Actually, that indicates it IS truly random. After the iPod plays a song, it could potentially choose ANY song in your library to play next, including the one it just played.

If it only played each song in your library once in a random order, that wouldn't really be random. :)

There have been reports that Apple changed their "shuffle" algorithms to work in a way that is actually less random, but appears more random to human beings.

Interesting that Apple would do a preview v. just coming out with an update...

Why? It's no different than going from 10.5.5 to 10.5.6 or other major upgrade. Companies always preview their future major updates. I think it would be weird if Apple didn't hawk it's latest OS.

Also, as all Apple Events are, this is more than just giving geeks a preview of the next iPhone OS. It's a shot aimed at killing the Pre DOA even before it's launched, and to get the media PR machine geared up for the next iPhone launch season. Apple loves to draw out the generational iPhone launches.

I suspect it'll go like this. S/W preview Monday, new iPhone preview in late May/early June, launch a few weeks later. I'd also be surprised if 3.0 was compatible with the iPhone 2G. Chalk it up to Apple's program of planned obsolescence.

I think I will be pretty pissed if they decide to announce a new iPhone. I just got this one month or two ago and I really don't want to buy another one. I just want a kick ass software update and keep my current phone!

And I'll be pretty pissed if they don't release a new iPhone. I got this one almost two years ago and I really want to buy something newer than the same phone with a different radio.

Stalemate. ;)

No, it's an accounting issue. Apple has to charge for major software revisions for the iPod Touch (they charged for 1.x to 2.0), but the OS update is factored into the accounting practices for the iPhone, so all iPhone OS updates are free.

*sigh*

I don't want to get into a fight but I can't let it slip. I'd like to point you to all the other companies that release major firmware revisions for free such as Sony and Nokia.

It's just Apple making easy money.

If you listen to the earnings call you would know that fishkorp was correct. iPhone users will get a free upgrade, but iPod users will probably have to pay $9.99. I'm sure Apple doesn't mind the 10 bucks, but they aren't making any sort of killing on it and are doing it for legal / accounting reasons.

First off, no reason to be pissed. You will get a free software update and a lot more features. You won't have everything the latest and greatest phone has, but it's your choice to upgrade or not.

Second, did you not think they would release a new iPhone in June / July like they have for the last 2 years?

New iPhone 3.0 features

Mandatory upgrade or else your iPhone will not get a signal.
Breaks all jailbreaking techniques.
Breaks the future 2.2.1 Yell0w Sn0w update.
No longer able to crack apps.
New clock icon.

That would be awesome.

Pretty sure my unlocked 2G will continue to get signal from T-Mobile USA :D Unless of course they have a backdoor in 2.2.1 that no one is aware of.

I will look forward to the new clock icon on my stock 3G on AT&T, however :)

For your information, iPhone users have never paid for a version upgrade ever.
Really? So what was that $9.95 people paid for a couple of months ago? I might have been wrong, meaning that only touch users would have to pay for it (I remember reading about it, but I'm not sure right now anymore).

Voice dialing is something I was surprised they haven't added yet. Now that they have Voiceover on the iPod shuffle, there is no excuse for not having this.

I don't see what one has to do with the other. Voice dial allows machines to understand people whereas Voiceover is rather "dumb" and just speaks text embedded in the metadata. Now if you could talk into the shuffle to request a song or playlist I'd see your point, but as you stated it I don't.

That said, the Samsung phone I owned back in 2000 had voice dial so it's not like it's high-tech anymore. It should be on the "best phone ever."

Your thinking iPod Touch not iPhone.

iPhone users have never paid.

We pay monthly

I'm hoping for a new interface. I especially like the graphite interface of iStat for iPhone:

Or even better... a MobileMe interface for the entire iPhone.

Oops, it was the OS update which was available for the iPod Touch from iTunes - I just remembered to have payed 9.95 for something but couldn't remember what it was, not until I checked it. Sorry for the mixup!

I hope that when Apple releases 3.0 & the new iPhone, it's way better than last year. Here a 2 things I see Apple really needs to do to prevent another catastrophe:

1) Increase the capacity of the servers (either add more servers, make them more efficient, I don't exactly know). So many people complained about how things were backed up.

2) Stagger the new iPhone & 3.0 of the OS for the older by at least a week. That way, people trying to activate the new iPhone won't interfere as much w/ the people upgrading their older iPhones.

So basically, increase supply & decrease the demand for the servers. Things will go a lot more smoothly if Apple did that, and may get more people to buy iPhones. This'll be especially bad since this'll be when the contracts of the 1st iPhone customers expire.

Unfortunately I believe this going to disappoint a lot of people when 3.0 is completely incompatible with iPhone 2 or 3g.

Few seem to be considering the idea that the new 3.0 OS could very well be something shared between the new iPhone and new 10" product. A significant, substantial upgrade that takes a huge leap forward for features, functionality and UI.

THAT would be exciting.

I wouldn't be surprised if iPhone OS 3.0 is incompatible with the first generation iPhone, it definitely won't be incompatible with the iPhone 3G. I don't think Apple would make that mistake. I'm sure some features from 3.0 won't be on the iPhone but I think the OS will be compatible with the iPhone 3G.

While I have no doubt 3.0 will incompatible with the 2G I think it's stretch to say it won't be compatible with the 3G. That would alienate far, far too many customers AND potential customers. Keep in mind that iPhone 3G sales are many multiples larger than iPhone 2G sales.

I also don't think 3.0 has anything to do with the 10" screen. For one, a 10" phone is ludicrous. And if it's not a phone then it's not going to have an OS called "iPhone 3.0."

Apple isn't going to want to support the first iPhone forever. 3.0 may in fact be compatible, but I bet that won't last long. What will be interesting is how they handle applications. People aren't going to want to rebuy applications (outside of a few) every couple of years.
