there will be features in 3.0 that wont work on the first version iPhone simply because its the first version. There is nothing wrong with that and it is to be expected. and plus those who bought 1st generation have their contracts expiring soon...perfect time for the new iphone coming out in July.

Resolution independence is an absolute must!

This will pave the way for iPhone Apps to be used on the rumored tablet, future iPhones with higher resolutions, and ultimately AppleTV.

I'm hoping for a virtual friends feature. I don't use my 3G enough to justify the monthly cell bill. Would be nice if the phone actually called me once in a while. ;)

Copy & paste? Video recording? Picture msgs?

...or just stability improvements?

I'd go with this. I'd like them to take a similar approach to Snow Leopard and just improve the overall performance. Waiting up to 10 seconds for the camera to be ready is just plain unacceptable, and renders is almost unusable for me. Same thing when opening SMS, it takes way too long to load. The keyboard responsiveness is frustrating at times too. Video recording is essential, as is picture messaging. There's no reason not to have them.

I have a 2G (AT&T contracted, 3rd one due to faults with the others) and have it all up to date, but unlocked so I could travel back to the UK and use a SIM there, and have used cycorder for video which works great. Why this can't be a native app is beyond me. But most of all, stability and performance improvements please!

I'm most excited that it suggests, following last year's pattern, that we can expect a new iPhone and OS 3.0 in June... exactly what I've been waiting for! My honest LG GSM phone is waiting to retire.

Now grab your spice weasel and Bam! Crank it up a notch!

I definately think that the calendar icon should change depending on the day like in leopard. That would be very useful

It does that now... look again.. unless you are still stuck with pre 2.0 software..

pal :)

Oh dear, oh my oh goodness me, a piece of technology that wasn't delivered on time. The world is going to hell. Why don't you send your expertise brain-waves their way and make it happen then? Sometimes things are easier said than done, and apparently PUSH is proving to be so. Get your panties out of a knot and just be happy with what you DO have. Unless, of course, you've never, ever broken a promise, then you can be mad.

The more I surf these forums the more I realize how pathetic consumers are.

Well said, the majority of consumers don't think like this, it just people who post here and feel their needs should equate everyone else's.

Mark my words. It will DEFINITELY be compatible with first gen iPhones and 3G. Otherwise, there will be a LOT of ANGRY users on Apple's hands and I don't think they want that type of negative attention.

I agree, approx 13+ million angry customers, many stuck in 2 year contracts. It would be very bad business to do this. When Apple changed to Intel, they made sure every subsequent software release would be compatible with PPCs. So far, they have kept this word.

I look forward to being let down by not getting any of this as well.

Hooray!

In reality, this is probably the most appropriate attitude to have.

My wish list..

Landscape email and quick switching b/w accounts
Video recording
Voice dial
Cut Copy Paste of course
multitasking
More Bluetooth profiles
Probably the most important of all... Responsive.

If you haven't noticed, none of those are revolutionary... just basic stuff that I think they should have included since the beginning.

pal :)

I think that streak will end sometime later this year. And the mobile computing/cellphone development time-line moves much faster than the computer line. At some point, the first iPhones won't cut it. Anyone's guess as to when that will be -- and probably not with version 3 of the OS.

If they're going to make 3.0 compatible with the iPhone 3G, then it should run fine on the first gen because the hardware is pretty much the same as far as processor speed and memory goes.

I agree, it seems to be the norm. Remember how excited people were before 2.0 hit? Dreaming of MMS and Copy and Paste. We got Apps, and not much more than that. People were kinda bummed, but at least we can download 3rd party apps now. My iPhone can fart 1,001 ways now!

Here is my wishlist:
Copy and Paste
720p Video Recording*
...

*Probably available only on future hardware though

720p video recording? Yeah, I'd say that would only be available on future hardware... much further into the future, with that.

I'm excited for another giant let-down! WOOHOO!

Apple: Over-promise, under-deliver!

I'm no Apple apologist, but I can honestly only think of one or two times in Apple's history (well, post-Jobs return) that they over-promised and under-delivered. MobileMe was one and Leopard's so-called secret features were another (although that's debatable because they never really promised any specific features, just teased that there were secret ones that never materialized.)

Can you give me some examples of when they've over-promised and under-delivered? I've long admired that about Apple, that they don't generally unveil things until they're ready to be released which means not a lot of features promised beforehand.

LOL @ the guy that posted how he hopes 3.0 software breaks all the unlocks and "prevents competing app stores" if that doesn't sound like a monopoly I don't know.

It would only be a monopoly if it also broke every other phone on the planet and only the iPhone could be used. All companies have control over their products.

Copy + Paste, Push, and a way to do remote wipe without an Exchange server!

If 3.0 is more stable and reliable, I'll buy a new iPhone (still on an original 8GB). If not, I'm ditching the one I have now for a BlackBerry!

Just a preview on the 17th. To be honest I wish Apple would wait until the actual release of the firmware to reveal all of the secrets of what's to come. This is unlike Apple.

No. It isn't unlike Apple. V2.0 was previewed long before its release. Indeed the entire iPhone was previewed before its release. Has Apple not also been previewing OS X Snow Leopard too? As well as many past incarnations of OS X.
Apple isn't doing anything unusual with this preview.

Besides, it needs to be previewed when theres hundred, nay thousands of people developing for the platform. Developers need to know whats going on, for obvious reasons.
