It's too bad we can't just buy the ATV+ shows that are interesting. Forego the subscription and buy them outright. I took advantage of the free year to enjoy For All Mankind, which so far is all i'm interested in on ATV+. Given the extreme wait for season 2 (if there is one) I'd rather have just bought the show.

I worry about if this service flops, will the shows go with it? Or will they be available to purchase? Anyone remember a show called 'Cold Case?' (not Cold Case Files but the show starring Kathryn Morris) that show is unobtainable on DVD/Blu-Ray since it had tons of licensed music as part of its plots. A shame a show I grew fond of I only started to get into in its last two seasons. Now it's gone forever. Will a similar fate happen to ATV+ shows if the service is canned?

Possibly, but it’s also likely that the good ones could be picked up by another network/service. It happens sometimes with network TV... most recently with Last Man Standing moving from ABC to FOX and Designated Survivor moving from ABC to Netflix.

So, given the information in the two posts above this one, I guess that's not the point of a free year after all, is it? :). I'm not dumping on you, just shaking my head at the money-making machine known as Apple.
You do realize the difference between tv+ and the TV.app?

The former is Apple's streaming service, whose content is free for you for one year after an eligible hardware purchase.
The latter is an app, which aggregates the content from tv+ and several other services into one place, so you don't have to dig through umpteen different apps while searching for something to watch.

Yes, I am quite aware. And I stand by my remarks. There isn't that much Apple content yet.

TMS and For All Mankind were really excellent! Feel like a high-quality production and the story is well written. The first 2-3 TMS episodes are a bit weird, but it gets much better after that. A bit too much of iPhone product placement but well...
Very curious about the "Tehran" show and seasons 2 of TMS and For All Mankind...

I've just started watching TMS and trying to not binge the entire season like I did For All Mankind. That was a mistake, trying to binge the extremely short seasons. Hard not to when they literally suck you into their story.

If you think the Apple device placement was bad, try all the Dell placement on Stargate: Atlantis!! It's like that entire show was sponsored by Dell!

I loved Cold Case! That was my show back in the day. I’m curious about your questions as well. I think the successful shows, that are worth picking up due to popularity, would probably have chance of coming back on a different network. But that is just my opinion as an honest consumer who had never set foot in LA to know the “going ons” of the film scene.

My concern is whether or not there will be some screwed up Apple licensing issue involved in releasing the shows to another network. Would seem more sensible to just release them as iTunes purchases.

It’s in my newspaper today that Scorsese has done a deal with Apple to make his next film for them.

I didn’t realize this included ATV+ also when I first read it a few days ago.

This is a heck of a deal. I’ve been looking for an excuse to get All Access. This will probably do it.
ATV+ is not included in the $9.99 price. You already have to be an ATV+ subscriber to be eligible for the bundle price. It's still a good deal though if you are interested in CBS AA and Showtime.

Ah, gotcha. Yes still a tempting deal and much better than what I would have expected in a bundle price.

I’ve got a year free but so far in the past 2 months I’ve watched one thing on it. It feels like a crap version of Amazon Prime Video where there is lots of content you have to pay extra for on top of the subscription price. With this in mind I find we watch Netflix and Disney+ as what you see is what you get within the subscription cost. Unless Apple offer more going forward I think it’ll be a short life for this service. It’s not like the paid films and series can’t be downloaded elsewhere, so making it part of the subscription would eradicate the need for that.

This is a misunderstanding based on the somewhat confusing UI of the TV app. The paid content has nothing to do with ATV+. Think of ATV+ as one channel (among others) that can be viewed in the TV app. You can see only the content included in the subscription by selecting the ATV+ "bubble" in the channel row.

I recently started my free year and haven't had time to watch much yet, but what I have watched was pretty great. I'm currently binging "Defending Jacob", which can compete with prestige HBO shows and the best Netflix dramas in terms of quality IMO.

I think part of the problem to is the Apple TV content doesn't seem to be advertised much in my country, whereas Amazon and Netflix original shows are within ad breaks. It may be that I just haven't seen them of course? I don't think to load Apple TV much, but Netflix is something I use daily. I did browse through the app when we first had it and everything I liked the look of had a 'buy' feature and it sort of put me off.

The TV app and Apple TV+ are entirely different systems.

Fact is though, that there's not a lot of ATV+ content yet. About five shows from my end, TMS, FAM, See, Dickenson, and Snoopy.

It is not much compared to the more established streaming services, but it's a bit more than 5. ;) There are currently 27 TV shows and 8 movies. So far I have watched For All Mankind and Defending Jacob, and I found both really good. Planning to watch The Morning Show and Home Before Dark next.

Don't forget See and Mythic Quest, it's just as good as the rest

Definitely more than 5 shows, and also some movies.
But you’re correct in that it’s not much compared to other services. But, in my opinion, the quality is really good mostly.

I have watched Mythic Quest, Servant, For All Mankind and that's probably it. Wife watched Defending Jacob but I didn't find it compelling.

I enjoyed Mythic Quest and For All Mankind. Still, probably would not have it if it hadn't have come included with my iPhone 11 purchase last year. Still might get it for a month or so if second seasons of either of those are released.

I have actually enjoyed more shows on Apple TV + than netflix this year.

See, For all Mankind, Morning Show, Defending Jacob, Servant, Mythic Quest, Ted Lasso, Home before dark. Every single one really hooked me. And the streaming quality is by far the best of any streaming platform so that helps too. I really cant wait to see what other shows they release.

This isn’t specific to Apple TV+ but does anyone else miss shows that were multi-season with 20+ episodes per season? I do. LA Law ran for 8 seasons. NYPD Blue 12. ER 15. The West Wing 7. Sopranos 6. Friends 10. Seinfeld 9. Now pretty much every show is just a mini-series. Big Little Lies was just two seasons with 7 episodes per season and in season 2 some of the episodes were definitely filler. Little Fires Everywhere - an 8 episode mini-series. Is there nobody that wants to invest in a franchise any more? How come actors were able to commit to long running series before but now won’t? For me as a consumer I struggle to invest in something that will probably be gone after a year or two.

There are still long-running shows, e.g. Homeland, Vikings, Walking Dead, or Big Bang Theory. Personally I enjoy good shows even if I know that they were prematurely cancelled after one or two seasons (e.g. Firefly, Almost Human, Counterpart). I don't even care if they end on a cliffhanger. I don't see it as an "investment". The journey is the reward. ;)
