People replace TV's so much less frequently than computers.

This is very true.

I really hope they don't just put all these features in their own TV set...

Which is exactly what they would do. Apple isn't really about licensing out stuff. The closest to 'another tv set' you would get is the set top box. But then again, why bother making a tv set at all when the selling point is content and the STB does that just fine.

No we won't. WWDC is a software developers conference so iOS 6 and Mountain Lion are a given. PERHAPS this new Apple TV OS which could just be additional features from iOS that they are turning on for the TV system and not a fresh OS or a 'real tv'

those iPhone details that would be leaked by the developer preview will be mentioned but nothing about the hardware and nothing beyond "fall" or such on a release date. Same as last year.

Same notion with computers. Or we might see an overnight silent drop of the computers depending on the level of change. Frankly I don't really see a major redesign in the works for anything other than perhaps the Mac Pro if it isn't being slowly dropped out. so a silent release for a specs upgrade is how they would go
I could see them announcing new Mac laptops - especially if the Air vs Pro distinction is removed and they just call them MacBooks. It's not like Apple never announced new hardware at WWDC. iPhone 4 was announced at WWDC 2010.

iTV?

Forgive me if I'm not current, but I thought Apple gave up on the name "iTV", because of possible legal issues with the UK network.

So, why would someone use that name if they wanted to lend credence to their story?

I'm not looking to split hairs here, just remembering something when I saw "iTV" in the quotation.

If I were Tim Cook I would take the opportunity to win the hearts af all by using this WWDC as the podium to announce as much as I could....

Deliver a 2 hour+ keynote speech and show it all off!

no parts leak, no os screenshots, i m skeptical about it.

However if there ll be an apple tv it ll be like youtube of today where in anyone can create channel and earn independently, yt is huge thats why apple tv makes sense and content industry is huge.

But as Tim said last night at D10, Apple will not do this with out some compelling value add over the TV we have today

but he also said that Apple has and will continue to turn some things over to those that are doing it better than they can do it themselves. He was talking about manufacturing but I think it applies to products as well.

So what compelling value would there be in Apple creating a real TV versus adding content to their system that can be sold to those with computers, iPads, iPhones, the ATV set box and leaving the TV set to those that are already world known for doing it well.

I see no value in a tv set. A better display line up that has direct HDMI support that could be used as a tv set with your ATV sure, but not a 'smart tv set'

because it's hardware where they make their money, not content? How much profit does Apple make off of the $99 ATV? I'm sure iTunes is making them some money now with their 30% cut of App sales, but in the days of iPod it was basically a break-even business wasn't it?

As evidenced by the huge growth of television series box-sets, the way we view television has changed. Nobody wants to sit through endless hours of advertising and any OS that will allow me to stream content when I want it and how I want it will get my vote. Current on-demand set-top boxes (be it cable or satellite) have the processing power of a very slow Nokia phone from the late 90s. Give me speed and iOS like UI and you can have money

Amen.... I completely agree. This is the main reason we DVR pretty much all our content and watch it a later date and time. I do not want to sit through commercials. The only live programming I watch now a days are usually sports.

Or they could just leave that to Youtube. Then they don't have to deal with the copyright complaints etc.

interface problem has to be solved first, then creating software for marketplace, it ll be in 2013, however they shud release new iphones in my opinion. The current iphone has better competitors.

In the days of the iPod it was a lot smaller content mass. Now who knows. Plus all that content, if it is multi device compatible, does sell hardware. Who cares if the ATV box makes them a mere $1-2 dollars if it leads to someone getting an iPad, then they decide to change their busted up computer from a Dell to a Mac. and so on.

today there is no such freedom in tv industry and very few people can set up companies(tv channel companies), it has to be democratise that is the future, yt is bigger than tv industry bec of this very reason.

However yt is a jarring experience, a thing of tomorow and new innovation can be made there, it ll be different but it ll be huge, otherwise the new device wil be just another tv set dont u think?

pardon my poor english

\It's not like Apple never announced new hardware at WWDC. iPhone 4 was announced at WWDC 2010.

And they dropped that last year. Some folks will tell you it's because there was an issue and they had to delay the release. I say bull. Apple wanted to get off the whole 'outside schedule' thing same as dropping MacWorld and wanted to switch the hardware to the fall to give developers time after the WWDC preview to go to sessions and then go home and update their apps to have ready for the iOS launch with the new hardware etc.

And that is how they will likely do it from now on.

Yes, WWDC used to be a place for hardware announcements. iPhone is now in the holiday update slot so that will not be shown. iPad is too new so that probably won't happen either. And the iPod is relegated to my-first-iPhone so that will never get an event again. (AppleTV is a bit of a wild card.)

When was the last Mac announced at WWDC? It was a big thing when the a Mac update even got an event (Back to the Mac event). If they update the Macbook line up around WWDC I doubt it will be on stage and it will probably just magically show up on the website unless there is some sort of killer feature or hook. The only reason I can see them mentioning new Macs is if they have retina displays and they want the devs to upgrade the graphics on their apps (not because they remove an Air vs Pro distinction). Devs don't need to know the Macbook Pro loses the optical drive but they do need to know what resolution the monitor is at. Even then it would be iffy (the devs seemed to pick up on the iPad retina display pretty fast without a developer convention).

Screenshots are incredibly easy to fake.

Apple never gave up the name because it was never something they were going to use for the actual device. that was just rumor.

But yes iTV network and that trademark was a major part of why they never intended to use the name as anything more than an internal code name

before iphone and multi touch UI introduction people use to laugh at touch screens and things werent that intuitive/great.

apple alleged upcoming tv set has to once again solve some major interface problems that are present in tv of today, possibly improving technologies of today that are joke such as motion control, voice recog etc [courtesy : failure of xbox kinect]

it ll take time, that is why i vote apple tv will be out in 2013

This could easily be an OS that is licensed for 3rd party manufacturers, like Airplay. Most people would be shocked to see Apple have its own branded TV, as that market is tough. Let Toshiba, Sharp, Sony, etc. carry the burden of selling the TVs themselves, and let Apple take $100 in licensing fees per set.

It's about time somebody though of this, having multiple remotes is a stupid thing, remote for TV, remote for Apple TV, remote for cable box, remote for DVD/Blu-ray player, etc...

Now all these new Smart TVs doesn't look all that smart, eh?

u must have a ****** tv, i can control all those with my iPad already

always remember the phone companies prior iphone, innovation does bring change and influence market, even create new opportunities/possibilities.

They used to announce hardware... Mac Pro and iPhones :)

Seems like a lot to be releasing at WWDC.

iOS 6, OSX Mountain Lion, New MacBook Pros, new iMacs, and now the Apple TV set (or just it's OS)?

No way we're going to get all of these things at once.

+1

Apple controls its messaging far too well to allow so many new products to distract from one another once the press starts writing about the announcements.

Not saying these things aren't all happening this year, but if Apple demos an iTV OS, that'll be the only story that gets published, and while they may be fine with a quiet release for new Macs, they won't let iOS 6 get swept under the rug.
