick your pocket and hit on your sister while your distracted. Well, in this case it's the typical old Apple: wanting to change you with their product while at the same time not letting you change anything about the product. After all, it's theirs. They made it and you're just borrowing it from them.

Way to take the fun out of it

Though I do agree with the cracked apps part.

Using the March 6th 2008 Event as a guide, I guess that Schiller and Forstall will do the heavy lifting.
They'll demo what's coming in 3.0 with the new SDK features, and announce that it'll be available in June.

If 3.0 doesn't have the option to turn off the triple alert on text messages, I'm going to punch Steve Jobs in the face.

Classy. Threaten to punch a seriously ill man in the face for something that he has little or nothing to do with.

Revisions to the OS aren't firmware upgrades. But I don't want to get into this fight, either. ;)

Damn, I was getting ready to argue but I think you're probably right that it's an OS and not a firmware ;)

I still think iPod Touch users should get all the updates for free. That's just my opinion though.

Interesting that Apple would do a preview v. just coming out with an update...

The 3.0 software is not ready yet. This is clear from the fact that developers have had no access to any beta versions of it yet. However, rather than just quietly releasing a beta of it to developers and letting them spill all of the secrets, they are doing an official event (which is still probably aimed mostly at developers, at least officially) so that they can control the hype machine for it. Developers will get some useful info (and probably a beta SDK shortly after), and the general public can get excited about the potential new features coming at a later date. Pretty much the same deal as last year.

I think the point could be argued either way, to be honest. This is more of an accounting rule than a technological decision. But, yeah, I generally think that if you've made an investment in technology, you should be entitled to software updates that are supported by the device.

Then again, I expect to pay Apple for Snow Leopard... Anyway - yes, it could be argued either way.

All I have to say is, "But still! Come on!?!"

Yup. ;)

What I love most is when friend sends an MMS messge from their $40 phone and then when I see them ask if I got it.

remind me again why we can't get MMS as a standard feature on the iphone? Is it because one day in the future something will replace email, MMS, and texting?

MMS and SMS are both antiquated technologies that need to be replaced. Carriers are charging ridiculous prices for both considering the actual cost of data transfer. There is no reason both of them couldn't be replaced (at least on the back-end) by regular e-mail that would be included in your basic $20-30/month wireless Internet package.

You don't have MMS on your iPhone for the same reason copy and paste hasn't been added. It's not a priority. Whether Apple shares my viewpoint that MMS is outdated, I don't know. MMS is basically just an add-on to the SMS spec. The underlying technology hasn't been updated since 2000.

Personally, I hope Apple sticks to their guns and pushes e-mail as replacement for MMS forward. It would be better for consumers in the long-run.

There's hope that a few years from now, these $40 phones that our friends and family are using will include full featured e-mail and web clients that make MMS a non-issue.

Then Apple can tackle SMS.

All I know is that push notification ain't happening, but I don't know if multitask can be supported on older iPhones, if the rumor is true.... ;)

==========================================
The big thing: MULTITASKING IS COMING TO THE IPHONE 3.0
==========================================

Multitasking is coming to the iPhone according to a member who is now part of the iPhone 3.0 group (Enterprise group).

According to the info received, the reason Apple was threatening to sue Palm was because the "home" button is being re-appropriated to show you your multiple apps. Much like the Pre's card system, an iPhone user will be able to press the Home button once, see all open apps and then quit the other apps using some kind of hand gesture, possibly the 'throwing of the cards' type thing.

This is a serious issue that will deflate some of the excitement in Pre's new WebOS, but more importantly, it will be the throwing down of the gauntlet for Apple. They will protect their IP and the multitasking approach that Pre displayed will be a big point of contention in the courtroom, should Apple seek to block Palm's webOS multitasking feature from making it to the Pre.

You heard it first on BGR.

Where is the link to this?

I'm hoping for support for more Bluetooth profiles (AD2P, tethering, keyboard), but I'm not really expecting it to happen. From what I've gathered, this should be possible through firmware.

Voice dialing is something I was surprised they haven't added yet. Now that they have Voiceover on the iPod shuffle, there is no excuse for not having this.

They really need to make the SMS app not suck. It needs landscape mode and tons of other improvements. MMS isn't really high on my list anymore, I stopped missing it a long time ago. Maybe push notifications will make SMS obsolete, though, and that could be the reasoning for not putting any effort into improving the SMS app.

If push notifications don't arrive, or at least some reasonable substitute (e.g. backgrounding, or background polling), there's going to be a lot of disappointment and jumping ship, especially since its something they've already said they are adding. I know I will be looking to switch to a different platform if this doesn't occur, although I'm already hoping that a good enough handset arrives for Android so I can move to a more open platform.

Copy/paste would be nice, but it wouldn't shock me at all if it didn't arrive. The only thing I'm really expecting for 3.0 is push notifications or something equivalent.
