Would love if Airplay had the ability to stream audio from an Apple TV back to an iOS device. Just think, you could turn any pair of headphones into a pair of wireless headphones. Would be great for late night movies without disturbing others or would just be cool to be able to use a decent pair of wired headphones for those who don't have surround sound.

Bricked Apple TV

Update bricked my atv as well

Not good, looks like someone let a ****** upgrade out a bit too early.

Now I get to go spend money to buy a cable to restore. FML

Restored my brick

After many, many, many attempts it finally restored. I used a different mac that has a more powerful USB port. This time it did NOT require the power cable. Apple TV 2. Good luck everyone.

Anyone else lose their rentals with the update? My unwatched movie rentals all disappeared. I tried the "check for rentals" option but no success.

In your case try another micro usb cable

You obviously haven't bothered reading any of my posts before you offer suggestions. If you had, you'd know I tried TWO tested micro-usb cables on TWO different machines (iMac and Macbook Pro). Tried power and no power, tried everything suggested and everything suggested by Apple support. They said the update bricked my ATV2 and that it would be taken care of at an Apple store.

Went through all the hoops again at the Apple Store before they finally just gave me a new one.

I love my Apple TV... last night I watched a play through digital theatre, a concert from digital concert hall, and a movie through amazon all airplaying from apps on my phone. I'd like native apps for those three services but it was flawless through airplay. Still waiting for way to play UV movies and thats all I need (I upgraded all my blu-rays and dvd's possible with VUDU disc to digital.)

Have you tried the Plex app?

Hopefully they improved the caching performance... I hate renting a movie from iTunes and then being informed that it will be 3h:30m before I can start watching it... even with it set to 720p on a 25M connection. Fortunately I have no such issues with Netflix, Amazon, etc.

Something must be wrong with your Apple TV or your network. It takes about 20 seconds for me to watch a rented movie on iTunes. Are you using wireless or ethernet?

----------

I thought/hoped for sure we'd at least see an Apple TV Amazon Prime app since they (Amazon) recently added true AirPlay ability to the iOS app. Usually the timing of the addition of those kinds of features are no coincidence... Oh well.

Seriously? You will never see Amazon on Apple TV. They are a direct competitor with Music, Movies, TV. ;) You also won't see VUDU...same thing only it's Walmart behind the scenes.

Restored my AppleTV.

Asked me to tap it with my phone and it auto-setup my WiFi and stuff, asked me to type in my Apple ID password and bam. Done. No fiddling around with the stupid remote.

My update was slow but steady. I am sure glad it rolled over without a glitch, as i do not have the cable that has been suggested here.

Did update to my ATV3 and a new problem.

I usually rent the 3$ SD format movies from iTunes on my iPhone, then watch them, via Airplay mirroring, on my ATV (which is attached to a HD HP monitor via a HDMI to VGA converter bought at the apple store).

After this update, instead of having the new ability to stream the film directly out of iTunes to the ATV, I had to, as usual, rent and download Airplane to my iPhone (no great hardship.)

When I tried to, use my tried and true method to Airplay my rental from phone to ATV, however, I received a surprise message on the iPhone informing me "an unapproved monitor was attached" and then the film stopped. Trying other methods would start the film but after 5 seconds, no message appeared, but the screen went black and only the sound continued.

Anybody else have similar setup with or without post update problems or a work around?

Ya, this happened to me. I used a Kindle cable (just micro-usb) to connect to my Mac and iTunes. It did the restore just fine, but didn't upgrade to the new AppleTV version. So after the restore I tried the upgrade again, cuz I'm crazy like that. But it worked fine the second time and all is well.

Did mine this morning with a Nexus 7 power cable. :)

A weird thing happened with this update today. I tried to update two apple tv 2's with same wifi.

One updated properly OTA, but the other bricked when I tried to do that and I had to restore via itunes and micro usb.

They both were up-to date yesterday with version 5.3.

Why would one update properly and the other fail?

I really hate what Apple did to the subtitles. At first, the only option was to see the subtitles with the black 50% opacity background.

A couple of updates after, they removed the black background and it was perfect. They where shown in a perfect size, every time.

Now, they allow you to choose how you want the subtitles to appear. It is a nice option but there is a major flaw...

The size of the subtitles change depending on the size of the source... I mean, if I stream a 1280x720p movie that fills the entire screen of the TV they look good at the Medium size. But if the source is, let say, 1280x528p (with black bars up and down), they look tiny and must be changed manually to the Large size.

Also, it seems like the perfect size (something like it was before this update) might be a size between Medium and Large. Medium is not big enough and Large is to big.

I hope it is a bug and they fix it soon.

I've noticed this aswell. Don't understand how they can have missed this bug. Btw, this behaviour also exists with "Plex Media Server".

You don't need a more powerful USB port. Just connect the micro-USB and the power plug, it should get recognized immediately.

I don't know but the update bricked my AppleTV. Now I have to restore it using iTunes...

The update bricked my Apple TV (3rd Gen) last night also. Cue the frantic Google search for the meaning of the rapidly-flashing light, as my Apple TV had been a simple plug'n'play device since the day I purchased it.

Useful note to those trying to restore: when plugging into your comp, you must connect by USB *first* before connecting the power cable to the ATV.

Side note to those arguing about Canadian content: it DOES have Vevo in Canada.

Mine froze while updating but then seemed to fix itself. 3rd gen.

I kicked off the update around 11pm yesterday and left it. After maybe 20-25 minutes I checked back - expecting it to be done. It was still showing some progress bar about halfway through. That didn't look good, so I hung around and watched it for 10 more minutes. The bar didn't budge. Yuck.

So I logged on here, read everyone's reports and then resigned myself to finding a USB cable.

Half an hour later I came back with my cable and it was all done! I didn't have to do anything.
