This is unlike Apple to show a preview of firmware before a release. I'm used to having to wait.

They did this last year. In fact, literally a year ago in March. They showed the SDK and explained/demonstrated the App Store on 2.0 way before it was released.

I really hope Copy & Paste is not included.

I tells ya if copy & paste isn't included this time geeks all over will be rioting in the streets overturning cars and setting fire to storefronts.

It will be the apple fanboy version of the rodney king riots. For realz!

By FAR the biggest software O/S thing that the iPhone needs is some type of FILE SYSTEM that's accessible by the user directly and not controlled and invisible like it is now.

I want to store ANY file on my iPhone, and have that transfer process controlled from within iTunes and not wirelessly. I want to see my files in the iPhone via a normal directory structure, and MOST IMPORTANTLY allow for apps to ACCESS those files so they can use and save in the common file areas. This is normal O/S functionality that Windows Mobile since inception has but the iPhone does not.

Tony

Agreed. I'd love preview to view/edit my PDF/ebooks on my iPhone.

It might sound dumb, but that is life changing to me.

What will they add to the SDK? More abilities such as Push given to devs or a complete re-working of the SDK?

Improved Camera

Maybe I'm just a simple guy, but while I'd welcome the software improvements mentioned thus far in the thread (copy & paste, MMS, background notifications, video recording, etc.) I'm much more interested personally in new hardware. I'd like:

-an improved camera (at least 3.2MP) preferably with a flash
-HD screen
-802.11N

That's just me though :)

I know we won't likely hear about any hardware improvements on the 17th, but come June, I'd reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeally like a great excuse to upgrade my 1st gen 8GB...

TM

If they did that with the camera I would get one. I don't have one now, been using a cheap pre-pay phone for years. The addition of a cool camera (quality) with flash would be enough for me to justify the monthly cost increase over my current phone.

Just a preview on the 17th. To be honest I wish Apple would wait until the actual release of the firmware to reveal all of the secrets of what's to come. This is unlike Apple.

Actually it's just like the desktop.

and it will decide for me if i stick with my iphone get rid of it for a nokia n810 and some cheap phone combo. i want push and real apps or im gone.

20000 not enough for you?

I think there's a decent chance something like that will show up. There are now so many different apps, each with their own little file store and corresponding transfer method. There's no point for Apple to require each app to have its own 'island'.

Whats most possible .. a netbook-ish device with iphone os 3.0 on it or a iphone with a higher display resolution (higher PPI) like iPhone HD ??

imo i think iPhone have more then enough Pixel Per Inch for a mobile device ..

i wish there will be normal sms functions such as forwarding and copy & paste... not forgetting mms function too...

Somebody explain what 3.0 would or could do for the iphone.

Copy and Paste.
Also multi-media messaging, synchronizing of Notes, iCal, Address Book, Mail between the phone and your computer.
Recording video.
Turn by turn voice guided sat nav.
3rd party apps don't have to be approved by Apple anymore.

:D:D:D:D

Right.

20000 not enough for you?

My reaction too. Except they are up to 27,000 apps or so.

Some people are never satisfied, apple, just keep doing what you are doing, there is always a palm pre for the never-satisfieds....

Couldn't agree more

Think about this, when the iPhone came out 2 years ago it was years ahead of the competition. It was missing things like:

-Video recording
-Voice Dialing
-MMS
-Copy and paste
-Background applications*
-GPS turn by turn
-A Push notification System of sorts*

These things, expect for the ones marked with a *, are sort of trivial as something that a regular software update can take care of.

These features should be a given in the new iPhone OS. It is already there, or just coming, from the competition. The real question is, does Apple have something else to move the bar a little higher? I certainly hope so, if not, it would look like they are playing catch-up.

BTW, this is not some sort of unrealistic expectations just to have something to complain about later. The fact that the iPhone currently lacks these features doesn't make them innovative, ground breaking or mind blowing. It is just what it is. I can tell you before the announcement next week, if only these features are announced, it would be ok news, thats it. If they don't even announce these, it would be a let down. Just my personal opinion.

While push and copy-paste are probably coming, I think this will be about a lot more than that. Those features are important but if it was just that it could have come in a regular update, not 3.0.

I think they will debut a re-worked interface that will one-up the Prie, and introduce better app management. The existing OS GUI came about when people only had the default apps on their devices (at least non-jailbroken units.)

Cool! I hope it supports 1st generation iPod touches :fingers crossed:
I wonder if they'll update the UI... I doubt it....
To-do, notes syncing? iDisk support? More widgets by default (Converter, Translator, Ski report, Nike+, Movies, Dictionary, Flight tracker)?

Ams.

They have to give time for developers to learn what's new.

From the way it sounds its going to be a pretty big change so it takes time for developers to learn and make apps for it.

I would expect, video recording, copy & paste, MMS, push notification and changes underneath to makes things faster and smoother.

They did it with Leopard, and those are always fun to watch. :p

Safari has been incredibly stable for me and hasn't crashed once since the latest update. I hope whatever they do doesn't break it. Also, let's hope 3.0 isn't as broken as 2.0 was. I think everyone else covered what they would like. I would be happy with landscape keyboard in all Apple apps.

As a developer, the thing I am hoping for the most is for Apple to provide a way for users to sync files created in apps on the phone with their desktops via iTunes, and to make wherever those files are stored on the desktop easily accessible to the user as well (i.e. not in one gigantic iPhone backup file that you can't really get into).
