Why exactly would someone want their iPhone back-up on the cloud? I'm serious, what are the advantages? Wouldn't this waste space on someone's iCloud account. This would use up over 25% of someone's iCloud account - for a file you would rarely even use. Seems to me this is just for sht n giggles and would be more practical to just keep your back-up on a local computer.

A lot of people, myself included, do not make the daily habit of connecting their iOS devices to their main computer and making sure that they back up their devices. The backup in iCloud thus provides a more up to date backup in the case that something happens and I need to restore it. It's nice that it backs up at least once a day, especially when I go to sleep and have it on charge and connected to Wi-Fi. Most of my backups are at night between midnight and 3am.

But we don't need to physically connect to the computer anymore, now that iOS5 supports wifi sync. So again, why would someone that has a computer at home want to waste cloud space with backups?

Get a replacement/upgrade iPhone, you don't need to go home to restore everything, you can do it right there.

As mentioned you get backups every night rather than just when you plug in your iPhone to your computer.

Computer failure=lost backup.

My backups are only 120mb.

Why not backup to iCloud? If you are worried about space you can always upgrade it, but backups really are about the only thing that use your storage quota so why not? You do realize that music/books/apps don't use the 5GB right?

Mail, documents, Camera Roll, account information, settings, and other app data is what is eating up the 5GB.

iCloud Backups dont use space for anything downloadable from itunes. So things like music and apps do not take up space in a backup. Only settings, data, photos, etc are backed up. My backup only takes up only a couple 100 MBs or so, not 25%. Also, you could ask why would anyone want to use any online backup service for their files like dropbox or carbonite when they can jsut back it up at home. First theres the added reliability in case your computer fries and the disk is unusable, second theres the portability. Using iCloud your device can be restored from a backup from anywhere with an internet connection not just from home.

Because if for any reason you are away from home you can restore your phone without any issues. While abroad on holiday my phone decided to update to the latest beta and got stuck in a reboot loop. As I wasn't away with my laptop I had to install the latest beta onto my phone and my iCloud backup brought everything back without a hitch. I am happy to backup my phone manually but I think iCloud gives you an extra safety blanket.

A lot of people don't have a computer running 24/7, and so wifi sync at night would do nothing if there is no computer running iTunes at the time. iCloud is always there. I rarely back up my iPhone currently, so I am super excited about iCloud backups.

And if you're so worried about your backup size, pay $20 a YEAR(5 cents a day) to get 15GB total storage.

You are only allowed to be happy you'll be getting iCloud backup functionality. To be super excited about backing up you phone is very sad.

When people say invite, it is not an invitation to download iOS 5.

Apple sends out an invite to the media because they are holding a Keynote soon to show off the iPhone 4S/5 and announce iOS 5 related stuff as well.

Beta 7 was 3:40PM Pacific which is 4.5 hours from now, but I'm 99% sure we won't see GM(or another iOS 5/iTunes beta) until event on Oct 4.

So no iOS 5 GM today then? Too late?

Who knows. If it is coming it might now be until this evening.

However, I doubt we will see a GM today. Possibly a 8th beta. Apple might have a few secrets in the finalized version of iOS 5, which they won't want leaked before their event. If that's the case, then they will release the GM the day of the event, telling developers to submit their iOS 5 apps. Then release iOS to the public a week later, just a few days before the new iPhone(s).

I've got a question about podcasts - how do they work? are they part of iTunes which doesn't count towards your 5G limit? do new podcasts download automatically or do i need to turn on my computer to get them to sync?

You say the GM comes out at event everytime but the iPhone also came out in the summer everytime too.

Its sad that we have to wait for the GM or the offical launch of IOS5 because we already know about the software from the last event so why another event to release it ? They said in the last event its coming this fall so let it come and not let us wait for a damn event ... just saying
LOL

Last time kids.

Apple will not release the GM before any new iPhone is announced because if they did people would find out about the new phone before it is announced. The GM will have specific info on said new phone.
