How do you review a product that still doesn't have it main feature turned on as yet: tvOS AppStore?

The reviews all seem rather positive. Sort of surprised by that even without a full featured App Store. But they all seem to know what's coming down the line.

I have a silly question. I haven't used an Apple TV since the first one. Can iTunes movies be downloaded and locally cached/stored?

App Store is live like I said! And they picked roku over Apple TV also. Guess it's not just me!
I guess you pulled that from this paragraph:

"For the rest of us, it's a tough call whether it's worth the money to buy now. Roku offers a better value today with its cheaper hardware, price-centric search and direct access to Amazon. The Amazon Fire TV has plenty of games, and the Nvidia Shield is arguably an even more powerful gaming device with appeal to techy types. But none of those devices is as sleek and satisfying as the new Apple TV, and none has the upside and potential of Apple's development community."

If so, you're trying too hard.

I shared hours before that article was published! Look at the times! Just 2 honest thoughts that are very similar. Listen, I really do hope everyone enjoys the new Apple TV! I really do!

They all seem to like it. And it's before the App Store is even fully underway.

Just curious, what are some apps you've made?
I work with a group of developers! And that has nothing to do with this conversation.

Until studios and networks are ready to change their lucrative model and Allow players like Apple to step into the ring. All streaming boxes will be relegated to "over the top" status.

I wasn't expecting Apple to change the world in the tv space. This industry is notoriously slow to change. They hold all the keys and are guarding every door to the content we watch. Apple, Google, Amazon, Roku and the like are all the same. If/when Apple's live tv package come out... That will be what separates them from their competition.

I disagree. Live sports and news are the only cards left in the old guard's hand these days. The networks are scared out of their wits by the popularity and prowess of the new era content makers.

Within the next decade, I expect to see a consolidation/dissolution of the 3 major US networks, with either a takeover by a Netflix/Amazon type entity, or a buyup of Netflix sized studios by an amalgamated supernetwork (or maybe even Apple). Of course Amazon will not be for sale...

Um, you were the one who brought it up. I believe you said you've been developing Apple apps for 7 years now? You also said this device was a "nightmare" to develop for. You implied that no one would develop apps for it because it would be unprofitable.

Presumably you cited your 7 years of experience developing Apple apps to lend credibility to your critiques. So you're surprised we would ask about it?

There's literally no way to know how profitable apps on the Apple TV AppStore will be. Although, even if it ends up only selling as well as Apple TV has so far in its life. That's still a potential customer base of millions of people. Doesn't sound too bad to me.

And as I said earlier, I really don't understand where the difficulty to develop bit is coming from. On the whole it's really not, no more difficult than making apps for iPhone/iPad. Of course I've only been doing that for 5 years, so what do I know.

Nice to see the majority of the reviews I've read so far have been positive.

What about photos app on Apple TV 4?

I'm searching for a cool way to share my photos library (photos app) with my panasonic TV. My library is stored in a external hard drive connected to my macbook.
Anyone know if I will be able to share my library directaly to my photos app on Apple TV?
This is what will decide if I'm a Apple TV 4 buyer or not... :p

Everything I said 2 days ago are coming exactly the way I stated! I got bashed because I gave honest reviews of the device and now almost every post is a negative one! I tried to let people know this was far from polished but everyone jumped on me and said I could eat crow. Who's eating it now?

You are 100% correct and i apologize for calling you a troll, this thing is a mess. First how can Apple just take away the podcast app without a replacement? no radio app for local stations anymore, the ones int he store are crap, speaking of the store that is joke but i can live with that for now if it were not for other things. It screwed up airplay. The screensavers shows the same order of pics everything. My Bluetooth headphones are not recognized, ones i just bought this month. I could go on

No big deal. I apologize also if I did offend you or anyone because I was honestly just trying to help. Just give it time, it will improve! Maybe 3 months or so but it will get better if they let developers get more involved.

The potential is there. It's just getting Apple to be open minded is the problem at the moment. HOPEFULLY they will learn and open this thing up because their are really good developers who just won't mess with it at the moment because of Apple current stance of our developers are better than anyone else's. Be positive, it will improve!

I am sure it will improve but i only have 2 weeks to return it and right now it does not do what i want and what i was able to do with previous generations, i don't have any choice but to return it

To be honest, if you don't develop I would keep your Apple tv3 and purchase a used roku 3 for 40-50 bucks and return the new Apple TV. That's the safest play at this time. Then reevaluate in a few months. That's what I would suggest and have to coworkers etc. Roku is a solid device and so is the Apple 3 so use those until this gets ironed out! Good luck buddy!

At the moment the photos app only seems to work with iCloud shared libraries. However, you can use HomeShare on your MacBook in iTunes to share your entire collection from the Photos app on OS X and access it via the Computers app on the Apple TV.
