How is this a glitch? Charter refuses to have HBOGo on the Apple TV.

You could, in theory, run HBOGo from your iPhone/iPod/IPad or Mac and AirPlay it to the Apple TV. Not as convenient, but a nice middle finger to Charter. Oh, and I haven't looked lately, but you could see who is CEO over there and give him a piece of your mind. I think the internal email system was first initial last name @chartercommunications.com

I did that once when my grandfather's cable was really messed up, and several hours of phone support and 2 tech visits didn't fix it. He got a nice call back from a VP, and everything was fixed.

Hopefully they improved the caching performance... I hate renting a movie from iTunes and then being informed that it will be 3h:30m before I can start watching it... even with it set to 720p on a 25M connection. Fortunately I have no such issues with Netflix, Amazon, etc.

I have a 8mbps connection and never wait more than a minute for 1080p Apple TV rental to begin.

----------

When I had a 12Mbps uverse connection it was always within 30 seconds or so. Now I have a 30Mbps cable connection and it takes less than 15 seconds. Where are you located? You're sure you don't have any channel interference? Because that just doesn't make much sense. And Amazon isn't on AppleTV.

Amazon Instant Video just added Airplay to Apple TV this past week.

----------

You can still AirPlay music and movies stored locally on your iOS device to your AppleTV.

iTunes Match allows your entire library to be streamed on Apple TV, bought in iTunes or not.

----------

I have this thing called a local network. It is my own PRIVATE cloud that contains a NAS full of video files that cannot be played within Apple TV because it isn't cataloged inside iTunes. My private cloud will forever be better than any other cloud service. More bandwidth, faster access, and practically unlimited space.

There are very simple solutions. Catalogue it in iTunes and use Home Sharing or use one of the multitude of apps for NAS with Airplay. Works perfectly for me. Buy a gen 2 Apple TV if you want the app icon on your tv iu.

Blinking

Help!
Just clicked update on my appletv3 by habit, however it keeps asking to connect to itunes via some usb cable. Not your normal update! Is there any way to bypass this, as I bought this just to airplay from my devices. Not interested in the radio feature, etc. Tried unplugging to restart, but still comes up to the connect to itunes graphic, then after awhile it goes black screen. The light is rapidly blinking during all this. Any advice, anyone??

Thanx in advance,

For older 2nd gen ATVs you get DFU restore mode by plugging the USB micro and attaching it directly to mac with itunes. 3rd gen ATV and above requires connecting power to ATV aswell after plugging USB connection to mac.

Is anyone getting videos on their Photo Stream on Apple TV yet? Mine are still not showing up.

apple recommends that you have your amazon kindle cable handy when updating in case something goes wrong. ironic.

what - they couldn't fit a standard usb end port in a device that is about an INCH thick ?!

It's not so much a matter of laws as ownership of the material itself. An American network, let's use ESPN as an example, isn't going to want to operate in every single country in the world even if they could. And content they own could be quite valuable in one country, and almost worthless in another one. They sell the rights to their content to the highest bidder.

No Canadian law is preventing these apps from appearing on Apple TV. It's that the rights are not held by HBO, Sky, Disney, etc.

Well in any event it's still annoying. Canada gets most (if not all) American content anyway. Why not make it available on our Apple TV and iTunes? Sucks that one has to jailbreak to get content from other countries.

Can anyone tell me how 'Airplay Over The Cloud' actually works?

I've turned it on via my ATV but don't see anywhere to play purchased videos that aren't on my iPhone.

Apple TV penetration isn't nearly high enough for Canadian content owners and Apple to negotiate to put them on Apple TV - in contrast with the iPad, where the major providers all have apps.

DFU mode restore would have fixed the problem.

The unit wasn't responding and wasn't recognized as a device in itunes. If it was fixable, why did Apple test and then give me a brand new ATV3?

All it did was continue blinking. I think you're missing the whole story here. Apple support went through everything and concluded my ATV2 could not be saved. Do you know something they don't?

Thanx in advance,

Yeah, happened to me, too, though I've had my ATV3 for some time and use it for diverse functions. Had to restart my computer, then connect microUSB (look carefully, port is hidden under the HDMI connector) to ATV and other end of the USB cable to my computer, with iTunes open on computer. Prompts appeared on my screen, and when followed, ended up with the ATV rebooted, with the iOS6 software I'd been installing when the problem occurred. Little bit of hassle, but first time i've had probs with ATV update, so that's not a horrible batting average. Stick with it, call apple tech support if you need more help.

Apple TV 6.0...and...BRICKED

Yup. Updated and now the ATV is useless. Shows up with a graphic asking me to connect to iTunes. Connected to iTunes and..nothing. Three Micro USB cables and two computers later...nothing.

Beware.

You need to plug the power cord also to the Apple TV while restoring in the computer , it needs external power for a restore

Thanks! So, I'm understanding you this way: a guest on your network uses their iPhone/ipad/iPod touch to access something they've purchased from icloud, and then tells their device to play it on your AppleTV, at which point the AppleTV pulls it down from the internet directly, instead of it streaming it from the device through the access point. Sounds good! But what's the advantage exactly, over the way it works now?

They don't need to have it on their device.

Failed Update

Add me to the list of people who have an ATV3 with a failed update.

I kicked off the update right before heading outside to do a bunch of yard work. I came back inside about two hours later with my ATV3 rapidly flashing its LED.

After reading the last several posts I see I'm not the only one having an issue. Not real happy with Apple right now. I ordered a 5s last night and then to be greeted with a failed firmware update less than 24 hours later.
