I like to dream too!

Two new sizes in the iMac lineup. Sounds promising.
Hoping for a 30" or 32" inch iMac with 6 core cpu, usb3.0, thunderbolt and 4k resolution screen!

And prey tell what 6 core chip will they put in this beast - particularly since no 6 core Ivy Bridge chips actually exists.

Basically, they will need to put an i7 Sandy Bridge Extreme in - two choices of this chip - both give off a large amount of heat.

As for 4K LCD's - what's the point given 4K technology is about a decade away for the consumer - or do you think in your imagination million's of persons with HD LCD TV's will swap these for Apple Branded 4K devices at about US$5,000 a go.

Also, and having just seen the repair bill for my 2011 27in iMac - US$600, do you really think its good value to purchase equipment you don't need at a stupid price point, with a warranty that only lasts a maximum of 3 years - it must be nice to be rich, you are mad, or you are just having a laugh - I hope its the latter!!!!!!

False. When you reduce a transistor's size you reduce both the voltage needed and the capacitance. Scale a transistor down by a factor of 2 and you reduce the power per transistor by a factor of 8. The power usage per unit area is therefore actually reduced by a factor of 2, not increased. Since you've reduced the power per unit area, you can then increase clocks speeds and still stay within the same power budget. This is the basic reason computers have gotten so much faster over the past few decades: more transistors at higher clock speeds without turning your desktop into a nuclear furnace.

I can't speak for Ivy Bridge temperatures, but chips with the same performance of Sandy Bridge have lower TDPs -- exactly as you'd expect with a move from 32nm to 22nm. And less power should mean less heat.

Well, almost. You are mostly correct here, but there are a lot of other factors involved. For example, thinner gate oxide layers contribues to leakage currents (sub threshold currents), and also, increasingly, you will need to factor in effects from transmission lines and parasitic capacitances from transmission lines and on the transistor terminals.

Doing some simple math, basicly we have E = Q*Vdd = (CL*dV)*Vdd drawn to charge the output node of a CMOS inverter, which is converted into heat (resistive losses). Psw = f*Vdd*Vdd*(switching)*C.

My point is that it is misleading to state that shrinking transistors gives you higher frequencies and lower power dissipation. While this is mostly true (or have been so far), we need to look at other factors as well. If we were to look at a diagram depicting the timeline from 1960 - 2012 and draw lines for #transistors, frequency and power dissipation, we would find that the power line is much steeper than the #transistors line. You can probably read more about it by googling "CPU Power Wall".

This is how it will go down hardware wise me thinks:
...
No mac pro announcements.
NOoooooooooo! My 2006 Macpro1,1 needs to be replaced with a 16 core monster this year!! There's no way I'm getting an iMac... :(

If you want to use OS X, you must use Apple hardware.

Nothing tops random anonymous people telling strangers what they "must" do.

I built a hackintosh a couple years ago, way better option for me than anything Apple was selling at the time or since. Hopefully they'll finally remedy that with these updates.

A hackintosh isn't really the same though.

I could go for that. Too bad I have a late 2011 15" that isn't going anywhere any time soon.

And? My box works great and has had no compatibility issues. As long as it does a great job running the software I need to run, I couldn't care less if it's "not really the same".

Sorry but wouldn't you use the new one as a server since its faster and the old one as a personal computer (even though the old one will still be bitchingly fast)

Seeing as my server doesn't need that much power, and seeing as how my current Mac Pro is sluggish from time to time, I think I'll go with the new one as a desktop :)

Part of me thinks it would be great if they update the Mac Pro line. I am hoping for more than a processor bump. Maybe a form factor revision as well? If that is the case it may be the last new mac product we see that Jobs had any influence over. Because I am sure that a refresh of the Mac Pro's would have been months if not over a year in the making.
OTOH we did just buy 6 brand new maxed out Mac Pros. Max ram, max CPU config etc. The graphics dept is gonna be pissed.

I'm looking iMac not Mac pro. What about for that? What would the release ETAs look like for that?

Well we now have seen June 18th dates for the Mac Pro being in stock so I guess within the next 2 weeks they will have all the new Macs available :).

30"+ 4K monitors are in the $30,000-$50,000 price range. They will not be coming to the consumer market in the near future for affordable prices. 6-core CPUs currently run in the 130W TDP range and are not suitable for iMacs.

Apple. There's no need to update the Mac Pro.
No one I know uses one.
Just let the Mac Pro die already!!!!

Well, I have a pile of 8 Mac Pro G5's that recently got replaced with newer Mac Pros. Art dept here got top of the line 12 core with SSD.
It is kind of hard to fathom for folks that don't work in broadcast or post but even a maxed out Mac Pro is just barely adequate for a lot of the work we do.
There are serious discussions about going over to $25k HP workstations with a Hackintosh OS, just so we can get stuff out faster.

They tried that in the 90's. I owned a Motorola Starmax clone. It nearly killed the company. They brought back SJ, and Bill Gates put in money to keep them afloat. SJ killed the clones immediately.

the problem with the clones was that Apple let Power Computing, Starmax and others get away with having cheaper AND more powerful systems. That left Mac only to distinguish itself by how cool it's boxes looked. Which back then, meant a losing game. Those old powerpc macs are fugly!

Apple had some real idiots running the company back then.

The market that buys the current 13 inch MacBook Pro will buy the 13 inch MacBook air. I fully expect the Pro to be discontinued.

I guess you never find it useful to have firewire, thunderbolt, USB and ethernet, at the same time.
All of the web team at my work has 13" MBPs. They use all the ports, all the time. They dont want 15" MBP's because they dont fit on airplane tray tables well, and the extra pound actually matters to some.

I would make the contention that for those that buy the current MBA, an ipad with a BT keyboard is cheaper and just as handy.

If no Retina, it's not great improvement by just change the CPU. I hope MBP has Retina, then apple will defeat other laptop.

It's nice to see MacRumors actually posting Mac rumors once again.

MacRumors said:
If Apple is planning to only update four of its lines, the final spot would come down to the Mac mini and the Mac Pro…
Apple bringing back the Mac Pro is like Netflix bringing back Arrested Development. I won't believe it until it's in my possession. Until then, the Mac Pro is still dead to me.

Given the recent news about hardware announcements, it looks like they're going to have to talk REALLY FAST!!!!

Don't they normally have a hands on showroom for new product?

So Tim could just wrap up with "one more thing"..."all new mac's released tomorrow and in the showroom for you to check up now."
