Stop debating, face it guys, its a stupid idea and hard to implement, and people wipe their bums with that newspaper, thats how reliable it is, the "Sun" makes up stories just to get hits.

lol another example of Big Brother (er, Big Apple) in this case, to control YOUR phone that YOU bought with YOUR hard earned money.

Uncle Jobs comin to get ya!

Absolutely bonkers if they are trying to pull this off !
I am an Apple diehard and would ditch the lot if they even try this .

when you buy the ticket it says "NO RECORDING OF THIS EVENT" so this is Apples way of providing the venue the ability to block people from illegally recording it

so these infrared sensors are already used by mainstream concert promoters?
No, as it's not, apparently, simply some standard signal. At the very least some kind of apple black box would be needed. If they do it.

This is just like the Movie Theatre's jamming cell phones so they can't ring or be used while the movie is playing
What theaters do that?
That would be like saying "We are turning off the EXIT signs to make sure they don't distract from the movie, as well as the low-light step strips. I hope nothing happens that requires you to leave before we bring the lights up!"

Of course, the catch is...

As lifeguard points out, if people wouldn't break the rules, it would never of been proposed.

Come on guys, how many times do MacRumors themselves run stories about uncovered Apple patents that never see the light of day?

This patent is from 18 months ago!

And The Sun is cheaper and nastier than Asda Price toilet roll ... it's read by people with the IQ of a pre-school child. Gutter trash reporting at it's best, who never allow facts to get in the way of a good scandal.

Turning off the exit signs would be a safety issue. Your cell phone not ringing and disturbing everyone because you ignored the 15 minute lecture to turn it off is NOT A safety issue.

The same as hiding fire exits?

How old are you?

When I was a kid we didn't have cell phones and I can assure you that none of us dropped dead in the middle of a movie because of it.

STOP

This is not happening, it's simply sensationalist rumor-mongering. You know when you should complain? If it actually happens. Until then peddle nonsense somewhere else instead of doing the Apple-haters work for them.

Except this place is called MacRUMORS for a reason. If you don't like it, then perhaps youcould look at a different forum.

Back on topic, I do believe that this idea is plausible, but not necessarily right.

And what about bands that allow and even encourage gig-taping?

Venues are notorious for not respecting the band's taping policy, frequently confiscating gear from and refusing entry to fans who have permission to tape.

Such will be the case with this. Venues will either refuse or "forget" to turn off the IR boxes, because they're all part of the Clear Channel monopoly.

Proof positive, once again, that Apple has no respect for artists.

So you can't think of anything that might happen where you might need to call 911?

I claim the right to over-exaggerate in support of my arguments!

I'm just saying that, for various reasons, one might need to make phone call (what if a woman goes into birth early? There are valid reasons where one might need to use a cell phone.)

The venue would have to implement this technology as well so I don't think I'm that concerned right now. Plus the venue lets you know if they allow photography or not, and if they do, likely they won't try shutting off your iPhone cameras ;)

Eitherway, I'll just use my Samsung. Much better camera anyways,

Maybe someone will create a case to prevent cameras being shut off .

Its not the venues place to say whether or not taping is allowed.

That's for the band to decide, and many bands do permit taping/photography.

This thread is still going on and growing? Really? Wow.

Ok, first off it is NOT illegal to record a concert. There is no law written that prohibits you from recording. The ticket stub may say this as a rule/part of the contract you agree to by using the ticket, but they cannot arrest you as it is not against the law. They can remove you from the concert if they wish.

Secondly, movie theaters in the USA cannot jam any cellular signal. In fact, only the Federal gov't has this authority. Even states do not have this right. They are attempting to allow prisons and such to jam cell signals to prevent inmates from using smuggled smart phones. But as of June 2011, it is still illegal for states, citizens, etc. to use jamming equipment.

No duh, but in my case I prefer to comment on rumors that are about things that are happening or might happen, using logic and reason. This isn't one of them. It's stupid to keep pushing this idea the way the anti-Apple folks want.

interesting concept, but it would be pretty easy to thwart. Just put your phone in airplane mode, this way the 'sensors' cannot contact your phone and disable the camera. Not sure how it would contact the phone though.

It's a mix of the event promoter/sponsor/whatever, the venue, and the group(s) actually performing.

Although most venues stay out of it, I do know of some that maintain a no photography/videography policy no matter what.

Of course, if an act and a venue can't agree, then they tend not to work together.

I would say that's true for many people over a multitude of things...

I mean, would you care about some new regulation about underwater basket weaving if you never partake? Thought not

I totally agree!

I love basket weaving. What regulations are they putting on it now?;)

No, it isn't.

It's not the venue's IP that is being taped. So they should have no say in the matter.

The artist alone has the right to make that call and nobody else. Not Clear Channel, not Apple, NOBODY.
