Stop complaining

To everyone that can't miss an opportunity to whine and moan about all the "misgivings" of the iphone (and Mac OS X in general), I think you'd be better suited going back to another phone or Windows environment. The reason chose Apple is because of their ingenuity and although they are not perfect, they do innovate.

The constant crying poor about minor functionality is pathetic. I think you're missing an opportunity to complain and would be much more comfortable with Windows as this would suit you much better and give you a lot more choices to moan about.

I think this will be all about Business.

As in, functions that are useful to business people, and support for things like device level encryption required by many businesses.

By enabling it to compete more thoroughly in the corporate world, they can continue pressure on RIMM and WinMo.

New UI, please

I could use an alternate home screen viewing option to accommodate all the apps I have now .. a list view like you get in the App Store would be a start.

No, it's pretty much you over-expect. You guys--and you know who you are-- want the latest unreleased chipset operating at the highest possible clock speeds, with a thought-control UI and an antigravity case with a cloaking device and petabyte storage, all for less than you pay for a weeks worth of grande latte.

I'm convinced that nothing less will make you people happy.

Or, maybe just features that Apple promised 6 months ago, like push notifications.

But hey, nice false straw man you made there, made to delegitimize and mock and valid comment towards Apple under-delivering. You dont make any points by twisting facts into hyperbolic statements. But hey, Whatever gets you off.

Unfortunately I believe this going to disappoint a lot of people when 3.0 is completely incompatible with iPhone 2 or 3g.

Few seem to be considering the idea that the new 3.0 OS could very well be something shared between the new iPhone and new 10" product. A significant, substantial upgrade that takes a huge leap forward for features, functionality and UI.

THAT would be exciting.

Mark my words. It will DEFINITELY be compatible with first gen iPhones and 3G. Otherwise, there will be a LOT of ANGRY users on Apple's hands and I don't think they want that type of negative attention.

GPS features/improvements anyone? Remember iPhoto and SL announcements about GPS?

p.s. My iPhone's longitude and latitude are miles off so I'm hoping that Apple can fix this with either a new phone or this new OS.

I have a feeling that we're not going to see the addition of multitasking of any app we want, based on how limited the hardware is NOW with regards to RAM.

If new hardware is delivered in June or whenever, and has more RAM and a faster processor, it's going to get complicated. Eventually they won't be able to have the same software Rev on all iPhones from Gen 1 to Gen X. The newer hardware is going to need its own set of rules to allow it to do things the older phones won't be able to do.

Right?

Oh, do shut up. How crappy every single product would be if all consumers were like you, mindlessly spitting on anyone who dares express constructive criticism about product, in the hopes of having said product improved and enhanced.

Your mentality almost makes me embarrassed to call myself an apple fan (which I am). What do you want everyone to say in these forums, only thank and grovel to Apple, praising their divinity? It certainly sounds like it.

The most ironic thing is that this is a thread specifically about what may potentially be in 3.0, and you as well as others seem irritated that people are actually expressing what they'd like to see. The *horror*

Who the heck would rate this article negative? Are there really people who read this site that are against innovation? Strange.
Hmm. You know, maybe I'm crazy. Now that I think about it, a new iPhone operating system would be terrible. I hope it never happens.

It is a Preview… NOt the release of the 2009 iPhone.

By the time 3.0 finally gets released your birthday money will have been long spent. Besides, iPhone OS upgrades are free.
;)

I know that but I got a feeling they will have a hardware upgrade soon so I'll be putting it aside till it comes out...

Oh dear, oh my oh goodness me, a piece of technology that wasn't delivered on time. The world is going to hell. Why don't you send your expertise brain-waves their way and make it happen then? Sometimes things are easier said than done, and apparently PUSH is proving to be so. Get your panties out of a knot and just be happy with what you DO have. Unless, of course, you've never, ever broken a promise, then you can be mad.

The more I surf these forums the more I realize how pathetic consumers are.

Apple isn't going to want to support the first iPhone forever. 3.0 may in fact be compatible, but I bet that won't last long. What will be interesting is how they handle applications. People aren't going to want to rebuy applications (outside of a few) every couple of years.

I'm guessing they will support their phones for the life of the two year contract. The last first gen phones were sold in June or July of last year. I'm guessing 3.0 will support 1st gen phones but 4.0 won't as it will have been over two years since the last one was sold. Just my two cents.

I have something I want to add.

The 3.0 software has to be backwards compatible. Here are my thoughts:

Apple and it's Developers are going to want to sell applications to as many users as possible. Why would Apple put a restriction on which iPhone OS runs on which iPhone model? Are the developers then supposed to make 2 separate apps... one that is iPhone 2.x compatible and one that is iPhone 3.x compatible just to make sure their Apple is sellable to anyone? From a buisness point of view, I don't think Apple wants to make it that complicated. There should be one iPhone OS that runs on all iPhones. I don't think they really want to start alienating iPhone 3G owners. Besides, if you DO need new hardware to run the new OS, why would Apple demonstrate the new OS months before the new hardware and get us all excited and then say... Oh, sorry... you have to buy our new iPhone to get the new software features. iPhone 3G users are still paying AT&T and Apple, so we should be treated fairly.

Why should they? I mean, honestly, I don't get it.

This event seems to be about a preview, and 3.0 will be delivered somewhere in the May/June timeframe. And guess what:

There are some millions of first gen iPhones out there, that will just meet the timeframe for a new mobile contract (therefore new subsidised handset).

Why should they support the first gen iPhone, when their main goal will be to direct people to buying the third generation iPhone, that is bound to happen this year!

How about a weather icon that dynamically shows the weather. I'm not joking I'd like that.

I hope that if multi-tasking comes into play it is done well. When watching the pre video I thought it was annoying that at the end the user is closing down like 5 apps. I don't want to even think about closing down apps let alone 5 every time i stop using my phone. That was one thing about win-mo that was iffy. Even if you let the OS pre-empt just the temptation to close an app triggers my neat freak and I feel compelled to close every open app.

I'm 90% sure whatever they do will support the 1st iPhone. Many many times it has been said the iphone is a platform. There may be new hardware dependent features (like the GPS in the 3G, so maybe a front camera). I still love my 1st gen iphone. I don't hold onto it to avoid contracts, I hold into it for the stinking metal back! I love my metal back. I could be persuaded to part with it for maybe 32gig in storage space? "maybe" ;)

I'm happy to send via email, but I would not mind being able to receive MMS. Might be cool for some MMS to email translation gateway on the server side.

I suspect we will see Push notifications and maybe some voice options with GPS or even like on the new shuffle.

The final thing I expect to see is some kind of lock screen customization with more detail for unread email or such.

all of you who are saying that multi-tasking is hard to do because of the lack of memory, are you sure about it, because as far as I know (But I may be wrong) most other phones have less RAM than the iphone. I was able to keep apps open with my Nokia 6260 and switch between them, it's weird the iPhone can't at least handle 3 or 2 apps at a time. Maybe they should try to lower the RAM usage of the OS.
If I could surf + IM at the same time it would be awesome. If I could surf+IM+listen to music then it would be :apple:!

I think you're right. To understand this better, it helps to get into this mindframe: think less of a telephone and more of a mobile computing platform that happens to make telephone calls.

People here say some of the most ridiculous things. Why would this new OS lock out the 2G iPhone? Especially with people bound to cellular contract on a device that had no subsidy. Seems a bit of a stretch.

For the camp that claim the 2G iPhone will be unsupported but the 3G will, there really isn't much difference in the devices with the exception of the 3G chip and GPS. Well actually the 3G feels much cheaper that the original 2G iPhone.

Also I really doubt you will get video recording on the older iPhone. It's going to be a feature that gets you to upgrade to a new phone.

LOL @ the guy that posted how he hopes 3.0 software breaks all the unlocks and "prevents competing app stores" if that doesn't sound like a monopoly I don't know.

This is predictable...they will preview the new firmware and then slowly they will remove promised features after that. then, 3.0 will launch with the new iPhone in June :p

I definately think that the calendar icon should change depending on the day like in leopard. That would be very useful
