By FAR the biggest software O/S thing that the iPhone needs is some type of FILE SYSTEM that's accessible by the user directly and not controlled and invisible like it is now.

I want to store ANY file on my iPhone, and have that transfer process controlled from within iTunes and not wirelessly. I want to see my files in the iPhone via a normal directory structure, and MOST IMPORTANTLY allow for apps to ACCESS those files so they can use and save in the common file areas. This is normal O/S functionality that Windows Mobile since inception has but the iPhone does not.

Tony

I would be surprised if Apple implemented this. They ridiculed Windows Mobile for including a task manager.

Does anyone remember a few months back, apple filed that patent about the new "locked screen"?

If they implement push notifactions, obv there are going to be more notifications, so the "locked screen" would start to get crammped, i.e. with text messages, missed calls, voice messages, IM's etc.

If I remember rightly, the plan was to give the "locked screen" some sort interactivity, so you can select on of the notifications and go straight to that app, i.e. an IM, text etc. obv after unlocking it.

That could be part of the update to the OS, that'd be pretty major and warrant the 3.0 status (along with push).

Just a thought

Also, it seems the "shuffle" part of the iPod function plays some tunes more than others. It's not really random.

I've noticed that too, gets old fast when you've only stuck a couple of gigs of music on it.

So, my big question is is it likely that the iPhone 2G'll be supported? If they finally put in the basics (cut&paste, mms etc etc etc) and drop support . . .

push coming in september, it's only march... ;)

Am I the only 1 that REALLY REALLY wants Nike+ to come to the iPhone. I know it's a hardware thing so it'd have to be a product refresh but come on, I dont want to shell out another $225 for an iPod wen I have bought 3 iPhones already. Anyone with me. . .?

It would be sweet if OS 3.x would allow the user to connect an external keyboard so you could actually use the Mail application for real purposes

The OS 3.0 isn't coming in march, simply previewing - i guess so dev's can implement the new features (like oush).

What are u basing the sept release on anyway? I thought last year was june (2.0) with the new iphone?

MMS I could care less about (I think it'll be phased out in a few years anyway in favor of push email), but cut and paste is a must.

i guess by your logic as long as you've got a lot of something it doesnt matter if they're any good

are you seriously saying there aren't lots of good apps?

Personally I regularly use Currency, Fieldrunners, Solebon, Wordpress, removem and all of them except Wordpress (which is crasholicious) are good.

I cannot wait.

I'm sure we won't get 3.0 until June/Julyish when the new iPhone comes out, but hey, June is 3 months away...thats not long at all.

Just a preview on the 17th. To be honest I wish Apple would wait until the actual release of the firmware to reveal all of the secrets of what's to come. This is unlike Apple.

One reason--to keep prospective customers from locking themselves into other carrier's contract. There are already members here who are willing to switch to the iPhone based on what 3.0 would do.

Apple announced the iPhone well ahead of its debut for this reason also.

Next week's event is about software only--iPhone OS preview, probably OS X 10.6 preview, and other software. I doubt any new hardware will be introduced.

I would expect a new iPhone revision in June, but I have no idea if they'll do anything to it except bump the capacity.

I would think that they will make at least some changes to the hardware, if not major ones... While I feel that the iPhone is still unrivaled, the competition has been getting more and more attractive. IMO, if Apple only bumps the capacity, they risk falling behind.

Besides, I want my AMOLED iPhone... Well, hey, a guy can dream, can't he?

I can almost hear it:

We listen very carefully to our customers and what do they want the most?
1. Push-Notifications (everybody applauses!)
2. Improved Apps (everybody cheers!)
3. Copy/Cut and Paste (everybody screams!)
4. MMS (The audience almost makes itself wet!)

Well, we cover all those features in the new Version 3.0. (5 minues of loud screaming, standing ovations)

but we do it Apple-Style. (the audience freezes)

1. Push: We provide a Server, only costs 1$ per service.
2. Improved Apps: You can now choose, if you want the keyboard on top or on bottom.
3. Copy/Paste: We got something much better: We automatically detect, what you might want to copy and do it for you and send you directly to the website you might want to go. It really works surprisingly well.
4. MMS: We developed a new Protocol: AMMS (Apple-MMS), where you can send MMS via email.

(the audience left the building)

SCNR :p

My guess ... most of this will center around the OS now supporting higher resolution 10" displays and a demo of the new rumored device.

Of course on a device like that it will also need new features like copy/paste, background apps etc.

Last March didn't Apple show more than just the iPhone O/S ? Didn't they also show off the new iPhone 3G ? Am I wrong ?

If I'm right I'm guessing with all this rumormongering about a 10" touch display Apple may surprise us and show this "Tablet" device with it being available in June.

Or they will give us a sneak peek at Snow Leopard. March 17th is about the right time for another dev seed.

iTunes-X

Nope, all we had were rumors (and leaks) about what the iPhone 3G would look like right up until the demo at WWDC in June.

Are the same 3 people posting the same posts over and over again on here? Geeees. Yeah, there are features I want, but pleeeeease remind yourself that the iPhone, even as it is, is a technical marvel that to me makes every other phone out there a joke.

MMS - Yes, this is a given, make it happen

Video Recording - Cycorder looks great, but I fear the problem that apple doesn't like is the slight wavy problem which is a hardware issue with how the camera takes pictures. Sadly, Apple won't settle for a decent video camera, they want a perfect. I'll sacrifice perfect for decent.

Copy/Paste - Outside of Macrumors, I really doubt this is such a big deal. And I swear about 80% of you just complain about it because it's the cool bandwagon to be on

Voice Dialing - Call ATT and scream your head off for that one, ATT charges an extra monthly fee for that feature

Push - Similar to copy/paste, most people could care less

Here's the thing.... I don't think we know what we want, Apple has historically had great foresight to consumer trends and wants that we don't even see at present. I wouldn't expect a media even to announce the supposed 'needs' that people complain about on here, I would expect an announcement similar to the App Store, something that changes the face of Cell Phone uses yet again. The way everyone on here complains just makes me so sick, pull the stick out of your own butt before you try to pull the one out of Apples.

Same as last time or did I miss something?

Like last year, they'll preview 3.0, but it will likely be released in June along side a new iPhone.

Also, anyone think we'll see the new iPhone (what will it be called? iPhone3?) before WWDC. Maybe May?

Everyone keeps calling it the 4G which pisses me off for some reason, it really shouldn't. I think iPhone 3 makes sense, but they won't do that because it will get confused with the iPhone 3G. I'm thinking they will give it a specific name or iPhone 3g 2
