Doesn't give me much hope for locking and unlocking my front door or turning of the heating from work lol

Existing products can already do both of these. For me, its totally automatic based on GPS. I can also do lights, heat, locks, etc manually via iOS app.

I wonder what they will do with all the data they collect from my Apple account tied to all their devices...

Bring you presents, of course! "He knows when you've been sleeping, he knows when you're awake . . . ."

Definitely will require a new bridge. HomeKit accessories require an MFi certified hardware chip to do the authentication of the device into HomeKit. The bulbs are ZigBee and according to the developer docs if they are paired with a MFi bridge, that bridge can connect them into HomeKit as long as they aren't a security type device (i.e. door lock).

You only need an AppleTV to control the devices if you aren't on the local WiFi network. Any iOS device on the same network should be able to connect directly to the devices. If you want control while "out and about" the AppleTV acts as a bridge/relay for getting the commands to your local network.

All that is according to the current Apple Developer documentation and videos from last year's WWDC. Some of this may change next week, but I am guessing it will mostly stay like that.

I as well as others will want a new FREE bridge then Phillips because you told us we wouldnt need one, and so we went out and bought your product.

Exactly. I as well as others will want a new FREE bridge then Phillips because you told us we wouldnt need one, and so we went out and bought your product.

Well the bridge used is not MFi certified... I could imagine the bulbs keep working (Z-Wave anyway, and that won't change IMHO), but we'll need a new HomeKit ready MFi certified bridge...

I believe that is where family sharing comes in

Which is nice for families, but if no one is related or if the members of the family are old enough to buy their own content then it becomes a bit of a headache.

The only way around this we've been using is to buy the content on individual devices and stream it over using AirPlay.

Kind of a bummer that I have to buy a new Insteon hub to get HomeKit compatibility. Although, at this point I'm going to hold off buying a new hub because it seems like right now, the only tangible functionality that HomeKit provides is being able to control things with Siri. That's simply not worth $150 to me.

It also seems to me that the chances for there to be a problem increase exponentially when you add yet another "middle man" into the mix (Apple TV) that's needed to control your "internet of things" devices. Let's hope with all the delays that HomeKit has had, they've used that time to work a lot of the bugs out.

Insteon claims their Pro Hub, which is their HomeKit product, also supports Nest. So for Insteon users, there may be a path from ATV->HomeKit->Pro Hub->Nest.

Time will tell.

I don't think that will work. According to the documentation on the developer site WiFi and Bluetooth devices must connect natively to HomeKit, hubs can include other items using other protocols (assumed to be ZigBee, Z-wave, Lutron, etc.)

Say it all you want, their bridge has been out for a long time and if they release a new one you probably won't get a free one unless it was within a 30 day period or so, if you are lucky. Quite frankly if you bought one after November last year when there were already rumors and articles about the MFi chip you should have known better.

Apple TV allows multiple simultaneous Apple Account logins for specifically this purpose. It has for some time now. Please stop spreading misinformation.

So I wonder if the next gen Apple TV will retain the $99 price point of the last generation (before the price drop).
If that is the case, it is an immediate purchase, if not, still a purchase but after a little while.

Please check your own information. Not only are you wrong about the version I own, you're wrong about everything we're talking about.

"One important note: when you're purchasing or renting a show, you won't be given the option to change Apple IDs during the process. Instead, the Apple TV will use whichever Apple ID was last selected. You'll have to go into Settings > iTunes Store and switch accounts beforehand."

Hence the headache. You can't use them at the same time, and you have to remember to switch.

Come with a more informed perspective next time.

That specifies for purchasing, not for viewing. Something like HomeKit, once setup should be conceptually similar to the viewing of content, just having the account logged in.

Are you saying when you put in multiple accounts you can't view content from the different libraries under Movies, TV Shows, and Music?

Naw, everything you said was spot on. It's just the (minor) inconvenience of having to switch accounts or put them in the system to begin with.

I really should mention that besides the one I have at home, we use them in conference rooms at the Uni I work for. Its' there that it becomes a headache.

Why I recommended against them is another story.

We do the same. Don't even get me started with the lack of Profile support! And I don't know if you've run across the bug where if you have the Device Enrollment Program and your MDM sets them up to be managed/supervised, then you can't apply any profiles at all. The Apple Sales People and SE's are not happy on either of those either.

If you have run across either of those, or just want to harass Apple, please log into the bug tracking system (http://bugreport.apple.com) and submit tickets. They use the number of duplicates to prioritize engineering effort.

Thanks!

I should mention we don't set ours up with any Apple Accounts, there are only used for Airplay streaming. Especially since we have any number of faculty or students that may need to use them.

That may be the case and time will tell. However Insteon has only referenced a new Pro hub, and zero other Insteon devices for control of lights, locks, etc. If the pro hub works with all existing devices, then those may work through ATV as well.

Any approach that kills all existing devices is very difficult to sell. I have one hub but dozens of devices at around $50 each. Starting over is just not an option. Also given the claim that ATV will also support developer apps, that opens up a range of other possibilities for device control.

The new Apple TV is going to be absolutely incredible. I can't wait to see everything Apple announces next week about this. I'm already preparing to line up to buy at least four of them.

I am only curious at to the price of the new box. I have a feeling the new ones will be like $169.99. And I have a feeling that anything new introduced will not be backwards compatible to the old ones. Time will tell.....

With HomeKit and apps coming to the Apple TV, is it possible the name of the device will be changed to reflect that it's not just about TV anymore but games, apps and a home control center?

Having had a smarthome for only 33% of the smarthome time period (13 out of 40 years), I find the power consumption of the appliances driving the smart home to be more of a "next generation" issue.

Having lights shut off automagically at 10pm every night makes my home consume 600 wh (0.6 kwh) per day. The Apple TV uses 6 watts (per the power supply on Apple's page), so having it on consumes 0.06 kwh, a 100x improvement.

I hate to be the engineer here, but 6 watts x 24 hours = 144 watt-hours. A common confusion of units. But it sadly means that the reality is only slightly better than a 4-fold improvement.

I'm surprised nobody has mentioned the rumor from long ago (1yr+?) that the new ATV might be an Airport Express/ATV combo. Haven't read anything about that since... both products have not been updated in what feels like eons. I desperately want my AE to have WiFi 802.11ac. If this doesn't happen, might just have to bite the bullet on an Airport Extreme.

Here's an interesting article from last year on the Airport Express:

Yep I remember that rumour! Im hoping the new Apple TV is a sexy device as I have terrible will power and I LOVE new gadgets :)

it's not a stunt -- Hue was put into production before HK even existed, it doesnt have the necessary chip. which means either a new bridge, or new bulbs. pros/cons to each.

Questions: Do you think the current Apple TV will be able to run the App Store? Like via software update. Second, how much do you think the new Apple TV will cost? $99? More?
