I'd rather see improved iPad performance.

My iPad 4's battery lasts more than the 10 hours Apple advertises (generally around 12-13), so I don't see how they wouldn't be able to put a 14-15 hour battery in the new models, considering they will be two generations apart.

The thing that really bugs me about iPad and is the reason I've yet to upgrade my iPad 3 is that the machine needs a massive bump in performance. So I'd rather see Apple imcrease performance even if that means keeping battery life the same. They can do this by bumping RAM to 4GB and upping the SoC clock rate to at least 2.1 GHz.

Admittedly such performance increases will impact battery life but with the modern A8 or hopefully an A8X we can make up for some of that performance gain with better thermals of the A8X.

Curious why you think this is the key to improved performance? According to a recent test done by Cult of Android the iPhone 6 beat the HTC One and the Samsung 5 (both of which have more RAM and a theoretical faster clock rate) in a multitasking speed test. Not just by a little bit, either. Hey, it's Cult of Android, I don't think they designed a test for the iPhone to win. ;)

I would caution people to not get distracted by specs, rather look at results, but I know to some that's irrelevant; fair enough. I just don't think performance is as simple as specs.

ipad pro had best be highly pressure sensitive or have some mind-boggling new stylus tech that accomplishes the same thing. designers have been waiting for apple's 'cintiq' since we heard rumors of a tablet in 2008/9... if it won't run adobe software in full, i don't see many of us going for it in lieu of wacoms' offerings. how likely is an apple tablet to run OSX...? sigh...
You do realize that your concept of an iPad doesn't jive at all with Apples. You are looking for a fancy input device, which you can already buy by the way. Apple on the other hand is moving the world over to a next generation computing device. I would expect many other fine improvements befor touch sensitivity ever hits the iPad.
if apple was a top 40 band, artists, musicians and coders were apple's 1st fan base, donating money in the figurative hat being passed around when it wasn't even hip to support them. i do hope they'll cater to us with this thing.

They won't because that isn't what the iPad is. As for your "support" you got the hardware or software they where selling at the time didn't you. That is fair trade and you really shouldn't expect more than that. Apple has to sell products that make money and if they don't they go the way of XServe and other hardware that Apple just could get market adoption for. The device you are asking for already suffers from a very small market and is good enough reason for Apple to leave production to specialist companies.

the more i think about it, the more the ipad line seems to just be stagnating. the basic concept of the device has not changed since 2010. they just update it every year with a better screen and beefed up internals. there needs to be some kind of fundamental change/breakthrough in the device like maybe combining the macbook air with the ipad line into some kind of surface pro 3 thing, or letting it act as a 2nd display when paired with an OS X machine or something.

Er...yes.

A lot of 'what else is on the market right now' have better display gamuts.

You know what? I am going to gentlemanly admit my mistake, and that I am wrong. My memory is playing trick on me obviously. This clearly illustrates that the color gamut was the rMini's Achilles heel:

I definitely need the new iPad to come out now so I can sell this piece of junk I am using right now. I think I know where my headaches are coming from now...plus TouchID would be nice to have.

Anyone want to buy a 128GB White iPad rMini???

I have a 4th generation iPad, when I bought it I was stupid and only went for the 16 GB one. Now I am trying to find an excuse to get a new one, not an easy task really. The battery is just as amazing as it was back then, the screen is still perfect, so I hope Apple come up with a good excuse for me to upgrade.
Though I would prefer if they would surprise me with a new Mini, as the Mini was the computer that got me into the whole Apple thing really.

I wonder if the reason Handoff got pulled out of Yosemite for the MBA is because Apple Marketing decided it would be a way to help force all of us to upgrade to the new rMBA being announced? I guess that's just ridiculous wild speculation with no basis in reality.

Generally features get pulled due to the lack of reliable hardware support, bugs or other issues. With the Mac line Apple has generally been pretty good about supporting old hardware. Beyond that Apple doesn't have to force retina upgrades, if they can deliver a rMBA in the same price range they would have all the upgrades they can handle.

As for a RMBA I suspect that the only thing holding that up is a suitable Broadwell processor. This makes me wonder if Intel has any public announcements coming between now and Apples event. If not then I doubt we will see a RMBA this month. This also highlights just how important GPUs are for modern computers, MBA doesn't suffer significantly from CPU performance issues but it does need a beer GPU.

The other thing I wonder about is if Apple and AMD have something up their sleeves for this year. The two companies have been working very closely of late and Apple has hired many AMD engineers. Makes me wonder if Apple will launch a new AMD GPU or even possibly a new APU. Don't laugh because there has to be some explanation for the Global Foundries / Samsung tie up. Imagine an ApU built on a low power process that has a high performance GPU built in. That could make for a very nice Mini or even a RMBA.

Imagine taking that thing into a store and using the TouchID with ApplePay:eek:
I take my iPad into stores all the time. It is better than leaving it in the car with a steal me sign on it. So yeah I can imagine using it for Apple Pay.

However this might not be Apples goal with the iPad. Instead I can see them adding hardware to the iPad to make the iPad capable of receiving card payments. Think about this a bit as it would turn iPad into the ultimate portable business appliance.
We may see split screen multitasking on these new iPads and more RAM.

More ram is an absolute must. I don't have a huge need for split screen multitasking though. I'd rather see the ability to slide in an app similar to how the today screen slides down. This would be great for a calculator app or other apps you commonly switch to.

So I guess I might have a new iPad before I get my iPhone Plus delivered, and one BIG bill instead of 2.

Having all this stuff hit at once is not easy, do I need it? no, but I have to have it:D

to know, mostly by the news about the new iMac. Not being a big fan of AMD (underpowered GPUs and so on....), would like to know why not nVIDIA chips....?....
There are lots of possibilities, I will make a list for you:
  1. NVida isnt what it is cracked up to be. most of the whining about NVida comes from people wanting CUDA support but CUDA is a dying technology.
  2. By going to AMD they have the potential to leverage the same drivers used in the new Mac Pro. this is significant and frankly the quality of the drivers for the Mac Pro is very good.
  3. AMD has a history of doing much better compute wise when dealling with 64 bit floating point. In general AMD has the better compute environment.
  4. Most likely Apple would be using a new AMD GPU so we would be getting good performance at low power.
  5. AMD has a history of very good capability with respect to fast I/O ports. They should be able to do the latest standards pretty easy.
  6. AMD has been very vocal, loud even, about a willingness to do custom work. Mac Pro is one example but I could see them doing even more for Apple right down to custom silicon. NVidia has been just the opposite in this regard. The question then becomes what would Apple want on a custom GPU die. Hard to say for sure but video decoders come to mind. We can't dismiss custom camera processors either.
Someone care to elaborate/theorize?.....:D
Well lots of theories above! The one thng I know for sure is that much of the whining about AMD is baseless. In the end the big selling point would likely be Mac Pro driver compatibility. Imagine an iMac with two GPUs set up in a fashion similar to the Mac Pro. Lower performance GPUs for sure, due to thermal issues, but still offering some of the same performance advantages.

Given all of that people need to remember they are reacting to rumors here, we really don't know what will be in the new IMac.

Apple TV Update Kind of Scared

When was the last time Apple really IMPROVED hardware with new updates? All they seem capable of is making things THINNER and LESS functional. I really want a new Apple TV, but knowing those Asshats, they'll remove the firewire and making it WiFi only and I doubt they'll add external HD support which is what I DESPERATELY want.

And they need to do something about streaming. Granted I have a crappy Xfinity Internet, but I don't have many issues streaming Vudu HDX, but Apple TV? It's extremely rare that an HD Stream is even available that alone stable enough for me to watch for more than a few minutes. I constantly get "It will take 4 hours for your content to become available.." WTF?!

There is no 2GB of RAM....

Then there is no reason for me to buy one. I will wait until they fix it. The ipad air is borderline defective at this point due to this. Now if they can figure out how to fix this problem in software that's fine too.

CUDA. people need it for desktop apps and having!. Stop this AMD nonsense!

Actually they don't. It is in your best ineterest to wean yourself off of CUDA because it is a technology that won't be around for long. There are better approaches that aren't proprietary.

In the end you are looking to the past and not seeing where we will be in the futue.

you realize i'm talking about the ipad pro..? not the air 2. i do know that the 12" could well be just a bigger ipad with no 'pro' connotations. but seeing as the 'pro' rumor is out there, i figured i'd address that concept - on mac rumors.

i'm fully aware of the fact that there are tablets out there with full OS capabilities and pressure sensitivity (including a wireless 13" cintiq), but i'm talking about apple. as in, i'd like an iPad Pro. i don't even think apple is entirely willing to let that 'tiny tiny market' (as you seem to imply) slip away to microsoft or samsung - their competitors in mobile computing. which an ipad pro would be.

if one doesn't ever get released, i'd still be willing to bet they're working on one.

And yet in a speed test done by Cult of Android the iPhone 6 spanked the HTC One (M8), which they acknowledged as the (former) speed champion. Take a look at their methodology before you dismiss the test as not being relevant to your concern. It would seem RAM isn't everything when it comes to multitasking. Maybe we need to write to 1Password (I use it, too) and tell them to write better code?

benchmarks don't mean **** when you notice the very real phenomenon of constant page refreshes and lost caches returning to an app or browser from another app. hence the very real desire of many apple users for more RAM. it's not unfair criticism.

Dual TB connectors? Just upgrade the graphics card to one with DisplayPort 1.3 ouput. That's what I'll do on my 2009 MP. ;)

:p
you still won't be able to connect TB SSDs you bring in from a shoot to your precious cheese grinder, no matter how upradable your gpu might be.

Have fun with your USB2 /firewire 800 transfer speeds ;)

Not sure how you expect to address the lack of RAM to deal with both today's ever more loaded webpages and the demands of the retina screen with tweaking Safari or iOS.
Not to mention is that safari is vastly imorived on iOS 8 and even then there are still reload problems. Apple needs to address the RAM problem or I will put off a new iPad. Sad really but I'm not that gullible.

It's mystifying to me that the iPad still runs what is essentially the same GUI that was designed for a 3.5" display. Those huge icons and wide spacing are inexplicable. Lots of room for GUI innovation.

For the next iPad mini, I'd love to see a 400 ppi or higher display similar to that of the 6+. Bump the A8X GPU from four to six cores, add 4GB RAM, and it will eat Android tablets for breakfast.

At 264 ppi, the iPad Air is no longer competitive. It needs over 326 ppi minimum.

Back in the real world, my expectations are that PPI remains unchanged and iPad sales continue to lag.

really? i generally agree with your other points but the ppi is one of the ipad's last 'problems'.. if they wanted drastic change, they'd go AMOLED, but i hope they don't, as the color and contrast is considerably less natural and not as good a representation of the actual file/cotent you're looking at. beautiful mostly, but 'enhanced', so no good for my uses, or anyone else with strict photography/design requirements.

i'm a stickler for higher ppi on my phones, but i think tablets are generally held quite a few inches further away from your eyes than phones are. i may be wrong, but i don't see much room for improvement there until a new viable display tech emerges that apple could capitalize on (...hopefully not amoled)
