I'm in agreement except for MMS. Apple seems to be promoting email (particularly MobileMe email) for this purpose, rather than allowing only the carrier to profit by supporting MMS.
I prefer email to MMS as well, it's a better solution ultimately. However, not everyone has iPhones and when I receive a MMS message from others I'd like to be able to view it without having to jump through hoops. It's not rocket science, it's just Apple digging in their heals over their ideals of how tech should work, even when it hinders their customers. I agree with their stance but it is still something customers want.

Though, out of my original list if I had to pick one feature NOT to make it, it'd be MMS. Voice dialing and copy/paste are two that I really want. Push notifications/background apps will change the nature of apps on the iPhone, so that is exciting but it has partly been a hardware limitation so I'm understanding of that. The copy/paste and voice dialing are ridiculous though, I'm amazed the iPhone is coming up on two years in the market without these basic features.

oh and wat about printing. It could be very useful if the iPhone could wirelessly connect to printers. That would just be a software upgrade right?

why is this out of the blue?

Wow, only one post in 200 vaguely hints at the netbook! I though this is MacRumors?

One could speculate that the recent leaks about a possible netbook with dramatically enhanced iPhone OS could have forced Apple's hand in revealing this before The Steve gets back.

Whats most possible .. a netbook-ish device with iphone os 3.0 on it or a iphone with a higher display resolution (higher PPI) like iPhone HD ??

imo i think iPhone have more then enough Pixel Per Inch for a mobile device ..

The PALM probably scared Apple into previewing OS 3.0, something that they wouldn't normally do. Apple know it's software, not hardware that's gonna keep them on top so I'm expecting something that would totally trump The Palm Pre OS.

Very good, although I won't touch it until 3.1+ is eventually upon us.

While there's things that I'd obviously like improved, 2.2.1 is pretty stable. In fact, it was the very first version for me that didn't crash Safari or Digg style apps on a very regular basis. Still does occassionally, but not enough to annoy.

Apple's hand doesn't get forced by leaks, because then the terrorists win.

Also, I doubt Apple will release a netbook with an OS called "iPhoneOS". They'd give it it's own name, or it'd just be confusing.

They did the same thing last year, why does everyone think this is out of the norm.

They WILL NOT release 3.0 on or a few days after the 17th. What would be the purpose of even having a preview?
Yeah, exactly. They will discuss it and it will come out when the 3rd gen iPhone is released in July 17th (or whenever it is actually released :D)

But, how do we know that Apple WILL or WILL NOT release 3.0 on or a few days after the 17th?

The preview is for developers to get a look at what's coming in the OS and SDK. They wouldn't release it shortly afterward before said developers had a chance to begin working with it.

And the other benefit is to keep current users hopefully from switching to other devices and also attract new users.

My guess is OS 3.0 will come in June with a hardware revision.

This ones really no big WOOP to me. I'm pretty happy with the iphone as it is. Most of the requests I see don't matter to me, I could care less about MMS or copy and paste. I would be pleased with being able to background at least a few apps (the radio apps anyway). But overall the iphone does everything I want out of a pocket/portable device.

I'm with those who say 3.0 and the next set of hardware will determine if I stick with the iPhone. On the software side I want copy and paste, the ability to record and save videos (if it requires a new handset to get the functionality I'm fine with that as I plan to buy a new phone this summer anyway), MMS, the ability to forward both MMS and SMS messages (I could live without SMS forwarding if copy and paste works well) and the ability to teather the phone for Internet access (I don't care how it's implemented .. USB, Bluetooth and/or WiFi are all fine with me). Flash support would be nice (with the ability to shut it off) but it's not a deal breaker.

On the hardware side I want at least a 3 MP camera. The lack of a flash wouldn't be a deal breaker but I'd sure like to have it.

I love the iPhone but I'm tired of not being able to do some of the basic things that other much lesser phones can do. The lack of these features was acceptable when the phone was first released given the nature of the device and the promise that additional features would be added. Two years later and there is no longer any excuse.

Some people seem to be confused at why Apple is showing a preview of a new product. The reason they need to show something like this off before releasing it is so that developers can get going on it and have some interesting things ready into for the public release.

I understand this concept but why have an event and invite the media ?

What.. To show off MMS and copy/paste ? Seems like a bit of overkill to me unless they have something else to talk about.
Last year they had a lot to show off. The App store, games etc.

What else is there?

Ive "I've totally redesigned the iPhone. It's.... well, we wanted to... uhh... we wanted to REALLY get the message across that it's simple. Just. Plain. Simple. To. Use. I think... that when you have simplicity... combined with such beautiful design, gorgeous... so incredible and ... just... just wow, you get something so ..mm.... sooo dramatically different, you know? You get something ... revolutionary. And that's really... that's really what we're trying to do here with the new iPhone."

Interviewer "So can you describe the new design?"

Ive "It's beyond words, really. It's.... god it's beautiful.... we really...hmm... we really pushed our limits this time. I mean, everything from the touch-sensitive shape-changing Home button, to the way the back curves in 3 different places to just perfectly, just absolutely ... astonishingly perfectly, fit in the palm of your hand."

Interviewer "What?"

Ive "Oh god it's incredible. I mean when it came together... I cried. It was so... it was a revolution in your hand, that's what it felt like... a revolution in your hand."

Interviewer "Can you describe the .... you know what, we're just gonna move on... now what about the secure unlocking mechanism? I heard people thought the simple number pad was too easily broken. What have you come up with to contest that?"

Ive "Oh, we've just come up with this... brilliant.. incredible, beautiful way to secure unlock your phone... it's incredible. It's amazing. It's going to make your eyes tear up and cry tears. You see, at first we thought, maybe we add another number pad after the first sequence is entered. But now you're going to find out that you need 3 different slides. But here's the thing... and it's really very revolutionary... here's the thing.... It's really one slide, but the slide changes shape when in different temperatures. So you need to get the 3 specific shapes by going to different temperature rooms to secure unlock your phone. Brilliant."

Interviewer "So like the card keys in metal gear solid."

Ive "Snake is my hero, really. He's simple, very well designed, and... well really, he's revolutionary. He really is. And this time around I think we've made the iPhone a truly real revolution in your hand. Really. Revolutionary. It's.... oh, it's something, alright."

Interviewer "Alright.... thanks for your time."

Ive "I'm not done, I have to tell you about the new mute switch!"

Interviewer "And what an amazing feat that was, thanks for the interview!"

very weird...isn't steve coming back in june?

if steve isn't coming back until june, who is going to give the announcement?
very weird. i would have expected steve to give it. i get a feeling that is part of the reason for the announcement. that and the two year contracts that are ending for 1st gen iphones.

hopefully this is as beautiful or more so than the pre os. i want to see something revolutionary if they're going to do this out of nowhere with 5 days notice. it seems apple is very eager to show off the new os.

if apple is showing the iphone os this early then that means that snow leopard will be the star of the show at wwdc.

please apple don't dissappoint !!!
