Yes! And without the need for a cable TV subscription.

One of the problems though is that in many markets the cable companies are the one supplying the internet connection so if you want a fast connection you still have to deal with them and they can just jack up the price of a standalone connection.

....and then reality hits. :(

Apple has got to be working on opening up the AppleTV to user-installable apps.

I don't understand why Apple doesn't open up the box for third party developers like they do for IOS, which by all accounts is been a phenomenal success.

Seriously can't imagine myself using the weather app on apple TV. I have two options, pull out my phone and use the app on there (something I do everyday) or turn on my TV, pull out the Apple TV remote, turn that on, switch over to that source on my TV, then go to the weather app and get the same information. It just takes too long to do on the TV if all I want is some weather information. This is the only drawback with using the Apple TV.

That is true, and I've been waiting for Charter to drop that hammer since I only get Internet service from them and no TV.

They keep calling and asking me to sign up for TV service and when I tell them I don't want it, they always ask what I do use for TV. I never tell them I use Netflix/iTunes and the Apple TV. I figure if I say that, they'll collect that data from me and others and then use it against us in the form of higher Internet service costs. Instead, I just tell them I don't watch TV.

Or lower the prices of their bundles to be more cost-competitive. While some cord-cutters are going that way for convenience and control, there are many who just don't want to pay cable/satellite rates (plus all of the other fees that aren't in the quoted rates, such as equipment fees) -- if they want to keep customers, they need to stay competitive.

Every time there is an update, everyone gets mad that they can't get channels for free or directly...right now most traditional channels have no reason to switch to this way. Some estimate of ESPN would be 30 a month for people or higher - and yes a lot of cord cutters don't care if they aren't sports fans, but for those of us who like sports that is a bit ridiculous.
Oh? Did ESPN put some sports on one of their networks?

But if you want to check the weather while you're already using your ATV, then it's right there.

"Watch"

Does anyone else find it off-putting or a poor design choice that the ESPN app and both Disney apps have the word "Watch" ON the icon?

What the hell else are you going to do with an app on the Apple TV, bake with it?

WOW, those icons are ugly!!!!

How did those get approved?

Wish you could authorize with Comcast once for my iTunes account and it would work with every app on every device. Well...at least until this whole insanity of having to pay the cable company to use apps stops. Tick tick tick

What are you talking about? Google did not remove a feature that Chromecast was shipped with. That feature was added via a third-party app. They've also gone on record saying they have no problems with local content apps, but with the SDK constantly changing, which is in "developer preview," things might break as was the case here.

Apologies. I knew that it was a third party app and said as much in my post. I read the original story a couple of days ago, but I didn't see that it had been updated.

Yep. Same here. We cut the cord a year ago and currently pay around $70 a month for mid-level Internet service from our cable provider. I keep getting calls/offers to "upgrade" to basic cable. When I do answer the phone, the cable sales person can't understand why I wouldn't want cable TV for a few dollars more. I refuse to do it on principal.

We have an Apple TV in our living room and my old Xbox 360 in the bedroom serving as a DVD player that is being used less and less. I'm dropping Xbox Live this week and waiting to see if a new ATV comes this fall. If not I'll pick up another ATV2.

Cutting cable has given us more control over what our kids see, we see way less trash (I had to Google 'twerking' this morning) and less ads. We are "watching" more TV in less time. Currently working our way though Lost.

The only remaining services the Apple TV needs are Amazon Prime Instant Video and maybe an app store.

Agreed, but really doubtful they'll provide a gateway to such a huge iTunes rival. Amazon rentals are the last reason I still have my old 1st gen Roku standing by at this point.

Maybe it's just me, but I feel like Apple TV has gotten way to cluttered.

Starting to look like the App Store now.

One time, last summer, they offered me basic cable for free - no additional cost over my Internet bill and I still refused it.

I don't want to pay for it, and though it was offered free, I don't want all the trash and all the commercials.

Wow, if they do that again, please forward them to me.

I can't believe TV over the internet hasn't become mainstream to the point where ALL channels are streamed over the internet. That would start a spiral of allowing content providers to provide content at lower/no cost, thereby pulling in more viewers and raising ad revenue. The technology is there, so let's make it happen, cap'n! (Although I am sure the reason it ain't happening just yet is cuz of the dang lawyers...)

If you're getting internet, chances are you are also getting basic cable channels if you plug your tv into the wall (unless they install a filter to block the channels, which would cost them time and money to do).
