Who are these negative people?

I'm always wondering who rates potentially really good news with a negative click. 44 on the negative count regarding a 3.0 update. It should be like 0, for I assume no one thinks the current version is perfect.

New iPhone 3.0 features

Mandatory upgrade or else your iPhone will not get a signal.
Breaks all jailbreaking techniques.
Breaks the future 2.2.1 Yell0w Sn0w update.
No longer able to crack apps.
New clock icon.

That would be awesome.

I liked this post.

Everyone else was asking for ludicrous things, hoping the new iPhone will be instant sex... this is probably one of the most realistic list of expectations to be posted in the past 600 whatever.

Personally I would like to see Apple letting approved apps add an auto data sync so your up to date with your Mac based app every time you sync. I use Bento to maintain medication and health information and it's a pain to update the iPhone using ASV touch via me.com.

I can see this feature as being helpful in getting Mac app developers to more tightly join the Mac & iPhone/touch.

Speaking of Bento, this is one app that should have a Bento demo on all new Macs sold and very tight syncing with the iPhone/touch simply because Apple owns FileMaker.

I've seen so many products stir a massive amount of interest in the geek sphere (yes, I'm looking at you Android G1) and not even make the slightest blip on the consumer radar (still looking at you Android G1.) That explains why the G1 had massive initial sales and then fell off rapidly.

fwiw, I actually work in an ER serving a very-low income/medicaid inner-city population and I see MANY G1s. It seems everyone and their mother has one - and this is in an area where T-Mobile hasn't even rolled out the 3G yet. I observed this because people have nothing better to do in an ER besides wait and talk/play on their phones. Interestingly, I have only seen a few iPhones here and there. I do find it strange seeing a patient on medicaid pull out their iPhone.

I live that post too, but it's missing a critical line.

The enthusiastic statement: "And boy did we patent it!"

The question is this july i be only a year into my 2 year contract will the 3.0 software update be available for the iphone 3g and will it be free?

I hope that apple will make this software update available for the current iphone 3g, like when 2.0 was made available for the 1st gen model.

i can't be bothered to buy a phone every year i can stick it out for 2 years and than upgrade my handset when iam ready?

any clues if 3.0 will be only released for the next gen iphone or will it be made available for everyone even the 1st gen iphone.

Scaling for iPod Touch-like Tablet?

Okay, I finally decided to stop being a voyeur and join a discussion (this is my first ever post). I haven't read the entire thread, but I'm curious if anyone thinks there might be some synergy between the release of this OS and the rumors around the 'netbook'/ touch-screen tablet? My hope is that Apple has figured out a way to scale iPhone apps for use with the tablet which presumably would run this new OS. Maybe I'm dreaming here but this would be cool.

Please Apple:

-Copy Paste
-Video recording & iChat
-MMS
-Push
-BlueTooth A2DP

You nailed it, although there are a few more things I would add:

- Bluetooth MUST allow voice dialing. I still can't believe you can't do this on the iPhone. Welcome to 2004, Apple...
- Nike+ built in a-la the iPT
- Flash

While all these things would be nice, MMS and VA-dialing would push me over the edge to buy iphones for my wife and I. Until then, I'll stick with Verizon.

Yeah I can't wait. I bet it will add better functionality to safari, break all jailbreaks, and offer bug fixes. I can't see anything else - knowing apple. HA!

o_O Wow it's my birthday too! And St. Patricks day of course^^
I hope they don't make the iPod Touch 1G completey obsolete with this update..

I think there is a lot of fear for nothing about these devices being "obsolete" already. These OS/firmware versions aren't exactly the complicated software that the OS X iterations are. The hardware also isn't jumping at the rate that computer hardware does, namely the CPU and RAM are pretty much the same as they were in the first iPhone on day one.

iPod touch 1G users will probably have to pay another $10 for the upgrade, but it should still be available. iPhone users should get it for free because of all the money we give AT&T monthly.

yes!

needs:
MMS and SMS in one app
Copy and Paste in a simple way

wants: dual processing chip support for future designs
new looks maybe themes? but o god :apple: would never do changeable themes... but steve jobs is gone...
performance or footprint reduction would be nice
backwards compatible to old phones

I'm looking for
1. 3G tethering
2. copy and paste
3. multi tasking (although it might be kinda limited on current model)
4. turn by turn navigation
5. more input method for asia languages especially chinese
6. better apple apps (mail/sms/safari....)

I've noticed how you're opposed to jailbreaking, and I respect that, but why would all that matter to you? If you don't want to jailbreak, then you don't, and thats it. I don't see why others not being able to use their iPhones how they want would be awesome to you.

Evil, evil Spaz. :(

Hmm... I wonder what this will have.
Just somethings to throw out:
1) OS customization (actual background, five icon dock, etc); it seems unlikely but you never know if they change the SDK.
2) Copy/Paste
3) New Safari to make look somewhat similar to Safari 4.
4) Better battery life?
5) Faster OS.
6) ???
And somethings that should have already been here...
6) Push for 3rd party apps and all email.
7) 3rd party apps able to run in background.
8) ???

I bet that if they do preview it, they will not show everything that's new but some of the main really important features.

My wish list:

- Copy/Paste
- Tethering
- Terminal with SSH (to connect to my Slicehost slice)

Give me that, and I will never jailbreak this thing again.

Yeah! It's pretty stressing giving us a preview 3 months before release but hey, at least we know its coming:p

It would be nice to solicit beta testers. I'm sure every owner would be up for that. March 17th means only 3 months till release, how bad can it be at this point? Many releases have seemed like beta products.
