What if the rumored ARM Mac and this rumored Smart KB w/Trackpad is really a reference to the same device
In my mind, a good bit of Apple’s silliness can be better understood if you accept that they seriously don’t plan to bring iOS to the macOS or macOS to iOS (except for app and data compatibility). As a result, it makes sense (to me) that they wouldn’t likely put macOS in an iOS window.

Why pay huge amounts of money for a MacBook Pro when 5mm ARM iPads are just as powerful and same cost as a MacBook and half the cost of a MacBook Pro.

Speaking for myself: Because the software I need to use isn't available for the iPad. Also, iOS lacks the necessary functionality I need out an operating system, but I can find this in Mac OS.

I just can't do my work on iOS, it's lacking in far too many areas.

I use my iPad Pro for 99% of my work and it’s also my main communication device. I have a keyboard attached to it so having true mouse/trackpad support would make it extremely functional but I bet that’s not going to happen until iOS 14.

One thing they should do is make a Smart Connector adapter so you can use put the iPad on a stand and still use the Apple keyboard without having to resort to a BlueTooth keyboard. BT keyboards sometimes goes wonky when on screen sharing calls and using AirPods - like all the BT channels are overcrowded. But, being able to use a stand for the iPad when in laptop mode is a neck/shoulder saving move.

iOS 13 really opened the door for more daily use and iOS 14 will make it more so. A true pointing device takes it to another level.

Why not kill the ipad? Since the mac is an better product..

Nope...I like the ease of use of iOS, touch, Pencil, detachable keyboard that is not required or permanently tacked on, the different sizes of iPad (I have a mini 4, a 6th Gen 9.7” and 2nd Gen 12.9” that all serve different uses cases for me), optional cellular, et al. I use my iPad for 90% of my computing needs now and my 27” iMac Core i9/64GB DRAM/1TB SSD/Vega 48 for my heavy lifting (audio, video, virtual machines, et al).

I only need a few more enhancements in iPadOS to make the iPad my everyday workhorse device. My MacBook Pros are going up for sale this year.

If my 2019 iMac is not able to cut it’s my needs change, I’ll move up to an (updated) iMac Pro or a Mac Pro. My goal is to have one very powerful Mac, one large screen iPad Pro (would love a 15” version), my iPhone and the other two smaller iPads that I own and that’s it. If I need dedicated testing hardware, a mini would fill that void. But my days of buying MacBook Pros are done. I simply prefer the iPad Pro. I don’t want the iPhone, the iPad or the Mac to go away, but my needs are changing and the MacBook Pro simply is not part of the plan anymore.

After 18 years of using a PowerBook or a MacBook Pro almost 100% exclusively as my number one computing device, it’s a huge shocker to and it’s been an adjustment. However, I’m on a path that makes sense to me. Not saying it’s for everyone, but it might be for a large majority of us.

Yeah, because a laptop over an iPad is monstrous and so heavy.

You’re missing the point.

Using an iPad in landscape or portrait mode has so many more use cases than doing the L-BOW bend carrying around a laptop until I can find a place to perch like a gargoyle with the aforementioned laptop. My main compute device is an iPad, my laptop says are over.

On the flip side, I don’t want Apple to stop making Mac ms by any stretch of the imagination.

I can see it now

the iPad is gonna kill sales of MacBooks and MacBook pro's

because ios is lame?

I will definitely get one of these. I just ordered two of the 2018 256GB 12.9 iPad Pro for myself and wife with the pencils. I bit the bullet because I can’t imagine the extra horsepower being worth the extra cost. I paid $2200 for both plus pencils. I was about to buy the Brydge keyboard case with trackpad but I like the portability of Apple’s design better.

These will presumably not be designed for the ipads you just bought.

It won’t....I use my iPad Pro all of the time for business.....the finger point is inaccurate and a total pain in the a... The mouse and or track pad are much more elegant solutions and should have been adopted long ago.

Bad idea. Let each paradigm be true to itself. Trying to be a jack of all trades will just lead to a mess.

Hopefully this heralds more Mac-like functionality from iPadOS 14! :)
I seriously hope they update the files app. Currently when I transfer files to and from my home network storage there’s no progress bar. It’s nice that I can do it with file app, but time remaining would be great. Even better if I could get a notification pop down that the file transfer completed so I could do something else and not worry if iOS is actually going to complete the process since files app doesn’t have the equivalent progress bar window like Mac does. Tag support would be nice too.

What the? I don't even know how to respond. You have always been able to save files. The files app allows you to save files to more places more like you do with a mac but huh?
Actually this is a valid point. Many art apps-procreate, affinity designer, ect--just close the file to the app
sandbox. You have to share it elsewhere. This makes versioning very awkward.

I hope if this rumor is correct, that they make a version that will work with the 2018 versions too. I love my 12.9” iPP, but can’t stand having to use my finger on the screen for certain functionality.

I actually bought a Pencil just to further minimize my need to put a finger on the screen, but it’s not yet enough.

Bring on the Apple keyboard with integrated trackpad, I say.

If they only release a trackpad for iPad Pro I’ll be really irritated. I imagine many third parties will have options soon after Apple though.
