why does everything apple have done lately just bore the living crap out of me.

I used to get excited about upcoming product rumors, now I just get annoyed.

I think its just technology across the board. We have a lot of tech now so its getting harder to make WoW factor stuff.

Where do I go to start exchanging my iPhone 7 until I get a Sony camera instead of an LG camera?

Will I be able to tell which one is which via the serial number on the box?

Chris Chang of Nomura Securities has issued a note to investors claiming that Sony may be running behind schedule in terms of supplying Apple with dual-lens camera modules for the next-generation 5.5-inch iPhone, which rumors suggest may be called the iPhone 7 Plus or iPhone Pro.Chang believes that Apple will instead turn to LG as its primary supplier of dual-lens camera modules for the larger-sized iPhone expected to launch in September.

Both investment bank Nomura Securities and research firm Citi Research believe all 5.5-inch iPhones will be equipped with dual-lens camera modules, rather than just one model, echoing comments made by KGI Securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo earlier this month.

Kuo previously said that Apple had two 5.5-inch versions of the iPhone 7 Plus in development, including one with a single iSight rear-facing camera and another boasting a dual-lens camera module, but he has since recanted. Meanwhile, the 4.7-inch iPhone 7 is widely expected to retain a single-lens camera.

Nomura Securities also believes that Apple will include optical image stabilization (OIS) on both the 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch iPhone, whereas the feature has been exclusive to the larger iPhone 6 Plus and iPhone 6s Plus over the past two generations.

Leaked images, components, and renders potentially offer a first look at Apple's dual-lens camera system, but rumors have been conflicting about the exact design.

The switch to dual-lens camera modules has been linked to Apple's acquisition of LinX Technology, which could lead to "DSLR-quality" photos on iPhones. LinX's multi-aperture cameras are also smaller sized than single-aperture cameras, meaning the iPhone 7 Plus could have a slightly less protruding camera lens.

LinX camera modules offer a number of other benefits, including 3D depth mapping, better color accuracy and uniformity, ultra HDR, low noise levels, higher resolution, low costs, zero shutter lag, and a compact design that allows for edge-to-edge displays. A recent video demo provides a good overview of dual-camera technology.

Apple recently patented a dual-camera system consisting of one standard wide-angle lens, similar to what is found in the latest iPhones, and a second telephoto lens capable of capturing zoomed-in video and photos. In a recent video, we visualized what the interface could look like on future iOS devices.

Dual-camera smartphones like the Huawei P9 and P9 Plus are expected to inspire "killer apps" from smartphone manufacturers and third-party developers.

Forget the number of lenses that thing's as big as a snow board !!

I'm an American. Americans love choices. Humans love choices. If I have to choose between 3 mediocre models in 4 colors with 3 storage sizes or one really good one, I'll choose the really good one every time, even if I sacrifice my personal favorite screen size.

Besides, screen size may not matter much in a few years after the Apple Watch develops further.

One thing Jobs was great at was cutting away all of the fat and focusing all resources on what was most important - making great products that change people's daily lives.

If sacrificing those choices means I get a cutting edge and stable product again, I am all for it.
So... if they make base model with an A10 chip, and 2GB of RAM for $650, and a "Pro" model with A10X Chip, 3GB of RAM for $750, you just assume the base model isn't "stable" or "cutting edge?" Once again... Why take away choices from consumers? It works fine for their Mac lineup. You can buy Mabook Pros with all sorts of screen sizes, and CPU/RAM choices. No one has a problem with that. I think people are just getting a bit salty that the iOS devices are starting to head this route. Getting upset that their $650 won't get them the same specs (speed and performance wise) as the $1000 models anymore.

This is a great example except for one thing..."mediocre" and "really good" aren't always what you think they are. What's mediocre to an American like you might be really good to an American like me, and vice versa. So who decides? I'd rather get three choices and I'll decide what's best for me.

Steve Jobs used to decide and he was pretty good at it.

Now that Steve is gone, obviously Apple can't decide so they are vomiting products at us with a shotgun approach.

The really important/difficult thing is to decide what not to do, rather than what to do.

Stability is in relation to the software running rock solid on the hardware. They are releasing so many hardware options the stability has seemed to go down.

Cutting edge is two fold - the hardware used compared to the industry, and the actual effect it has on the product.

If they are going the route of pro models, at least give all spec options for all screen sizes like their notebooks or iPads (almost there).

Besides, who the hell uses an iPhone for pro photography anyways?!

In reality, if the iPhones stayed ahead of the industry as far as innovation, no one would be talking about wasting time with screen sizes, colors, and storage options. Apple could release phones with custom colors for all I care as long as the innovation is still there.

Lucky for us, they have some promising tech in the iPhone pipeline, we just have to wait for it to mature and be released to market.

Actually this is what Apple used to do up until the iPhone 5. Then everybody started crying for bigger phones, so Apple accommodated them. Then people started crying for smaller phones, and Apple accommodated them. See where I'm going with this?

Consider yourself lucky to be an Apple user. If deciding between three different phones is a chore for you, you'd have a really hard time deciding from the thirty different models that each competitor makes available.

I hope it doesn't look that ugly in final production.
I hope you also think the iPhone 6 is ugly because the leak is not significantly different from that except that it has none of the "ugly antenna bands" that everyone complained about before.

Or maybe it's the pill-shaped camera lens. I don't know how Apple could possibly put out a product with a shape like that.

Do you think the following actually looks better, with the same off-aligned camera from the 6 series and another slapped on?

Please tell.

I think this is internet 2016. I actually like all technology I just choose to use an iPhone as it works for me. What gets out of hand is the this vs that conversations.

No, there's been hatred towards non-apple products for over a decade. Remember the lawsuit Apple was involved in against Creative over the iPod? Tons of hysteria over that... I remember it well.

I'm just prepping for the threads comparing the Sony- and LG-manufactured lenses once people realize that they have one or the other. We all remember the Samsung/THSC SoC "fiasco".

I wonder if Apple's supply issues is what is potentially preventing the standard size iPhone from getting the dual-camera set up. That's super unfortunate for people who want the latest features, but not the larger iPhone size.

i bet there will be future threads like that samsung vs tsmc one.. this time people trying to swap for sony sensors

I hope it doesn't look that ugly in final production.

Just wait until you see the official photos, you'll be stunned...or maybe not this time.

Yeah, I doubt Apple would withhold a feature that could prevent them from having dismal sales (possibly) this year unless there was a shortage of components.

I'd take ugly if the camera performs as well as hoped. Further if they manage to embedded a real optical zoom in to the iPhone they can make that bump as big as the belly on a welfare chick and i'd buy it.

Yep. That's how it works. The fancy camera IS the deal maker for me, but by catering to me, they may leave you behind.

I like it better when they cater to me.

Unfortunately, if you buy an 5.5" iP, you are in the minority of new model iP purchasers. Apple can't afford to shoehorn lots of flagship features into a form factor that quite a significant proportion of their customers don't want. The way I see it is that they're implementing it in the device with a smaller userbase, improving it, then releasing it on the phone people actually buy, (eg. OIS). The major reason for putting it into the + is simply utilisation of additional space (and margins, but if the MacRumours articles are anything to go by on component price, that's less of an issue).

Also, you can't just say, 'Well I prefer the 5.5" and so do lots of people blah blah anecdotal evidence inserted here blah blah'. IIRC, the split was 80/20 a couple of months after the iP6 launch.

Do you remember the iPhone 6 leaks?

Owh come on, the iP6 is a really ugly design when compared to the Slate Grey 5. I used to take that out of its case to clean it and leave it out for a couple of days because it was so darn cute.

Getting sick of all this fragmentation. Hoping they don't go this route. Can we just get one really awesome iPhone model and call it a day?
Actually you can't. The problem is Apple and its partners can not instantly ramp up new technology, so Apple targets the high end lower volume machine for the advanced technology. This isn't like having a CPU made that can be manufactured on the same line everyone else hardware is built on. A camera module like this will require specialized tooling that simply takes time to perfect.
This is a tech company, not a clothing company. Adding color and size options is just a distraction for stalled innovation.

Baloney! Every single iPhone to date has made considerable strides over previous models. Think about the quality or lack there of in the early models, the slow processors and buggy versions of IOS (or whatever they called it back then). Apple has made huge strides in the iOS devices ecosystem which is rather sophisticated these days.

Great, the last thing a drunk, nude selfie taking Kim Kardashian needs is a dual lens camera.

The only reason nobody complains about Kim's nudies is that her a$$ is too big for you to see anything.

So... once again... stop fragmenting a line, confusing the consumer, and just make EVERY iPhone model a 'Pro' model. Consistency, standardisation, and quality. At their core, (pardon the pun), that's what Apple have done best.
I'm willing to bet that you vote for a democrat overtime you are in the voting booth! You want to take choice away from everybody and force the world to accept your view of what is acceptable.
Would you prefer different iterations of OS X too?
What does OS X have to do with it. If you are talking about hardware Apple offers lots of choices and frankly they have too because peoples needs vary. Some need the ultra portability of the Mac Book while others have trouble getting work done with a maxed out MBP

I really don't understand the mentality of people that want to dictate to the entire world what is acceptable. Sad really.
[doublepost=1463785585][/doublepost]
All I see is YOY decline in sales. I'm sure as heck not upgrading for an additional lens on my camera, and I cannot be the only one.

You upgrade for the total package not one feature. Besides do you update your Mac every year? I can tell you I don't upgrade my iPhone every year as it is just wasteful.
[doublepost=1463785854][/doublepost]
So infuriating that they are limiting features like this to the larger size only. There's just no reason why they have to do that, and it cuts off a huge portion of Apple users from having the phone that they want by making it impossible to obtain (small size, great camera )

Having been involved in more that one product ramp up over the years I can honestly say you don't know what you are talking about. Brand new manufacturing technology does not happen instantly and is why manufactures always target high value low volume products first. It happens in every industry.

In this case the rumor explicitly highlights an issue with yields, among other things. Eventually these sorts of things get ironed out and you are able to service the larger market.

Honestly, when was the last time anyone remembers looking at (admiring) the backside of their phone?

Yes, when we take it out of the box when we buy it, but WTF is all this bruhaha about what the back of the phone might look like? Most (careful) people put their phone in a case anyway. Very odd.

More so a cheap ugly rubber case that ends up stained from sweat.

to be honest the whole dual lens camera idea sounds like a desperate attempt to pretend there is innovation..
that picture and design if real looks disgusting.if its real and Ive designed it,it means his days are over, time for retirement from design.IT'S VERY UGLY.

As a photographer who shoots with my 6+ everyday, I'm stoked about the camera possibilities. Could not care less about what the back looks like - something I don't see with a case which I always use. Also, I suspect the next phone will have the much better display tech that's used in the 9.7" iPad Pro.
