I’m tempted to get one. The Siri remote for my AppleTV 4K just died. I plug it in, get no charge notification notice and no amount of time on a known working charger seems to do anything. Might as well upgrade for an improved remote and move the existing 4K to the master bedroom. My wife and I can use our phones as a remote. Anybody know if the new remote can be purchased individually and connected to the older 4K model? I thought I read that you can but I don’t know for sure. If anybody has any idea about what I might try to get the existing remote to work again let me know. Is it possible to replace the battery or once it’s done (if that’s the problem) or do you have to buy a new one? At the end of the day even though the iPhone works fine to control it I’d like to have a remote too if possible. #OldFashioned

The new remote supports all other Apple TV HD/4K so you can get it or find a cheaper price on a same remote probably around $30 on eBay vs $60 2nd gen new remote.

Just because everything else non-Apple is uglier doesn’t mean it can’t be the ugliest Apple remote.

i am guessing they went with easy usage over a nice design this time around
The upcoming pro version will be attractive

Samsung does this. I got the nicer remote with the frame Tv to replace the older one. Same remote just one isn’t ugly.

Why lucky? If he didn't win it he payed for it

it is funny, this. One lucky person gets the new iPad. Then a new lucky person gets their new iMac. Now another lucky person has got their new AppleTV 4K. I am humbly asking Tim Cook & Co. to be the lucky person that gets the new MacBook Pro 16" with what ever new M series chip they have in it.

A huge amount of news on this site is based on the fact that it's "early," i.e. a leak, prediction, or rumor. No, it's not a life-changing windfall, but that doesn't mean the early recipients aren't fortunate in the context why most of us hang around here.

I'm still bummed about it not getting a better performance boost. In some ways it's a step backward. It does have a marginally better CPU, but the A10X has a 30% higher metal score than the A12. I'm sure it's a fine device, but there isn't really any compelling reason to upgrade if you have a Apple TV 4K already, since the remote can be had separately.

I guess we hurry up and wait for the bigger update.
Considering the long wait, and rumors about how it would compete with consoles, this was a disappointing upgrade for sure. Not to mention, they stripped the accelerometer from the remote and didn't include the U1 chip, yet kept the high price. I will be ordering the remote since I recently lost mine.

I would like to see Apple add some APIs to be able to jump to specific Apps or even context in apps
Right now for example you have to:

Wake up the remote
Turn on the TV
Launch YouTube TV
Click to the Library

and similar for other apps.

Maybe they could make a long press on the TV button bring up a menu of apps/now playing lists for example.
Or just say “hey Siri launch youtube”

I disagree. I think it’s clean, has hierarchy, good for no-look, and solves every issue the previous remote had except for no way to change inputs.
I bought one of these. Clunky, but functional.

The previous "menu" button in practice worked/works like a back button
No, it absolutely doesn’t, it works like an Up button (in the menu-hierarchy sense, the opposite of drilling-down (there has to be a better name for this function but I don’t know what - maybe “out”?)).

Back means go to where you were last. Up/out/whatever means go to the parent of where you are now.

If you just watched episodes 5, 6 and 7 of For All Mankind Season 2 and you press Back twice you’d go back to episode 6, then back to episode 5. If instead you pressed Up twice you’d go up a level to Season 2, then up again to For All Mankind. The latter is useful, the former is not.

Grr, I ordered 2 of these just after orders opened and mine are still in the "processing" stage, which isn't even "preparing to ship". Been waiting YEARS for this! The old remote is maybe the most frustrating piece of Apple gear I've ever used.

I ordered an Apple TV 4K an hour after they went on sale. Checked yesterday and was still processing with expected delivery date of 27th May (UK). Just checked again and getting ready to dispatch for delivery tomorrow! 😀

I’m very disappointed with this update. There’s no reason to upgrade from a previous version. Especially at those insane prices. I’m still hoping for a new version with more exciting features that will revive the App Store and the smart home space.

There is space on the top left for a TV input button. They put the TV volume button but forgot about the TV input button.

I'm one of those who are very dissappointed with the update. Very little has been done to the Apple TV since the Apple TV4 was released 5 years ago.
