It was on a commercial cable station originally, so they were probably not allowed to use the F-word, but look at what "Mad Men" was able to do dramatically (and comically) without resorting to unrestrained vulgarities.

Yes, because the F-bomb is SOOO much worse than incessant smoking, severe alcoholic drinking, and sex of all kinds. Please. Also, Mad Men - as a period show - attempted, quite successfully, to recreate what you would have seen in an agency at that time. Which, right or wrong, including the aforementioned but not saying the F word in the office all the time.

Disney plus have marvel and Star Wars, Apple TV got that morning show and Some future blind dudes running around

I subscribe to Disney+ and love it. I bought an iPhone XR in December and have yet to activate my "free" year of ATV+. I'll probably get around to it eventually, but even for free, the content doesn't seem to be even worth the effort of signing up for me.

I thought that show was going to be a train wreck. It was surprising how wholesome and nice it ended up being!
Yea I wouldn't have even watched it if my daughter didn't pick it. Then we binged the entire season non stop. I had the same attitude as Shub before I started watching and probably the same as him when it was over.

I can take mild profanity as long as it just seems natural and not every sentence and sometimes multiples in the same sentence. That other stuff it definitely worse to me except some mild sex as long as it isn't also violent.

Post more comedy. So 2 years from now, fewer than 28M subscribers for Disney+?

Even if Disney were just cartoons and superheroes, there is plenty of market for that. Have you ever heard of kids?

Also if you haven’t noticed, superheroes are kind of popular....even with adults. I mean, Avengers did OK at the box office.

Parents already own Blu-ray and DVDs of the entire catalogue in the streaming service. True, Avengers did "ok" in the theaters but how many times will you watch End Game on their streaming service? 3 times max and that's a push. They dont have a lot of new content to keep folks interested unless you enjoy waiting a year or two for the next Avengers movie! Good luck!

Parent of 2 & 4 year old boys. I don't own one single DVD, wouldn't even have a device to play them on if I did. We signed up for the 3 year Disney+ deal and it gets used every single day. Best $3.99 per month I've ever spent!

There is just not enough content on Disney+ for me. And by content, I mean original content. I have a vast DVD collection and don't need Disney's backlog. Also, I never watch any of my vast DVD collection because I would rather spend my time on new content (I regret spending all that money on all those DVDs). Once I was done with the Imagineering Story, Goldblum Tells All (sic), and Mando I was done with the Disney originals. I am not wasting my time on Forky, the sappy Marvel Heroes (OMG, I hate this show so much), Diary of Female President, and "High School the High School the Musical The High School Musical The Musical The Series The Musical The Singalong The Series The High School™."

Apple TV+ on the other hand has been hitting home run after home run. Every thing I have watched on Apple TV+ (and I have watched everything besides Hala and Helpsters) has been gold. If Apple continues pumping out amazing content, and you multiply that over multiple seasons over the next few years, Apple TV+ will have a formidable catalog indeed.

Well as you probably have realized for yourself -- you're not the target audience for Disney. Apple TV+ has been a home run anecdotally for a select few vocalists (seems mostly on Apple centric forums), but largely is a miss on multiple fronts thus far. They can (or will) probably pivot, so we'll see.

I have a free year of AppleTV+. And I still haven't even bothered to set it up or log in.

But we subscribed to Disney+ on Day 1, and it's getting a lot of use.

Not sure if you can subscribe anymore for your free year. The fine print read that you needed to activate Apple TV+ no later than 3 months of activating an Apple device. Who knows, at this rate, you can probably still do so. Just a friendly FYI.

It is hard to compare Disney+ to Netflix, which cost nearly 3X as much for the 4K/HDR plan.

My wife and I happily pay for Disney+ and it works on all our devices. We got multiple “free” trials of Apple TV+ and we haven’t used it even once, and we STILL feel like we want some kind of refund, just for the principle of it not being supported on LG WebOS *and* they haven’t updated the Apple TV hardware in ages.

As of a few days ago it is supported...if you have a 2019.

same, got a 11 this year, still haven't gotten around to activate my apple tv since there isn't anything on it that entices me. 1st world problem.

Not sure why these things have to always to turn into a competition among consumers. It's possible to use more than one streaming service at a time, or even alternate. They're not that expensive when it comes down to it. I think Apple TV+ works out at about sixteen pence per day. Anyone who can't afford that, certainly can't afford a device to watch it on. Same applies to Disney etc. It all adds up of course, but nevertheless these 'Streaming Wars" are ridiculous.

Maybe parents of pre-teens and teens who bought their DVDs/Blu-Rays 5 years go (or longer.) Do you think there is not a new set of parents with the target audience that would love to pay less than $150 a year and get access to 100s of classic kids movies? They may be begging for the day of VHS when tapes would eventually wear out.

Too many people can't think beyond their own situation. I get that the internet skews to a younger audience, but there are millions of parents of young children that would love to be able to show their kids the classics.

What surprising here? A company that has a catalogue of all the classic tv shows and films for 100 years, that has a global audience, which is almost the only company that caters to children specifically that owns a lot of the most popular IPs and owns like 25% of the world's media.

That being said, at $6 and $10 subscription and cancel anytime, it doesn't have to be either or situation.

Yeah, good luck watching those on your phone or tablet, which is how many people, especially kids, consume content.

Maybe they have the discs, maybe they don’t...Disney obviously knows better and has bet big on this. They certainly don’t have discs for Mandalorian and something like 30 seasons of the Simpsons and all of it in one easy interface ready to watch on any device. Preliminary numbers of nearly 30M in 10wks confirms it‘s a blowout success.

Disney has limitless content...Avengers was one example. Make a list of all the content Disney owns and let me know when you run out of ink.

If content is your concern, that’s the wrong concern, IMO.

Netflix should be the one worried about content.

You are incorrect. I am the target audience for Disney+ I love Star Wars, Marvel, and Disney World. They are just putting out way too much child focused originals. It’s mind boggling. It’s like if Apple made 9 shows like Helpsters and ghostwriter and forgot to put out their universally acclaimed shows like Little America and Servant. Oh, you should get out more - of the people who are actually heard about Apple TV+ and given the shows a chance (outside of tech forums like this one where tons of people like to be risqué and take the contrary opinion, or love Apple bashing, etc. t_d) people love the shows.

If you have a 4K TV, Disney+ has a lot to offer. A lot of their content is in 4K. They are the only place you can see the Star Wars films in 4K (not available from anyone else in any format). Also, all of their Marvel films are in 4K. The Apple store doesn't even have any of the Marvel films in 4K. It's a no brainer for me.

So, I'm guessing, that since you have a "vast DVD" collection, you're not really watching much 4K content.
I don’t need to rewatch things I’ve seen already in 4K. I will only watch new unwatched content in 4K.

Rather than create a streaming service from scratch, why can’t Apple just be a studio and license its shows to Netflix and others?

That doesn’t tie you into their ecosystem and that is part of Apple’s long term plan. Get enough subscribers and ATV+ will be a major way premium channels sell subscriptions plus licensing brings in less revenue and subscriptions while bolstering other services. It’s the same idea as the AppStore.

Eh I got a year for free, unless you have kids or like spamming the same Marvel/kids movies all day it's a pretty bland service so far. If it wasn't free I wouldn't have it.

I love me some Apple and my AppleTV box, but I am suuuuuper unimpressed with Apple's TV offerings. I subscribe to a lot of streaming services, but barring some actual content, won't be renewing my freebie AppleTV+ subscription.

Maybe spend less time bowdlerizing and more time making things people want to watch?

Even with its problems such as cropped episodes of "The Simpsons" which will be fixed June 2020, users still keep subscribing..

(What's the matter with you guys :p)

It seems like nobody today is producing light, fun shows.

Everything is intense over-the-top drama with characters that take themselves and their situations way too seriously. It's like for the past 10 years or so, every writer in hollywood has the emotional development and sense of drama of an angsty 8th grader.
Watch Little America.
