This appears to hit directly between the eyes my #1 hatred of app style TV. If I don't use the FX app for a few weeks I have to completely redo my passwords. That is becoming a deal breaker for the future of tv. It's the biggest pain in the ass. You settle in content to watch Fargo or Its always sunny and BOOM please renter your information... WHY!?!

So this new AppleTV is Bluetooth capable, why no support for Bluetooth keyboards? All that potentional for text entry with apps that can be made for this thing, (imagine a version of Word for AppleTV) yet you can't use a keyboard? Not even if it was just an Apple supported keyboard? Seems as big an oversight as no 4K support. Am I wrong?

Perhaps I missed something, but didn't they fail to mention that the new Apple TV also just happens to be a lot more expensive than the old one?

Apple TV version 3 $69 (US)
Apple TV version 4 (32gb) $149 (US)
Apple TV version 4 (64gb) $199 (US)

At over twice the price, at better be a heck of a lot better.

The old one was $99 for a very long time, before falling to $79, and then $69 when the TV 4th Gen was announced. Its the equivalent of the 5s being $450 contract free but the 6s being $650 contract free. Apple keeps older hardware around and sells it for less.

Searches on MacRumors and Google are turning up nothing, same for the Apple Developer forums are also turning up nothing on the subject. Thanks for being helpful.

It's mentioned in the main article, referring to the Verge review.

The line from the full review "Tim Cook says a Siri search API is coming, but I get the feeling Apple wants Siri search to be a differentiator for the more premium services, so we’ll see how wide open that API is when it gets here."

Man there are some real head scratchers with this box. No 4K support even though iPhone 6s can record it. No universal sign in for content apps that require cable/satellite subscription. Siri can't search apps or Apple Music. Hardly any big name apps available at launch. There's not much in Eddy Cue's world that gives me a lot of confidence. He needs to step it up in a big way or step aside and let someone else take over.

Yes you are. 4k support isn't there yet. US Broadband can't reliably stream 4k, the market share for 4k capable devices isn't there (depending where you look, between .5% and 2%), and 4k content is lacking currently.
So basically Apple needs a reason for you to buy a new one in two years.

No Siri and worse grid layout of letters for input for most of the world. Zoom, that is the empty sound that goes in the head for the developer who thought this out.

The order changed to Preparing for Shipment just before these reviews came out. What a coincidence.. Now my only choice is to return it if it doesn't live up to Apple's promise.

Luckily I chose the 32GB version as I couldn't find any reason to pay the extra $50 for storage.

It boggles my mind. It really does.

This damn thing isn't even released yet, the App Store Hasn't gone live and the review units are still technically in beta, yet everyone is admonishing a device that hasn't even stretched a toe, let alone a leg.

FFS people, these problems are easily fixable, it might not be immediate but being an early adopter always has growing pains.

They've loaded this baby with a ton of hardware and the potential for amazing features, but in order for those to work we need to let this device get out there and running.

I agree some things will be frustrating and will probably drive us crazy for a few months after its release.

But you know what I also know? How long it took for even a fraction of my apps to get updated for the 6+. Crap, UP didn't get larger screen support for a literal year. New devices and big changes are slow, we are on the cutting edge of not a refresh, but a redesign.

Name me one brand new OS that we couldn't write novels about the problems of, there isn't if it involves any level of complexity. I think about my first gen iPad with iOS 3 and good lord, looking back it is astonishing how bad it is in comparison. But look at it now, in 5 years we have seen massive refinements that have turned it into something that's a joy to use.

My ATV has been one of the most used pieces of tech I have owned to date. It's used multiple times a day, sometimes as a glorified screen saver, but to AirPlay pics and videos, no other interface (God the YouTube connection between the app and my bluray player is garbage, I hate it) can match. Navigation is better on most streaming services (have you guys used the Netflix interface on a Wii/360? Yes it's pretty but God it's ugly.)

It just works. I wish it could natively stream my various media files like my current jailbroken ATV can do, but with an App Store and the promise of infuse/Plex/whatever, I know something will work.

It's not cheap. It's bigger. But it's something new and different. At this point, Apple has done pretty well, and while it may not be as revolutionary as we'd like, I can assure you those saying "give it time" are going to come across a lot more sane than the incessant naysayers will.

The omission of optical audio out is a deal breaker. I just don't want to upgrade my A/V stack to support this right now.

Really too bad, I would've been totally on board for day 1.

That said, if Elgato ever gets around to putting an Eye TV app on it I may be forced to drop some money on a new HDMI capable receiver.

I was a little disappointed about the loss of the optical audio.

But there are some relatively cheap adapters to get optical audio on Amazon. like $20-30. Cheaper than a new receiver.

I decided to just change the set up on my system. ATV4->HDMI->TV->optical->receiver.

A downside of this is that I lose the ability to play the ATV sound with the TV off. And I also know that not everyone's TV has a optical out.

But there are good options if you do not want to upgrade your sound system.

So basically Apple needs a reason for you to buy a new one in two years.

So many cable providers struggle with getting good quality 1080p through their sets, 4K is coming but it's still sadly more than 2 years away. The tech is sketchy at best currently, and there are a lot of inconsistencies with true 4K. Crap, you can barely buy anything 4k at any store right now, people are just getting comfy with finally having a 1080p device, it was only within the last 7 or so years that owning an HDTV became really reasonable in price, and they're now dirt cheap. So when you're on the market for a new tv, do you spend $2500 on a 4k tv which won't have any native content or games available for a while yet or do you buy the really good quality 1080p tv for about, or maybe less, than a grand?

Apple realizes the sliver of 4K adopters aren't their market, Apple isn't in the business of handing out things that can't be fully leveraged when they're released. And when they do (*cough iPad 3 cough*) it's never beneficial. So why do that here when it offers them almost no benefit?

Or if you have a receiver that supports hdmi pass through, the easiest solution is a splitter, $10 and youve got a passive 3-way splitter that has worked for me for years.

This is so annoying. I think it might be a form of security to reduce people from sharing cable sub accounts. I could be wrong.

The one basic thing the device must do is have a good HMI, take away the Siri and make the grid and the basic input of letter that is left worse, you are left with a bigger issue than single apps take time to get up to date.

I am positive this will be corrected soon but during this outcome we are left with struggling with our input to do anything more than click.

I'm pretty sure Apple will be updating the OS to allow for more features just like iOS.
