Seems to me that this is one of the first cycles in a while were we keep getting conflicting information. I'm trying to take that as a positive sign. Perhaps Apple has finally found a way to actually distract its supply chain and not get its flagship products leaked months before its released.. Although I'm not holding by breath on that.

What would be most exciting is if Apple is planning to release the next iPhone in June, with sales beginning in the fall. Presumably that "may" allow the design and features of the new device to still be in house, like the watch. We heard rumors that there was a watch, but no one had any idea what the watch looked like.. Maybe this next design will actually be substantial, just no one has seen it yet. Obviously it sounds more like wishful thinking, but I suppose anything is possible.

If that's not the case, then I disagree vehemently with their decision to add on features to the bigger screened phone and leave them out of the smaller flagship. A lot of people don't want bigger phones. For many, the + is too big. It doesn't fit in pants pockets comfortably. For women, it's not problem. They carry purses. For a lot of guys, it's a big problem. We don't wear belt clips anymore. How much of an impact would it ultimately have on their sales? Maybe this cycle, not so much.. But all it does is continue to solidify the perception that Apple continues to strive for more and more profit, even if the decision is not in the best interests of its loyal customers. Sell the same phone in the smaller model than the bigger one. If one wants a bigger screen, with a bigger battery, the $100.00 difference can at least be justified. Stripping major features and making them exclusives to the bigger model in search of more profit is not "thinking different." It's acting like every other behemoth corporation who has more interest in pleasing the market than their own customers.

Not saying it won't be nice, but I don't think the majority of people are complaining about the current camera quality on their iPhone.
If this is what Cook is referring to as 'not being able to live without it', then he's surely out of touch (or simply being the salesman).

I don't think the majority of people are complaining about the iPhone camera, but Apple are moving it forward with a dual camera set up. Think back to when people used those point and click cameras that were about 8-10 megapixels, most people now use their phones as point and click cameras, over the last few years more and more people are using their phones to take pictures at birthday parties, on holidays and at other special events. Apple made this even better with the Live Photos feature and the 6s camera, but it will more than likely get better still with the iPhone 7 and a dual camera will probably show people what can be done.
People may not think so but I think this is Apple innovating in the camera area.

They still need to find ways to keep people for buying phones. Apple is playing catch up even if they are slow to the punch.

I tend to think the iPhone is fairly refined at this point and only small updates will be from here on forward. They need a new product or major OS updates to move the product forward.

My phone works fine for me.

It seems I have misread your original post. I agree that everyone has different needs, but then I'm a little confused. The post you were originally replying to mentioned that phone camera's achieved "good enough" status long ago. How does your post actually answer that point...?

I'm already bored with the iPhone 7, yawn... IPhone 8, 10th Anniversary edition will hopefully be something to upgrade to from my 6+.

interesting how people have become attuned to buying a new phone every 1-2 years...
instead of being happy that they don't need to buy a new phone and can save the money for something else, they are complaining.

still happy with my iphone5. will be a big update, when i finally replace it. and then i'll get used to it in like 2 weeks and it's nothing special anymore.

the battery is starting to show some aging signs and i get some slowdowns. but i might wait another year, because i would love an OLED screen.

Buy a DSLR if images are your main criteria .

Just went to holiday to India , took my Sony rx1 , it's very compact, and my iPhone 6 Plus. My 6 plus images look like crap compared to the rx1, I treasure my images, hence only use my phone as a last resort.

did you mean to say you wanted the very best image quality that a smartphone is capable of ? I think the Nokia's still lead that :p
[doublepost=1462986794][/doublepost]

For a smartphone, yeah it should be a nice jump in quality.
Why should I have to settle for two devices when Apple can make one device with a great camera that's also an amazing all-around device.

The answer to "I want a better phone camera" isn't "Get a DSLR"

I was willing to look past how ugly my iPhone 6 was because of the large screen. After a year with it, I realized that I'm sick of lugging it around and it's ugly, so I bought an iPhone SE and I'm totally happy.

...they really are for the most part. The camera is such a minimal upgrade from the regular to the plus...imo. Maybe this gen will change that.

Personally I think I am going back to a SE if and when my 6S breaks.
I'd love to go to the SE but I've gotten used to the 3D touch and don't want to go back

1. The image quality of the iPhone sucks compare to my RX1, I'm not settling, you are

2. You said you wanted the best quality pictures to last a lifetime. That's not a phone camera.

And the part you ignored , Apple does not have the best camera, nor did it ever .

What you actually want is an iPhone with the best camera. Let's not confuse that with the best phone camera or best quality images possible .

Your are in luck , the 7 should have the best camera for an iPhone.

Oh, how I wish the only difference between the 4.7" and 5.5" phones was the screen size.

Yet the iPad Pro 9.7 ships with 2GB of RAM....
Yes, this is one of the reasons why I don't believe the rumors of an iPhone with 3GB of RAM.

First, I believe Apple will go from 2GB to 4GB. Second, I believe the 9.7" iPad Pro will make the move from 2GB to 4GB before the iPhones do. Third, Apple very recently switched from 1GB to 2GB for iPhones, so it is too soon to produce iPhones with more than 2GB.

With a 2GB 9.7" iPad Pro and a 4GB 12.9" iPad Pro, it's clear enough that Apple don't see 3GB as a reasonable capacity for anything. Apple have never chosen a RAM capacity for any iOS device that was not a power of 2, so it would be surprising if they would break that pattern with 3GB.

Man alive, that design doesn't look pretty.

And I'm not a plus user, I think it blows that we get locked out of a decent camera.

The camera in the smaller phone is still VERY good. Go big or go home lol (joking). I've had a 6 and 6s+ and found the camera's on both to be very good.

dear lord thats ugly

It's probably not even real or a rough prototype at best.

What are you even talking about?

It seems like Apple's strategy is to update one or two hardware features at a time to each new iteration of the same phone.

And of all the things people ask for (i.e. complain about) the camera isn't one of them. I really hope there's something more in store for the 7. Otherwise it's a 6 with relocated antennas, a better camera system and more RAM to support the camera. Not exactly the type of innovation that will reassure shareholders.

Yeah. Apple stock is going to keep going down. Between this past quarter and this non upgrade to the iphone 7, sales will continue to take a hit. But it's not the worst thing for a shareholder. Great opportunity to buy more shares if you ask me. The stock should rebound in 2017 with the release of the 10th anniversary iphone. I'd hold off buying apple stock until early next year.

Sure. That trend follows with every other product Apple makes that has multiple screen size options. If you order a custom iMac or the MacBook Pro/MacBook Air so that the internals are relatively similar and the only difference is the screen size, you'll be paying at least $100.00 more for the larger screen version (and in most cases, much more than $100.00 extra).

My post is an answer to those who complain about having better camera on the Plus version. We have to pay 100 more for the bigger phone and Apple is giving us more than just a screen size increase -- which I think is better than just having bigger screen only.

Obviously i know the trend you're talking about. But as a consumer, I demand more for each buck I spend. Fundamental of economy: consumer want more for each bucks, companies want to produce more profit off for each buck(cost).

They are already charging $130 extra for cellular enabled iPad. I don't think cellular module is more expensive than bigger and higher resolution screen.

Yeah. But less than 1 inch increase in screen size for $100?

Look at Macbook Air 11 and 13 inch price diff.. 2 inch increase and increase in other specs (ram, etc) for $100 premium.

My point is that people shouldn't complain Plus version having better camera. It justify the the premium price, in my opinion, although I wish Apple would increase other specs as well.

Wait for 2017 or upgrade from the measly 1GB RAM in my 6 Plus? This is my first world dilemma.

I hear you. Tired of webpages reloading when I switch out to deal with an email or similar. 2GB 6s and 3D touch and Live Photos are tempting me to upgrade from my 6, and the iPhone 7 related news seemingly reinforcing the lack of a 3.5mm headphone jack (essential!) has me pondering the same dilemma.

Flop.

Who are we kidding, they will sell like hotcakes and Apple will not get their wake up call.

What wake up call? Stop pretending your opinion matters more than the vast majority of users who you say will buy them in droves.

I'm sorry, but I need to ask this because I see it so often and do not understand it. Why do you place such an emphasis on the camera.

I'm not faulting you for it. There are many people who do this. I'm just trying to understand.

I admit that the camera is a very useful device to have on a smartphone. But I don't understand the emphasis on the quality that many people place on it.

It seems to me that smartphone camera quality achieved "good enough" status several years ago.
Many people are interested in photography but don't want to carry a big SLR with them everywhere they go. I save my photos for years and look back over them often. The higher quality the better.
