Very curious about the Mac Pros.

I hope Apples cancels the entry level models like the 4-cores and offers only pro level machines, but starting below $3500 (the "cheapest" of the current Mac Pros one would want to buy).

A 30" iMac with wide gamut display for professional users... with a matte surface and no glass panel in front of it.

New form factor with a flatter appearance of the panel section (as it would be extremely big).

But for now I'd be happy over a nice Mac Pro line update.

Me too. I will be gobsmacked if Intel has given them super early access to X79 (or whatever they're calling the Xeon-friendly chipset) and Sandy Bridge-E. Anything else would be a downgrade in platform for the Mac Pro.

I'm missing the macbook and macmini in this rumor, both seem to be inline for an update aswell.
Absolutely! I have been pointing this out for quite some time now, the specs of these two products are beyond every reason and have already been completely ludicrous 6 months ago. If they don't do anything about them now, I'm gonna stop believing in any remaining common sense at APL.

I just can't understand why it is so hard for a large company like Apple to update their products adequately in such a fast changing sector like IT.

Unless they added a few extra days to the week, they are not being released until the 19th at the least.

Fingers crossed.

I have a trip in two weeks and I'm hoping that they will be available to order straight away, or in store! Will be much easier taking a 13" Air than my 17" MBP

I'd love an i7 entry model tbh. Maybe with a price tag just below 2000 $

I hope they introduce a non-Xeon low-end Mac Pro in a more reasonable sized case to include a fast i7, plenty of scope for extra RAM, at least three drive bays and a half-decent graphics card.

Apple have taken the Mac Pro TOO high end and tried to push people into the iMac and MacBook Pro lines. If you're a 2D print or web designer that wants a decent desktop where you can choose your own screen and pack it full of storage to have to spend over £2000. If (urgh) I was using Windows I wouldn't spend more than around £800 for a 'graphic design' PC.

I use a 24" iMac but before that ALWAYS bought entry-to-mid level towers - G3, G4. I felt priced out of that market with the Mac Pro.

Well hopefully the Mac Pro gets a decent refresh. It's default config is a terrible value right now... 3 gigs of ram, I mean really????

But the macbook and mac mini are overdue for a change... You would think they would refresh at least the macbook before the "back to school" season gets into full swing...

If they gave the mac mini a reasonable basic gaming card (even if it's integrated... anything but the intel card really) that would be sweet! But I'm not holding my breath on that one...

Agreed.

This will almost certainly be a soft launch, shipping later this year!

Got a 2008 2.53Ghz C2D MBP

Thinking of swapping to the new 11" MBA - how do you think they'll compare overall? Obviously the SSD/flash will be quicker and I'm not too bothered about the GPU but in pure single-threaded performance how do you think 1 of the 4 available 1.6Ghz Sandy-Bridge threads will do against one of the 2 C2D threads? Thanks.

i hope so too. rumour a few wks ago said the base would now be 6 cores, but regardless, it's the pricing. I need a new mac pro, but unless i sell my macbook pro and 2009 mac pro, it's not happening (well, unless the new mac pros are fantastically priced).

Is it really required that the storage be inside the box for some security/retention reason? Otherwise, the current iMacs can drive 2 or 3 screens and can hook you to just as much (if not more) storage sleds than a Mac pro.

If were going to place a mini-tower on the desk/workspace then use the "footprint" it was going to take for the storage box. Put the monitor you like better "front and center" and put the iMac screen ( running Mail , Manuals , and secondary stuff you don't want to look at off to the side.). Glossy is bad for some work, but it is better for others so you'd have a mix of monitors.

Sure if your 2D work "needs" more than 300-400MB of VRAM you may run into problems with the entry/mid range iMacs, but for many folks this will just work.

If cost is the primary issue, then a Windows PC box will have more options. However, "forced to by Mac Pro" issue isn't as widespread as it has historically been made out to be.

Well hopefully the Mac Pro gets a decent refresh. It's default config is a terrible value right now... 3 gigs of ram, I mean really????

If a large fraction of the buyers are going to go with 3rd party RAM ( more affordable ) then why put in sticks that are not going to get used long term anyway? There are 3 memory controller channels. They stick in the smallest 3 so that the machine can be tested and shipped. On the dual package model there are 6 controllers and 6 DIMMs used to test/ship.

If going to buy > 16GB of RAM many folks won't go with Apple. For the corporate folks who absolutely have to use just one purchase order to get the box... Apple takes them to the hoop on pricing. And they weren't buying the 3GB config anyway.

At this point I'd aggree that 2GB DIMM stick should be as expensive as 1GB DIMM ones were 3-4 years ago so Apple is also pocketing the profits.

Is it too much to hope for a Sandy Bridge Mac Mini with decent graphics?
