People who are critical of the Mac Pro mainly because of its processing speed compared to the latest iMacs and MacBook Pros obviously belong to the first camp. They probably buy cars soley based on the 0-100kph time.

There is nothing wrong with expecting a fast computer when you are passing the $3000 price mark.

I wonder if the MacBook white will be discontinued altogether, or whether they'll release a (C2D) $799 model or something. Unless my memory is failing me, they haven't put out a "education only" model since the eMac, but I can still see them doing this. On the other hand, they'd likely rather push the iPad.

you hit the nail on the head. this is why i think MBA will replace the Macbook.

How come the memory performance is better on an older architecture? Don't get me wrong I'm not trying to start an argument :) I use a 12 core MP, but was seriously considering getting these new(er) ones..

The Xeons in the current Mac Pros have 3 memory controllers, allowing triple channel memory performance at 1333MHz. The only currently available Sandy Bridge Xeons have two memory controllers for dual channel performance at@ 1333MHz (like the iMacs). Some suggest these should or will be used. That's what we were talking about :)

The actual replacement for what is in the current Mac Pro isn't due for a while, so if Apple use it then it'll be before others. These have 4 memory controllers and some will use 1600MHz memory so are better.

Then there is also series coming with three memory controllers next year.

Well, I'm sure I still won't like the price, but if the pro update is anything at all notable, I'll buy my first new mac in over 3 years. I'm overdue.

And as an aside to whoever mentioned the education macs, there was actually an edu version of the 17" iMac, with intel 950 graphics I think, that came post-eMac.

I hope they they do come out Thursday! Just might get myself a Mac Pro for the first time.

Better and Best

The better and best in what's probably two screen sizes is a good sign. It probably means that Apple has a stock version ("best") in each size with more memory and storage. And that probably means better prices and faster shipping than having a clumsy array of add-on options. I just hope they narrowed the price and feature gap between the 11" and 13" model. In the current versions, the stock 11" model is under powered and overpriced, particularly given the poor battery life.

Apple Marketing missed out grammatically though. With two options, you can have "good and better," but it takes three to have two that are "better and best." There's nothing in this listing for the "better" to be better than.

I think I get the "Pro" moniker now ...

I think I see what's going on here. MacPro, FCP/X, no BRD, on and on ....

The PRO in Macintosh lines are like the Pro is Pro Wrestling - it's for entertainment only, not serious stuff.

There still is a 20" iMac for sales for educational institutions with the NVIDIA 9400 in it for $899 I think. Overpriced now...they really should update to something a little more current.

Am I mistaken with my terms, or technically is there no such thing as a "gold master" for OS X Lion? Given that it is supposed to be purely a digital release, a gold master (physical golden disc used as a master template for CD/DVD production factories) cannot exist?

The term still may apply though, in that it is the "final and locked in" version of the code that will be released to the public. However, again considering the digital only nature of Lion, the time frame from "GM release" to "public release" can be exceedingly short, since there is no need to actually ship a golden master to a factory and have physical media made. Really wouldn't all they would need to do would be to upload it to the mac app store server and that's it?

Ruahrc

Actually the term 'gold master' refers to the factory mold, not the actual disc. The term 'golden master' as used by apple for over 20 years is simply a coined phrase for the final version of the software. The two are always confused.

If i.e. a school buy that iMac they'll get a substantial educational discount. Apple has an arrangement where resellers can claim back the rebates given to their educational customers.

Oh, btw ... new SB & TB Mac mini soon please!

Mr X? Seriously?

Is anyone else held up on the backlit keys for the Airs?
I feel they need them...they had them in the past, so it's not like Apple can't reconsider.

That's a deal maker (or breaker) for me...

Oh, I'm sorry, was that rumor confirmed then? Or at least substantiated enough to warrant such smug responses?

Yeah cuz, there's nothing smug about saying you will totally dump on you're planned (implied) computer upgrade if Apple doesn't fasten a chip consistent with your personal specifications.
(I don't mean you; but O.P.)

They've gone back and forth over the years. It looks like they pretty much stake out who they will throw money at for a period of time (1-2 generations) and then let them fight each other again the next time around. Apple is out for the best bang for the buck that meets their needs.

Which is very unfortunate for Apple customers who need CUDA support.

Man I hope there is a Pro refresh with a SFF case on it....

We don't need these hulking cheese graters anymore...long over due for a case refresh.
