To anyone saying these spec bumps would be enough, you are forgetting one very important thing. A large large part of any phone's appeal is fashion, a lot of people will see it as the same phone regardless of the internal change, plus a lot of people are valuing the bigger screen over a lot of other things, so I can understand people being unhappy if it is the same design

Perception counts for a lot. They'll have to push the voice recognition thing pretty hard to emphasize the new shiny if there's no redesign.

If you read the interview on 9to5mac it requires very powerful cpu and more ram.

Assuming you even care to use it, which I don't. So if no 5, then either a used 4 or Android. My wife has a 4 and I was not that impressed by the retina display and minor speed bump from my 3gs, so .....

So the millions of people who have been buying iPhone 4's even though they're old and outdated designs from last summer are the minority, or are the basment dwellers on here who think a phone's case is more important than the hardware and software inside in the minority?

What about the millions of people who went out and bought the iPhone 3GS even though it was physically identical (save the shiny vs. matte Apple logo and text on the back)?

I think that smartphones, in particular Android and iOS phones, have been out for long enough that most of the public who would be purchasing these are more intune with which software they like better than what the back of the phone is made of. People have been flocking to smartphones because they're software allows them to do more, not because of the hardware advances. The hardware is secondary to the vast majority of people. They only become disgruntled with the hardware when its a few years old and it runs the latest software slowly.

So outside of updating the OS, what here is revolutionary or special? A curved back?! No one has ever had a phone with a curved back before! Why didn't Apple think of that?! A big screen? I'm pretty sure that there are already phones introduced with screens this size. How long before we have 5.5" or 6" screens and you're carrying around a tablet in your pocket?

Again, tell me what is really NEW outside of the Android 4.0?

It's also supposedly a higher resolution screen. Not retina display, but still HD. The renderings I've seen look nice, if they are for real. I agreed Android 4.0 is the real story (as is iOS 5 for the iPhone), but the fresh design for the hardware is attractive, nonetheless.

I have a Nexus One and plan to switch to the iPhone 4S since it's finally supported at my office. That said, the Prime might win some style points on the market. Remember, a lot of buying decisions are psychological. The new MacBook Air last year had a fresh new design that helped sell it, even though a lot of the internals were similar to the previous model. 9 months later, a spec bump was perfectly fine, but the PC market moves slower than the mobile market. People don't expect "new" devices every year, and don't upgrade on a regular two-year cycle as they do with phones.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN, Apple have dropped the ball.

Hello Nexus Prime, what a gorgeous 4.5" screen you have.

Yeah the screen looks great just the stuff on the screen look worse than on the 18 month old iPhone 4.

Rumors.....

They should release a redesigned iPhone 5, or many fans will be disappointed. Not only did they encounter big delays in the white iPhone 4, to release a revised version of the 4 is not what consumers want to see. They don't want small upgrades at the cost of renewing contracts. They want significantly new products. I'd take a redesigned iPhone 5 with iPhone 4 guts over an iPhone 4S with new guts.

Hey now, I was here during that event (in another form) and that was perhaps the worst of the fail proclamations I have ever witnessed. Of course, I think the phrase "it's just a big iPod Touch" was far more ubiquitous than "fail" (or maybe equal?). Either way, its comical seeing now just how popular it is in sales, although I must admit, I expected more (and what I expected is slowly falling into place).

Of course, when it comes to this crowd, history will repeat itself over and over. Just take a look at that thread revolving around the first iPod unveiling. People were positive it was going to be a certifiable failure.

Funny how enthusiasts and fans are always so wrong, from sports to electronics.

Hey, I was never wrong about any Apple product, because I never gave any opinions about the possible success/failure. :))) And I'm a fan.

Lets see, I waited in line for the original iPhone, 3G, 3GS,& 4. I can't believe I'm gonna say this, but if the new product is only a speed bump + software enhancements that there is an 80% chance will work on my 4, I'll pass on this one as my 4 works great and I can't really feel the need of another 2 year contract. I guess you have to look at the big picture here as Apple's biggest growth will be in Asia and they will sell oodles of these guys. There also is an incredible range of options now available from other mfg.'s that weren't available before so I may check out the dark side........

I still can't believe Apple would wait 18 months just for a spec bump. Doesn't make sense, no matter how many rumors I read.

They waiting about 12 months for a speed bump before for the 3GS, and this is a bigger more involved speed bump with a dual-core. So I can believe it, especially if there were issues getting enough A5s for production.

I don't understand the whole notion "Apple can't spend 16 months just putting an A5 in an iPhone4!!!!!"

Yes, they can't and they' didn't. Apple spent 16 months into iOS 5. As a developer I can say iOS4 to iOS5 is like going from Tiger to Leopard.

You are assuming that Apple will actually go for a bigger screen. Why? Apple stopped producing 30" displays and now only offering 27". If anything, they are cutting on screen sizes. :)

I'm not talking about a huge screen like some of the ridiculous androids I see, but a modestly bigger screen and maybe a not-so-fragile case as the 4 would be a welcome change.

What do you guys think is wrong with the current design that you feel is crucial for Apple to change it?

Is it because of the screen size?

Yes several people want a lower resolution less clear and crisp display that is larger. I assume they all have bad cataracts.

Highlights of this thread:

1. People saying they won't buy it because the device is "named" in such a way.

2. People saying they won't buy it because it does not has a redesigned case.

3. People saying they won't buy it because there are "bigger" phones out there.

They said the same thing about the 3Gs (and I remember correctly them saying the same thing about the mock-ups and leaks for the brick-like iPhone 4. I remember reading a TON of posts of people saying that it was ugly and they wanted the same type of 3Gs look) and yet Apple didn't seem to suffer at all. Funny how all these people say they aren't going to buy it "if this" or "if that" yet the lines are still HUGE, the phones still sell-out, etc.

It's funny, mock-ups of the 5 come out and people say "Why change it, the iPhone 4 is a masterpiece! and that's ugly!!, I'm getting an Andriod" then rumors come out that it's a iPhone 4s type of update and people are saying "Why wait 16 months for an internal upgrade, this sucks, I'm getting an Android" Guess some people just aren't happy either way.

But the best part is that we all know that most people on here, post here and come here religiously are all going to be getting one or wanting one. I'd love to go back to the first day of iPhone posts and see how many of these people who say they aren't getting the iPhoneX actually got it and started the complaining all over again, just to end up here talking about how awesome the one in their hand is and how they aren't getting the new one. I bet the numbers would be staggering. The only iPhone I didn't like was the original (and had valid reasons). I went from a Blackberry (and various other smartphones at the time) to the original and didn't like it, so switched back to the BB. Once the apps and iOS got better I went to the iPhone again and haven't looked back yet. And like a sheep I'll be pre-ordering this one no matter what it's called or looks like haha

Hope the assistant can help me pick out my new android.
+1

I can't believe how worked up people are getting over all this (on both sides of the coin might I add).

Why not save the pent up fury and rage until we all know what's been announced after the event? :p
Oh, it will.

For those thinking about getting the Galaxy S II instead of the 4S, I'm curious:

Is the choice a purely aesthetic one? If the A5 version in the iPhone turns out to be better than what the Galaxy S II has will you regret your choice to move to that phone? Or will you be happy because you enjoy the aesthetic of the S2 better?

And what about iOS 5?

I say this without mockery or sarcasm, I'm truly curious.
How many times does it have to be drilled into people's heads that a redesign is desired because it will involve a larger screen? That and the brick shape of the 4 is very polarizing. Half hate it and half love it.

Ditto....no 5 no dice...they can keep the 4s BS

I find this funny ... Here we go again ... iOS does not have widgets .... what a Crappy OS ...

iPhone does not have a 4 inch + + screen like the Androids phones ... What a BS design Apple did last year ...

My god .... how many people changes their phone every year just to have a new design ??? If that's not impulse buying just to show off to the world you have the latest gadget, then I don't know what it is !

I mean ... under the hood .. the A5 outclasses the Galaxy S2 SOC in every benchmark ...

I think that the OS experience is what really makes the iPhone different from the rest ... lets see what will happen this afternoon !
