3.0 will determine if i stick with my BB or go to the iPhone

Same here! I have a feeling that the biggest feature will just be push services. But then again the latest software build is at 2.2.1, so we could be looking at some mighty big features!

I 'd be cool with icon groups for apps. (like games, social, photo, etc.) would neaten up pages a bit when adding new apps.

Apple needs to add in basic basic smartphone functionality (most of which you can get through Cydia, but they should be made native):

- unified email inbox
- statusbar icons for new mail, texts, voicemail, etc.
- configurable notifications (customizable text and email sounds, configurable combinations of sounds, configurable repeat notifications, configurable vibration settings - basically take a page out of RIM's book)
- unified email inbox
- completely overhauled SMS app, with basic options like individual deleting and forwarding

Apple seems to miss the fact that a lot of people actually use their iPhone as a PHONE - and it's not much good as a phone when you can't do things your free Motorola did 8 years ago.

I think we will see the following:

- A new-ish GUI - Like the UI when you went from Tiger to Leopard

- OpenCL - That will improve performance ...

- Copy & Past between native apps and 3:rd part app developer .
This will need to have some modifications to current apps but it will not be a huge amount of work for developers ..

- Push-Notifications ... bether late then never ...

- SMS Forwarding

- MMS (highly doubt it but it is possible)

Tought the current iphone is rather much the same as the original one except gsp and 3g ..
the hardware remains much the same ..
This 3Q Apple will possible release a new iphone that will take advantages of the iphone 3.0 software ..
and if so we then have possibilites like a FrontSide Camera for Video chat ..

and if Video Chat comes to iphone be shore that iChat will be released for Windows ...
iTunes/QuickTime vs MediaPlayer, Safari vs IE ... MSN vs .... iChat ofcourse ...

But the first and sec gen iphone will possibly have ichat with video watching instead
of watching/broadcasting (that would need a front side camera)

and why not "Grand Central"-ish on the iphone OS (if the new iphone will have multi-core)

but the one feature for games that is already on the iphone would be officialy support..
is TV-Out on App Store Games for all iphone models and ofcourse a keynote app with TV-OUT ...

That what I think ...

Yeah right. You can't make everyone happy no matter what they add to the iPhone. They could add EVERYTHING that EVERYBODY wants, and then there would be people complaining that the iPhone does TOO much.

ROFL. I don't think any product can be said to do "too much". There is always something that is missing

I would love updated Google maps, the pics are from 02-03 where I live.

That's up to Google, not Apple. Also, they don't need a new firmware update to do that anyways because maps are not stored on the iPhone.

I want to be able to disable spell-checking! That, and push notifications, and I'm in. (To pay, that is, since I only got an iPod touch...)

New Feature

My guess ... most of this will center around the OS now supporting higher resolution 10" displays and a demo of the new rumored device.

Of course on a device like that it will also need new features like copy/paste, background apps etc.

Wishlist 3.0

-Updated GUI
-Copy/Paste
-TextExpander(ish) element
.... I just don't know

I'd actually be the most excited for a GUI update. I hope they do something to make the PRE look like Pre-school.

So no event on the 24th? Or will there be two events, one right after the other (unlikely)?

Hopefully we'll see how this OS will work with the rumored mini-tablet.

The reason for a preview

I believe the reason for this preview is to ask developers to allow for varying screen sizes, and to give them an SDK ASAP with support for the things they are demonstrating, so by the time a round of new hardware comes out, the App Store will already be full of apps that support it well.

The SDK already has very good support for varying screen sizes, though the apps themselves will surely need tweaking to handle it perfectly - I know mine will need a little! I expect there will more additions and system calls for that and much more, like maybe frameworks for push, video recording and pasteboards and the like.

Awesome! Although its not coming out the 17th

"Apparently, we'll get a sneak peak at the new OS, as well as a look at a brand new version of the SDK.". Great news nonetheless!

Even better, March 17 is my birthday :D

Same here!

Unfortunatly being half irish means i am not allowed to remember anything about that date.

Hmmmm.... there may be a possibility that the full version of the OS may be released at WWDC? Surely, Apple could have waited to give a 'preview' at WWDC but they may be plan on distributing it then?

If they show the 10" device, I will wet my pants, jump up and down...

then I'll look at my bank account and wish I could afford it.

Then I'll buy it anyway.

1 day later I will feel horrible I bought it

2 weeks later I will love it so much that I'll hold onto it for years and years.

By FAR the biggest software O/S thing that the iPhone needs is some type of FILE SYSTEM that's accessible by the user directly and not controlled and invisible like it is now.

I want to store ANY file on my iPhone, and have that transfer process controlled from within iTunes and not wirelessly. I want to see my files in the iPhone via a normal directory structure, and MOST IMPORTANTLY allow for apps to ACCESS those files so they can use and save in the common file areas. This is normal O/S functionality that Windows Mobile since inception has but the iPhone does not.

Apple would be insane not to have a major hardware revision available for purchase the day 1st gen iPhone owners' 2-year contracts are expiring. Throw some cold water on Palm's Pre, Apple.

I'm holding on to my 1st gen model until there's new hardware to be had.

Absolutely. I'm sure the next gen of iPhone will be out just in time for that! :D

As for features of 3.0? They should really get a better versioning system. We're only on 2.2 now!! I would expect 3.0 to be a reworking of the OS much as the jump from 1.x to 2.x. Also, the fact that this has to do with the SDK as well means there is something major coming up. This, I'm expecting, is going to be beyond the addition of another app, be it MMS, Video recording, landscape for Mail or even Push (as it has been included in the SDK before).

The most likely thing I've heard so far is the inclusion of background processes. It would be something requiring a core OS change as well as a change in the SDK.

Personally, asides from what ever direction they are going, I think they should take a look at all the features Cydia has provided JB users and learn that people want some of this stuff so bad they are hacking their phones for it... Apple should just install it themselves. Cut and Paste (if you can do it Simple enough), Video Recording, MMS, Landscape email/SMS, Replies from inside apps, Background processes, Notifications in the Status bar. Basic things that most people install when they Jailbreak would be nice to have for everyone so they don't have to. Best way to prevent people from Jailbreaking would be to give them no reason to want to. :D
