Is no one else bothered there is no way to get back to Home? Depending on how you navigate you can find yourself hitting menu 10 times just to toggle between tv and movies. A simple swipe up to show the top bar seems like it would fix it. I'm a bit surprised no one else has an issue.

Plex is pretty much useless for watching movies. Takes ages to start it and still starts buffering after 30 minutes or so. SimpleX is better at starting the movie, but still starts buffering after a while.

Streaming from a 5K iMac, and no problems with the WiFi.

That's very strange. Have you tried multiple movies / files / formats? I've been using it heavily since it launched on Apple TV, all sorts of files ranging anywhere from 1GB to 20GB, different types of audio, and rarely ever see any buffering at all. This is all streaming from a 4 year old Mac mini which is pulling media from an old and relatively slow NAS (Sinology DS411j).

This annoys me quite a bit too.

i'm not a fan of the official plex app's UI either.

skipping around is also pretty chunky and sometimes doesn't work at all. this is over 802.11ac, i have yet to try wired. this is not an issue with the osx desktop client so i can't imagine it has anything to do with the plex server or streaming format.

i also have yet to try any third-party clients.

I'm trying to weigh up whether or not it's worth paying for the premium Plex Pass thing. The main thing for me would be the trailers and extras. How does it work, are these automatically added to movies you have in your library? Are there a lot of extras?

Do I have to have a media server running to use plex? I don't want to have a computer always running to access my movies. Can plex just find media on a hard drive attached to a AirPort Extreme?

Plex offers an option called "cloud sync" that stores files in Dropbox or other cloud services, but otherwise you need a computer running plex media server. A computer could be a compatible nas or raspberry Pi....

Gotta say, I'm not having much luck with Plex at this point. To me, the whole point is to have an app that will play the h.264 BR rips I have on an HDD connected to my AEBS and let Plex do the audio transcode. I have tried LOTR-EE and it plays horribly, stuttering and buffering with slight video tearing artifacts. MY AEBS and media server are in the same room as the aTV and wifi signal is strong.

It plays my Handbrake transcoded mp4's fine but then, the only thing Plex provides over iTunes is a pretty interface, nice to have but what I am looking for is something that can play the uncompressed BR rips.

Edit: I should add that the mkv's I trying to play have DTS audio, so Plex is still having to transcode the audio.

The bottleneck in your setup may be the isn port on the router... Why don't you try hooking it up to a proper computer and see if that helps?

FINALLY!
I picked up a 2012 Mac mini this weekend and now have a dedicated PMS...I couldn't be happier! Everything functions perfectly and the UI simple enough that even my wife was impressed. As the title of this thread says Plex+ATV4=Bliss.

I've used a Mac mini running both PMS server and client for years and this is paired with a Logitech harmony remote and remote buddy. I recently got an ATV4 and have to say the Plex client is....well very crap compared to the Mac native Plex client. Navigation is extremely limited in the app as is filtering. Having to press the "reload" tab at the top right just to update the home page is also circa 1997.

I really like my ATV4 but for anyone who's used a Plex client on a Mac mini the atv app is VERY very basic and hopefully they'll re-write if from scratch.

I agree, the ATV4 Plex app is very limited and bland compared with the full fledged native OSX client.. however the convenience of not having to have 2 Mac Minis connected to my TVs anymore outweighs this for me (I've since sold off my Mini's and just have ATV4's). Whilst it doesn't look as good aesthetically through the menus etc, I can still watch all of my media on the one tiny device, and haven't had any issues whatsoever.

I also get a little annoyed at the reload button too, that should be automatic. I'm hoping the Plex client for ATV was just a rush job in order to get it out and working... and that they'll improve the UI later on!

My setup is QNAP TS453-Pro NAS for media storage, with PMS server running on my iMac (Late '13, i7 3.5, 16GB). NAS is connected to router directly (CAT6), as is one ATV. The other ATV and my iMac are connected via EoP 600Mbps powerline injectors.. no buffer/streaming issues or anything like that! (Yes I did look into having my NAS as the PMS however decided against it.. my iMac is left on anyway for remote access to various other services, so didn't make a big difference to me.)

Will Plex on the ATV4 play movies purchased through iTunes if they are on my Mac that is in the Kitchen??
