Unfortunately, my Google/Duck-fu isn't strong lately. I found all sorts of guesses, none of them confirmed, about there being a season 2, to there not being a season 2, to whether it starts in november or december, to whenever, including the possible Firefly outcome-that we are waiting in vain and nothing happens and it's another in the list of unfinished shows.

And sadly, the fans of Firefly couldn't bring it back. Since ATV+ shows are catering to an even tighter niche who subscribe and must have Apple hardware to view, it means less influence should the show evaporate, as I still firmly believe it will.

I also thought that Season 3 of The Orville was confirmed but so far nothing has come of it.

you don’t need Apple hardware to view.

I might be right about For All Mankind being intended as a one-season only mini-series. Last year around this time in December they had at least 5 episodes done. So far, nothing. I'm starting to have another Firefly-complex!!
Season 2 is coming out in a couple of months, and season 3 has been ordered as well:

If it takes this long, a year and two months for crying out loud, it better have more episodes this time around.

Didn't stop the filming of the newest Netflix/ATV+/Amazon/Hulu originals though did it?

there wasn't a plandemic during the first season of For All Mankind. It just stopped at episode 10. If I had known the season was going to be so short I'd have taken my time vs. binging it in a weekend. But until recently, all shows had 21 episode (or more) seasons. I wasn't aware the whole British thing became standard in the U.S. like we suddenly joined the EU

Maybe, just maybe we had a worldwide pandemic for nearly a year now. And if that was the case, filming of episodes was probably halted for quite some time. I'm not sure, though. Might have dreamt all of that.

most Netflix originals are only 10 episodes now aren’t they?

And most HBO originals are only 10-13 eps. The Sopranos, that premiered in '99, is only 13 eps per season!

Pretty sure all filming was halted during the lockdowns... doesn't matter what service you call home. Reality is, shows that air today were shot 6 months to a year ago... so just because you see content that is new, doesn't mean it was shot recently... it just means they had it sitting on the shelf waiting to air.

The only reason Apple is even able to air much of anything is because it WAS SITTING ON THE SHELF waiting to air. Same is true for all the other services.

Yeah, the first 30 minute ep of season 1 had me feeling a bit ripped off. But after a couple more episodes I realized they were just making them as long as they need to be to tell that chapter story.

I didn't say I watched them. I just happen to have a Netflix account (used less since most of it is their reboots and original stuff) and browse it from time to time. I see new stuff there all the time.

Pandemic didn't stop Ted Lasso, or any of the more recent ATV+ shows. I still stand by For All Mankind being another Sopranos, ending on a cliffhanger, many plots left unfinished. It happens when you have only a handfull of episodes and because of that, much content is 'edited for time' due to not enough show.

It's quite likely many of those were mostly done prior to the pandemic with just some smaller and/or mostly post-production type of things remaining, or even just waiting for a particular planned release timeframe.

I’m just pointing out that’s the way of much of TV now. Not many series are more than 12 episodes.

It is a faillure to me. It is not worth the money based on the current content that is on offer. I will switch to something else when my free trail expires.

I will check it again at the end of the year to see if things have improved.

Apple is extending our free ride until July. Fine. My wife can watch season two of "Dickinson" and "Morning News." But, come July, I'm still pulling the plug.

BTW, am I the only one who doesn't like the technical specifications of some of the Apple TV+ shows? When watching on my 4K TV, many shows look like they were shot on videotape. This isn't the difference between 1080p and 4K. This is more like frame rate.

Even Apple's "re-mastering' of the old Peanuts TV specials are annoying. It looks like they're trying to force a 3D effect onto a flat, 2D art form. It's kind of like colorization of films created and meant to be seen in black and white. I prefer my old DVDs of the Peanuts specials. They look like how I remember them - and how they were meant to be seen.

But the videotape effect is also noticeable on some - but not all - of Amazon Prime's shows. It's particularly jarring on Amazon's "The Marvelous Mrs. Maizel." It's a show about the 1950's and 60's. It would have looked better at 24 frames per second - giving it a film-like quality. On the other hand, "The Grand Tour" and many other shows look just fine.

I suspect, with both Apple and Amazon, that they have techies running things who are oblivious to a given project's artistic considerations. At least, that's the way it seems to me.

Are you sure you haven't activated frame interpolation on your TV? All of the TV+ shows that I have seen have a 24 Hz framerate (and the ATV automatically switches the output framerate with framerate matching enabled), and don't look like video to me.

Pretty sure it is 24 Hz.

The impression I get from everybody I’ve discussed this with is, they wouldn’t pay for it if it wasn’t on a years free subscription. As it stands I still don’t think the content is there yet for my tastes. Once my years free ends i’ll cancel and perhaps go back to it once it’s matured and there a wider variety of things on it .

Well, I know I haven't set anything like that. In fact, I've gone out of my way to turn off all kinds of video smoothing, etc. And not all shows look like this. But I'll check again. Maybe Samsung is forcing certain settings without giving me a choice.
