This isn’t specific to Apple TV+ but does anyone else miss shows that were multi-season with 20+ episodes per season? I do. LA Law ran for 8 seasons. NYPD Blue 12. ER 15. The West Wing 7. Sopranos 6. Friends 10. Seinfeld 9. Now pretty much every show is just a mini-series. Big Little Lies was just two seasons with 7 episodes per season and in season 2 some of the episodes were definitely filler. Little Fires Everywhere - an 8 episode mini-series. Is there nobody that wants to invest in a franchise any more? How come actors were able to commit to long running series before but now won’t? For me as a consumer I struggle to invest in something that will probably be gone after a year or two.
I share your sentiments. All great shows you listed and ones I watch over and over. Getting 10 episodes and then having to wait a year for another 10 is a bunch of crap.

There are still long-running shows, e.g. Homeland, Vikings, Walking Dead, or Big Bang Theory. Personally I enjoy good shows even if I know that they were prematurely cancelled after one or two seasons (e.g. Firefly, Almost Human, Counterpart). I don't even care if they end on a cliffhanger. I don't see it as an "investment". The journey is the reward. ;)
I watch The Big Bang Theory almost every day. lol Buying the seasons from Apple has more than paid for itself as many times as I have seen every episode. Never gets old.

Yeah, the characters are just so great. I'm waiting for a good sale of the complete series set on iTunes.

I like the shows. Defending Jacob, Home before dark and Servant were all really great. My problem as others have said is that the App is ridiculous. I think it would be a lot more clear to the general consumer if they would separate AppleTV+ from AppleTV functionality. The app should only show the shows on the subscription service.

Agreed.

Mostly I stick to classic shows like Green Acres, Growing Pains, Petticoat Junction, I Love Lucy, Babylon 5, Farscape, various Star Treks, etc.

I really am used to a 21+ episode season. It helps flesh out the story. Also, if a series ends abruptly (Firefly *cough!* Sputter! Cough!) at least you got 21 episodes over 7-9. I highly doubt that Babylon 5 or Farscape would have been as well received had they only had ten episodes each season, and they'd be extremely short after 4-5 seasons, and have far less re-watchability.

Also, still mighty miffed that Stargate: Universe never got finished.

I am afraid that the age of quality t.v. as I grew up with (as a whole) is over.

There's still plenty of shows from the glory days I have yet to see. I was re-watching an ancient Nickelodeon show (that only lasted 23 episodes period) back in 2012 called Space Cases that starred Jewel Staite (Firefly, Stargate Atlantis) and one of the Youtube comments suggested trying out Farscape, as Space Cases was Farscape-lite. Hooked ever since! I'm sure plenty of good old discovery is out there

Pretty much all of my free trial is wasted waiting for them to release a paltry 10 more episodes each of TMS and For All Mankind, that will be only enough for a weekend of binge then another year wait.

It's failed completely IMO.

The few shows I would watch again will be watched within a week if they continue the same pittiful release of 10 episodes a year. So they'll get 1 month out of me when everything for that year is on there, then I'll cancel again.

They need a seriously massive amount of content added to make it viable, not the pathetically small handful of (all be it high quality) originals.

To give you some sort of comparison. There are over 1500 Netflix originals, with a minimum of 30 new ones a year, most years its signficiantly more. Combined with rolling licensing of movies that they regularly swap out.

Apple has 48 - IN TOTAL, most of which they've bought for a premium from other studios.

I might be right about For All Mankind being intended as a one-season only mini-series. Last year around this time in December they had at least 5 episodes done. So far, nothing. I'm starting to have another Firefly-complex!!

To be fair they have a 7-8 year head start.

And that’s what Netflix does, produce content whereas AppleTV is a merely a division of services. Considering the diverse number of things Apple does, from smartphones to computers, it’s not surprising that AppleTV is still in its infancy.

Frankly I don’t think AppleTV aspires to be as big as Netflix, but rather provide some original content as a way to drive hardware sales.
A better comparison might be against Amazon Prime.

Just started to watch "The Earth At Night", a nature series based filming with extremely sensitive low light cameras. Films are in color and reveal a totally different world than we are used to. First episode I watched was primarily about a pride of lions and their family dynamic. Lions spend 80% of their time at night hunting and getting food. The Lioness does all the hunting for the pride while raising 3 cubs. Very well done. Sorry folks but I can not stand Ted Lasso, don't think he is funny.

Watched a few shows but there isn't enough there or that interests me for me to pay for a subscription

Amazon prime has infinate more content and originals though so not sure thats a fair comparison either.

Assuming Apple keeps it small theres no way to justify the full price when its approximately the same as Disney plus, which even its infancy has produced more originals than Apple.

IS that true and you got confirmation or is it a rumor? I'm not holding out much hope. I've already waited too long for season 2. I'm seriously sick of 5-10 episode seasons then a one plus year wait. It's worse than sports season where certain shows are pre-empted for a few days or weeks. I used to think back when Star Trek: The Next Generation episode 'The best of Both Worlds' part one ended, that six months to find out if Picard would be rescued from the Borg was a long ass time. But a year plus is unacceptable.

These services encourage binging the show then when it's over in a day, it feels wrong to wait that long. It's not because of sports either. It's just being an idiot. I thought the whole 'to be continued' crap was dead once streaming services took off. By God they better have 21 episodes this time.

It is true. I wont link where I read it (competing website), but a quick Google search (or DuckDuckGo in my case) shows that the 2nd season will air in February and a 3rd season has been confirmed as well.

Unfortunately, my Google/Duck-fu isn't strong lately. I found all sorts of guesses, none of them confirmed, about there being a season 2, to there not being a season 2, to whether it starts in november or december, to whenever, including the possible Firefly outcome-that we are waiting in vain and nothing happens and it's another in the list of unfinished shows.

And sadly, the fans of Firefly couldn't bring it back. Since ATV+ shows are catering to an even tighter niche who subscribe and must have Apple hardware to view, it means less influence should the show evaporate, as I still firmly believe it will.

I also thought that Season 3 of The Orville was confirmed but so far nothing has come of it.

Its not trying to compete with Netflix though. It’s clear they’re aiming to go alongside things like Netflix.
