Aside from the fact that Disney+ has such a backlog of titles and top tier franchises... I just appreciate how everything is family friendly. I'm so sick of all the TV-MA content that is getting produced. So many good show concepts out there from other platforms that go too deep into the smut because they think they need all that garbage to make it an appealing show/movie.

Yeah I’m with you here. In fact I’m ready to drop Netflix due to the amount of garbage they have. It’s just not necessary if you have a good story line.

I'm about to cancel mine - way too many movies shown that when you try to watch say "coming in X months..." etc.

Good shows on AT+. Is it worth "paying" (vs free) for it now? No. But I think Apple knows this and the catalogue will look very different a year from now.

Just got ATV+ with my new MBP; nothing there but a few TV shows, no movies included at all (you'll have to pay extra for seeing one, why would anyone take a subscription on it at all? For future improvements?

I don’t have time to watch Disney+. Too busy watching The Morning Show over and over and over.
Because... it's the only show running?

However you want to spin it, Disney is the king of content and got almost 30M subscribers in 10 weeks.

They are both streaming services competing for eyeballs, so they will be compared...like it or not.

Netflix should be shaking in their boots because they are burning cash, don’t make much money, don’t have nearly the content of Disney, and even more competitors are coming.

I like Netflix...good company, but they are no Disney.

Not spinning anything. I'm just pointing out that it's not an apples-to-apples comparison.

If you want to compare total subscribers for both companies, why not include the 6.6 million ESPN+ and 30.4 million Hulu subscribers? That would give Disney 63.5 million subscribers to Netflix's 61.04 million

People find the Apple TV app confusing because it links to a lot of pay per view content (from iTunes etc.) and therefore are confused to what is included in Apple TV+ and what isn't. They then give up going on the app resulting in a lower active user base.

Amazon Prime has exactly the same problem.

They say never attribute to malice that which can be sufficiently explained by incompetence, but...

I'd give Amazon a bit more slack since Prime Video can be really good value for money if you make use of the free delivery, and Amazon's own FireTV hardware is cheap (and probably a loss-leader).

I have a free year of AppleTV+. And I still haven't even bothered to set it up or log in.

But we subscribed to Disney+ on Day 1, and it's getting a lot of use.

I like the morning show.. but to me it's "too little too late" for Apple+. But you never know, if they change the rules only to allow other channels to be shown via the (Apple) TV app it could become a whole other ballgame. Already starts with starzplay and the Smithsonian, next Disney+, Netflix, HBO and so on? With an apple tax of 30% this can become a good businesmodel..

I really don't like the trend of companies trying to be in every industry to grow.. why are Apple and Amazon making tv shows? Makes no sense..

Reminds me of all the Megacorp companies in dystopian/cyberpunk RPGs

I subscribed to Disney+ and I think what helps them is they already have a large catalog of movies and shows even though there is little original content at this time. I have not seen any original content on Apple TV+ to want me to subscribe. Apple should have attempted to build up catalog AND launched most of their original content when it went live. If I were not interested in any original content, at least have something else for me to watch.

I don't have access to Disney+ yet but I don't find any of the services that interesting (to pay).

One hasn't got much content yet and the other is full of stuff I have already seen and their new stuff coming out is mainly more super heroes.

I will probably wait it out.

Disney+ has great catalog to be sure.

But to sustain its growth, it needs more originals (not docuseries) and quick.

Beyond Clone Wars due in 2-3 weeks, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier due in August is the next big original. And from then on, we start to get better cadence of new originals. But 5 months of no major originals is a pretty big gap.
It will get better after this year - there wont be such a gap in between releases. It is the one mistake (per say) that Disney made.

My wife and I happily pay for Disney+ and it works on all our devices. We got multiple “free” trials of Apple TV+ and we haven’t used it even once, and we STILL feel like we want some kind of refund, just for the principle of it not being supported on LG WebOS *and* they haven’t updated the Apple TV hardware in ages.
Webos is supporting apple tv app in all 2019 and 2020 oked tvs and some nonoled...

You can be sure that Netflix and Disney absolutely consider Apple a competitor. They know better than to ignore a player in their space with the resources and track record of success of Apple.

I’m not sure what weird liquids you’ve been drinking, but Apple is the one that still needs to prove themselves in this space. It’s mostly the media outlets that have been spinning AppleTV vs Netflix vs Disney. If you listened to Kevin Mayer / Bob Iger speeches, you would know that Disney doesn’t look at itself as a direct competitor to any of these. It makes sense given their global strategy.

Watch Imagineering and hopefully draw some more relevant conclusions.

Apple + has way better shows to watch then Disney +. Most people just don't give it a change. Sure the Mando was amazing, but so was See. And and least apple was prepared to have new content every month, unlike Disney. Disney has nothing to watch other than old stuff. Which who has time to watch old stuff when there's so much new stuff coming out everyday.

Three months. That’s how long AppleTV+ has been around. Sure Apple’s new to the game. Disney’s been developing content for 80+ years, and Netflix is an OG streamer, 12+ years.

But competition is exactly the right word. Whether you like it or not isn’t really relevant. Just like Apple was a competitor to Nokia and Blackberry upon the iPhone’s release.

You can be sure that Netflix and Disney absolutely consider Apple a competitor. They know better than to ignore a player in their space with the resources and track record of success of Apple.

Five years from now, when Apple’s got 300-500 movies, shows, documentaries and series—some with three or four seasons behind them—Apple’s catalog won’t be nearly as sparse. Ten years from now, Apple will have thousands of hours of content, and a number of breakout hits.

As mentioned by others, Apple is playing the long game. If they want to supplement their catalog with existing content that’s always an option. They’ve got hundreds of billions of dollars in cash and the ability to issue maybe another half trillion in stock with which to do it.

Then again the others are making content just as fast. Disney and Netflix both will make much more content. So in 5 years the divide will be even larger.

As some others alluded to, Disney is not a competitor to Apple. It’s more accurate to say partner. Apple was pushing Disney+ when it launch and continues to. Apple makes more money off of Disney+ then its own service at this point. Apple is a Store first. Disney, Netflix and others not so much besides amazon who is apple’s real competition here.

This isn’t rocket science. If Apple wanted massive adoption then it needed to acquire warner when they had the chance. They passed. Rumors of mgm float these days. But it’s slimmer pickings as we go.

It shouldn’t be a shock to see Apple can’t even get the majority of its customers to do a free year trial. That’s because the majority are iPhone users. That’s hardly anyone’s tv or primary device they watch tv on.

The most interesting numbers would be if streaming (channels) sales for Apple have increased since atv+. More use of its tv app. Sales of Apple TV. These are the numbers that matter.

If apple sticks with original programming they should really just make it permanently free for Apple users. Free trial turns many off. The service should be activated automatically on new devices.

I thought the Madalorian was entertaining but cancelled my subscription as soon as the show was over. I watched two episodes of 'The Morning Show' and am kind of 'meh' about it. Maybe I will try See to determine if there is any quality.

Some like it, some don’t. Not sure if that means there is any quality or not, but yeah I think you’ll have to try it out to know whether you’ll like it or not.

Hulu and ESPN existed prior to the 10 weeks, but yeah, Disney is extremely powerful already in this business.

I would fully expect Disney+ to have more subscribers. $7.99/mo for 100 years of content from the vast Disney empire compared to $4.99/mo for some original content (much of which had a social justic-y vibe to it that won't appeal to everyone).

Add that to the idiotic decision to have 3 products/services almost named the same thing (Apple TV - hardware, Apple TV+ the service for Apple's original content, and the 'Apple' TV app that collates all content from all sources whether or not you subscribe to it) and it is no wonder that people have no clue what value they are getting with their Apple TV+ subscription.

28 million subscribers at $7.99 per month equals $224,000,000 revenue per month. Granted there are cost reductions in that number (App Store taking 30% cut, Disney offering discounts, etc.). But still, most of their catalog is older stuff that are already in their library (so Disney isn't paying for a lot of their content like Netflix). So they essentially have a budget of 240 million per month for new content or 2.7 billion dollars per year.

Granted some of that revenue goes to server costs, all those software engineers' salaries, marketing, aforementioned discounts, but still...even spending 200 million on Mandalorian: Season 1 and those new Marvel shows, Disney+ seems like an absolute cash cow.
